Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Yes, at Walt Disney world in the 90’s. It was chaos. Don’t recommend lol
I think most from the US would be overwhelmed by the Disney version. :scared: Some of the small town versions are little cute town events with farmers' markets, craft fairs, BBQ's, raffles, bounce houses for the kids (passing out religious pamplets that you smile and hide before the kids get traumatized...) but with less than a million people crammed into main street for hours.
ETA: growing up near Detroit they had some sort of joint fireworks on the river between the countries. My momory is once a year we sat on a boat watching what to me were horrifyingly loud explosions in the sky, and then it was over... not sure which country it really counted as.

What stores are closed in NB on Canada Day? Pretty sure everything here is open with reduced holiday hours. Other than Christmas and New Year’s Day, I don’t think retail ever closes anymore. :confused3
Alberta is such an anomaly when it comes to stat holidays and stores remaining open! It always catches me off guard when Alberta friends are going shopping on the holidays. I’m not sure if other provinces are business as usual, most of the people I know are east coast, Alberta and BC people.

Here's the regulations of every province and territory, summarized by the Retail Council of Canada. It seems the heaviest restrictions are in the Atlantic provinces and the least in Manitoba where only a few hours on Remembrance Day are actually restricted by law.

Canadians, in your experience where are the best general places to ask someone out on a date in Canada? In America (in the Northeastern region where I live), there are several places where it’s looked down upon (ex. The local gym or supermarket because it’s seen as creepy).

I was in Victoria on Canadian Thanksgiving 2019 and it sure seemed like all the retailers were open, as well as Butchard Gardens.

Do Canadians get the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Celebration on tv?
If it is on one of your networks we get it. NBC, CBS , ABC or Fox. We get the Christmas parade.

When we get the same shows on our networks we get shifted over to a Canadian station and Canadian commercials . So if I watched This is Us on NBC it would switch to CTV at the end of the show would switch back to NBC with out changing the channel. NBC would be a bit behind so I would sometimes catch the previews …lol

Yeah, it’s an awesome American tradition on NBC.

So you guys get American channels (ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, CW), plus CBC and CTV? I wish we could get CTV and CBC in the USA.

Yes. That is what "basic cable" is in Canada. Now additionally, we have specialty channels and many streaming services which are higher "tiers" of cable. And in case you're interested, there are actually 4 national networks in Canada - CBC, CTV, Global and CityTV.

"Retailers can be open on holidays as long as they pay their employees according to law."

As long as they pay their staff the stat holiday pay, retailers can stay open.

Butchart Gardens is a tourist hot spot so I am not surprised they are open on Thanksgiving and likely most other stat holidays. Costco is one that I always forget is closed on many of the stat holidays and I have lost count of how many Labour Days I have driven then only to find them closed!

My daughter says one of the frustrating things about Costco here in the U.S is they are closed for so many holidays that have been shifted to Mondays. She works weekends and Monday morning is her shopping day.

Does Canada have a fireworks show on Canada Day?
Yes, most places in Canada do.

Canada Day Celebrations

Just as the Fourth of July celebrates American independence, Canada Day is a celebration of a united Canada and independence (though it was more of a major milestone on Canada’s journey toward freedom). On this day, the Canadian flag flies high across the country, while citizens typically celebrate with firework displays, concerts, barbecues, parades, and other patriotic activities.

The nation’s largest Canada Day celebrations typically occur in the country’s capital, Ottawa, right in front of the parliament building.

Canada Day

I don’t go all out on Canada Day. I do have a flag out and decoration on the front door.

When the kids were small we went to the town museum that did horse and wagon rides around our towns older houses that were near the museum. They have a band on the front porch of a old house that is part of the land there. They do have a huge Canadian cake and hand out slices. The Mayor and staff hand out small flags too. Have old fashion games to play and get ribbons for the kids and crafts. It was a tradition for us.

Than at night we have fireworks at the community centre , Some years we go up and join. They have music and food trucks but we also can stay home and still see some of the fireworks. Haven’t had this the last 2 years.

Fireworks will start in the neighbourhood as early as Thursday night I’m sure and all through the weekend . It is illegal to do fireworks other the Canada Day and Victoria Day in May but people still do it anyway.

Kids won’t be home so probably be just the 2 of us putting around the house….lol

They’re open here too. The only day I’d say most places are closed is Christmas Day. Christmas Eve has most places closing early. More and more fast food places are staying open, but most everything is shut down.

So you’re agreeing with her? Finally you believe us Canadians lol

Does Canada have a fireworks show on Canada Day?
Buzz, come on. Do you seriously think we don’t have celebrations? I’m starting to think you believe we all live in igloos.

.
LOL. My Canadian cousins usually are the ones that find some of the Canadian posts here questionable. With covid restrictions being eased, I have gotten photos from one cousin from two weddings this year of the Traditional Canadian Fruit Cake wedding cake to share with what he calls my "Mickey Mouse Canadian" friends.
