Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

I've tried moose, not a fan. Deer is also eaten up here as well.
I haven't had moose before but I've had deer jerky...it was not really to my liking. I guess I'm more used to beef jerky. We've also tried turkey bacon...nope not for us but sister-in-law has taken to not eating pork since she started dating her current boyfriend who is Muslim.

Sure I love Voices of Liberty or whatever the singing group is called.

we use to have a great local BBQ place here but it closed. Only chain ones now.

I had a guess on what restaurant you were mentioning and I was right. No idea they had closed. They were wildly popular so that’s surprising.

Who exactly are you accusing of not being Canadian while claiming to be. When you make an accusation, its necessary to provide proof or at least back it up somehow. I'm very curious as whom you deem are fake Canadians.
I am not accusing anyone of being fake Canadians. Just repeating the observations of my Canadian cousins when I send them links from the DIS. The real controversy was over whether traditional wedding cakes in Canada are fruit cakes. This was years ago. That was referenced by someone else up this thread, but my cousin sent me links at the time to some of the major wedding cake bakeries in Ottawa whose offerings include "Traditional Canadian Wedding Fruitcake". Doesn't mean every wedding has fruit cake, but it is much Canadian as poutine.

I love the Hall of Presidents/American Pavilion/Voices of Liberty. :)
I mostly bypass the Canadian Pavillon. It’s my least favourite country in WS.

Ha! The flip side is the same. I mostly bypass the American Pavillion. It's my least favorite country in WS.

...but I do like the Hall of Presidents

My step mother is French Canadian and is from Montreal. There's some BLEEP good food in Montreal. We did one day of just poutine from different places. Not those beans on toast though. Yuck. no. :rotfl2:
Well one is French food and the other is English food. There is a contrast there. My FIL was born in London, but even they didn't have beans on toast. Back when I was married and we lived in Northern Vermont it was 60 miles from Montreal. Many a Saturday late morning we would decide to go up to Saint Catherine Street in Montreal just to get a smoked meat sandwich at Dunn's. I forget were we parked but it was in some parking garage just to the east, I believe, of Ste. Catherine. I haven't been back there in almost 20 years now. It's a long drive from Raleigh, NC.

Baseball and soccer also follow that small town feeling in the U.S.. We often call Canada our 51st state so I like to think we have more similarities than differences. :-)
Yes, well, please stop doing that. :thanks:
...Applebee's is the sort of place that old ladies go to.

If you're driving to Florida, you need to stop at the Buc-ee's gas station in Daytona Beach. I think there's also one near St Augustine. It's a Texas chain of gas stations. It's epic. Amazing. They have a certified BBQ pit master on staff. The bathrooms are amazingly clean. There's a wall of beef jerky. And just about every dumb knicknack with Buc-ee the Beaver on it that you can imagine. Their pulled pork sandwiches are legitimately really good.
 Guilty as charged. One of my quinquagenarian besties and I just met there a few weeks ago. :crutches:
What about Perkins and Red Lobster?
It probably varies from place to place but my city (Calgary, Alberta) has all the following American chain restaurants:
Ruth's Chris, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Applebee's, Perkins, Denny's, IHOP, Five Guys, Fatburger, Carl's Jr., Taco Bell, KFC, Popeye's, Arby's as well as the garden-variety McDonald's, Wendy's, A&W, Dairy Queen, Burger King, Pizza Hut and Domino's Pizza. There may be more (like the cinnamon bun and pretzel places) in the mall food courts but I never go there so I'm not sure.
Do most Canadians often say “Eh” a lot or is that a stereotype?
Opinions on this vary, apparently. Personally, I think we all say it so ubiquitously that we don't even realize how often we say it.
:goodvibes

They are political as in how could you....... which would be a waste of time and would definitely cause things to go off track. Plus, I'm changing no ones mind and no one is changing mine, so no point rehashing the same old conversations.

How could you? Many, many couldn’t. And many, many are as disgusted as I assume you are.

Who the hell calls Canada our 51st state? 🤦‍♀️
It’s an American joke in the Northeastern USA.
https://simple.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/51st_state
It’s stems from the fact that we have tried to annex Canada (sorry about that) and that some provinces have in the past considered statehood (I believe they were Toronto and Montreal in the late 1790’s/early 1800’s). But in the end we are best friends who protect Santa through NORAD. 🇺🇸 🤝 🇨🇦 :-)🎅🤶:rotfl:

Canadians, are you now supporting your national team after the watershed moment on Wednesday? I ask because some of your sports media seems to believe so. 🤔

Oh, I know you are far now, but if you are ever closer. I would Love to go meet there for a Dunn’s smoked sandwich! I LIVE IN MONTREAL, FOR REAL 😀
