Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Everything there was pretty light-hearted and non-controversial. As has been touched on many, many times over the long course of this thread, in superficial ways (like what we eat for dessert ;)) it's difficult to differentiate our cultures. It's the deeper ethos; things not easily discussed on this forum, that make us who we are as a people and a strong, unique, proud nation. All we ask is that such things be accepted without question and that the values we hold so dear not be dismissed or diminished in misguided attempts to homogenize us with either the US or the UK.
Well said!

You keep on dreaming Buzz! I think you underestimate the amount of "don't care/disinterest" in soccer for a lot of Canadians. We know the sport of soccer exists, we just aren't invested in it and have no desire to know everything about it. Are you being paid by the post to promote world soccer on the Disboards to Canadians? If so, it must be a thankless job.

Imagine a topic that you have absolutely zero interest in knowing anything about but have a basic understanding of, like dryer lint. Now imagine if every day we talked, but all I wanted to talk about was that one thing that you don't want to hear anything about. "Have you checked your dryer lint tray? Did you hear that @prairie girl (sorry!!!) only cleans her lint catcher every two loads? The world dryer lint ball rolling competition is coming up, who are you rooting for? You tell me that you aren't interested in the topic, but I say that you just don't know everything about it, and if you did, then you would LOVE it as much as I, and many others, do. I proceed to regale you with my knowledge of impressive dryer lint information, like did you know that a guy made a picture of the Queen using a stencil and white and dark dryer lint? It's true! (The story no longer comes up on Google, but search dryer lint art and I ensure that you will be duly impressed!) I would then proceed to keep telling you about it. Every day. I know you don't want to hear anything more about it, but I'm excited, so it spills over into our conversation despite the boundary that I know you have set. If only I could find that ONE THING that would totally make you see the light and learn to embrace the wonders of dryer lint! I keep trying. I slide it into conversations where the topic is not even remotely related to dryer lint. You see what I'm trying to do, so you ignore my attempt. I try some more...

It's that game you play at the fair, where the gophers pop up and you have to bop them on the head until they pop up again. Oh no...wait...

And here we go...:D

I appreciate you trying, but it falls on deaf ears and you will have thinly veiled insults sent your way.

Plus, if (big if) we cared, there’s 1900000000000 other threads we could ask questions on.

I don’t insult anyone for not liking soccer. I respect your opinion on it. I’m not tone-deaf either.

WC 2022 might change your mind. If you follow my MLS thread, the latest post has the schedule for this weekend’s games. You could watch a match on TV and see if your take on the sport has changed.
I am in Atlanta and we have a team - I have gone once and it was pleasant experience. If others were interested in going as a social outing, I would go again. Did I have any real interest in the game itself - not really. Apparently, we are a host city for the 2026 World Cup as well, but its not something that I am anticipating with any great excitement. Again, each to their own.

FYI - Telling us (repeatedly) that the only reason we don't like soccer is because we don't understand it, is insulting.
I said many people who make fun of the sport usually don’t watch it or ever try to learn about it. Some on the board say “I saw this while I watched the game and therefore the whole sport is dumb”. If I see a comment like that, I try to explain why the so called dumb action/rule in the sport occurs, purely from an explanatory perspective. That’s not being insulting, that’s trying to expand someone’s knowledge. It’s still their choice whether to care or not. I could say it’s dumb for a kicker in the NFL to attempt a 45 yard field goal attempt but I’m sure someone that’s more into football could explain the logic behind it.

And that’s fair enough. If you go in person great. If not that’s fine too. I just offer suggestions on how people can find out more about the sport if they would like to.

I appreciate passion ... nothing wrong with that at all. I am sure the MLS appreciates your efforts :)

Buzz you remind me of my sister-in-law's boyfriend, letting things slide off of you like water off a duck's back, I envy you for that ability truly :flower3:

If you want to talk on another thread about random things come find me I'll be down :)

Canadians, have you ever experienced American Independence Day while in the USA? Americans, have you ever experienced Canada Day while in Canada? :-)🇺🇸🇨🇦

I’ve been in both Boston and Buffalo NY for the 4th of July.

Loved Boston, so much history coupled with Independence day celebrations- awesome! We had the chance to see The Boston Pops at the Hatch shell and some amazing fireworks.

Many field goal attempts in the NFL these days are over 50 yards so that would be the logic of attempting a 45 yarder.

Yes and I was surprised we could spend the day shopping as everything was open. That doesn't happen on Canada Day.

What stores are closed in NB on Canada Day? Pretty sure everything here is open with reduced holiday hours. Other than Christmas and New Year’s Day, I don’t think retail ever closes anymore. :confused3
