American Idol Season 6: The Official Thread

Didn't Randy even say at the beginning of the show on Tuesday that it doesn't matter what song you choose, you just have to sing it well? Then Ryan said something like "we'll see how long [Randy's opinion] lasts." Sure enough, however, Randy criticized Sanjaya for singing a Stevie Wonder song. Then they also criticized others for singing songs that were too "old" for them. I agree that the judges aren't really consistent with their comments.

OT....just wanted to comment on your Sig....I loved Steve Irwin as did my family and his passing was a tragedy....People and animals lost a great friend when he died....Being a wildlife major in college I loved how he approached teaching and conservation....he put himself out there for all of us so that we could have a better understanding of the world around us....He will be missed....

yeah, he did. and i loved Ryan saying "do you have any constructive criticizm for them, Randy?" and his response was "sing better".......oh ok! now i know what to do next time! :sad2:

His passing really was such a tragedy. The world lost such a wonderful person, a person who dedicated his life to conservation and education. My brother and I loved watching his Croc Hunter shows and were very sad when he died. Thursday (2/22) would have been his 45th birthday.... Rest in peace, Steve!

Or they say one week - try something new, challenge yourself, and the next week - that wasn't your style, be true to yourself.

Nothing irritates me more about this show then when they do this. UGH!!! Make up your minds!!! Do you want them to take a risk, or do what they do best? Can't have it both ways people.

Oh wait, Paula clapping irritates me more. For a cheerleader, she hasn't a clue how to clap properly. If she was on my squad, her pom poms would have be stripped from her long ago.

i love how people always get so excited when she gives someone a standing ovation. considering she gives EVERYONE one.....:hippie:

Oh, yeah...that was so helpful. Although it seems like whenever one of them does try to give some constructive critcism (usually Simon), either the audience boos or the other judges talk over that judge. :confused3

Anyway though, I still find the judges to be entertaining. They add a lot to the show. I usually find myself agreeing with Simon, but every once in a while, his opinion is the direct opposite of mine!

Another thing that gets me is when they say that this is solely a "singing" competition, but then go on to criticize a contestant's appearance and say things like, "You don't 'look' like you could be an American Idol," or, "Your outfit is boring." :confused3

I know. It loses something when you give it to everyone. And you dont know how well you actually are doing if you all got the same ovation. Its like everyone taking a class, and the teacher giving you all A's no matter how well you did in the class. Cheapens your A for sure.

me too. every once in a while i think Simon either gets jealous or annoyed with a contestant and THAT'S where his way out there comments come from.

yeah i don't get the clothing comments, either. i hate when they do that.

Yep, I totally agree with you!

Ha, I never thought about like that!

Yeah, it's not like you can see what the singer looks like or what he/she is wearing when you listen to their CD, and when they do give live performances don't their stylists usually choose what they wear anyway? Oh well, I guess the judges just resort to the contestant's appearance when they don't have anything else useful to say.

well, granted looking good DOES help the voting process (i mean, HELLO Ace!) but that's not the ONLY thing that America looks at. if the person isn't a good singer, but is really hott i'm not gonna vote for them. sorry, this is not America's Next Top Model, this is American Idol. you've gotta sing to win! that's why i knew, from the start of last season, that my "Favorite" idol wasn't going to win. sure, he was good, but there were better performers on the show.

That's true...their appearance does influence the voting to an extent. I think that maybe the judges just shouldn't really say anything about their appearances (unless it's just complimenting an interesting shirt or dress or something along those lines), but focus on the singing instead. I agree with you that even though a person maybe really hot, they have to be a good singer to get my vote.

i definatly agree. and Simon is the last person to criticize what someone is wearing!

That's true! He doesn't have the most exciting wardrobe either, but he does look good when he wears a suit (like at the finale). :)

i'm sorry, but "looks good" and Simon Cowell should never be in the same sentence, ever.

I think the point is that the best of the best can, and that's what they're looking for: People who push themselves to the next level and make that level their own.

I have to agree with Bicker on this one. I know it seems contradictory that they constantly say both "push yourself, try something new", and "dont' do a song that's too big for you", but they need singers who understand how to push themselves, try something new, make a song their own, AND do a good job of it all at the same time.

This is somewhat :offtopic: I just did a listening test. :rotfl: I really like Lakisha's voice and her rendition of And I Am Telling You was very powerful. But just for the fun off it I listened to her version and Bianca Ryan's back to back. Just audio. Good grief, Bianca's blew me away... again. While I realize that this may be comparing apples to oranges, the bottom line is that young girl had more feeling and less dramatics in her version than Lakisha did.

I was sorry to see that Bianca's first CD was a bubble gum feast. Yeah she's only 12 but her voice is so mature. She should never be forced to see teeny bopper material. For those of you who may have missed this kid on America's got talent, you can hear her sing AIATY here:

Haha, I guess my statement comes more from my opinion that men look their best when they are wearing a suit (rather than, for example, the t-shirts that Simon wears every week.)

well, men can be sexy in t-shirts, but just not Simon. at least change the color man! it looks like he's wearing the same shirt, everyday!
