American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread**

Did anyone catch Fox News in NY after the show last night? I know they did some story on Chris but I didn't catch it. It sounded like other fans were quite miffed that he gets applause for doing cover songs. :confused3

I'm sad to see Kevin go. I was cheering for him, probs because he is from my hometown, but he was growing on me. I hope when he goes back to school there aren't too many problems. I wonder how long the signs around town will stay up?

I know a lot of people think Kellie is annoying. But I believe her ditsy act is real. I have two friends that really are that ditsy. One is a sweetheart, wears her heart on her sleeve, but she can be quite dumb sometimes. If you called her ballsie she would have no idea what you were talking about. You constantly have to explain simple things to her. I love her to death though. The other asked me why carrot cake wasn't orange like a carrot. :sad2:

I am personally elated that Kevin went home instead of Bucky. He's not going to win, but then neither was Kevin. Kevin is only 16 and has many more years to make his dreams come true. Bucky is 28 or 29, from a small town and married. His dreams were probably slipping away. He seems like a genuinely good guy and I'm so glad he gets to tour. And for the poster who feels like he took Will's spot and Kevins tour - no offense, but he didn't take the spots, he earned them by getting more votes. No one is entitled to anything in this competition; it all depends on how the masses vote (hopefully that's really how it works). So to keep saying that he took someone else's spot seems like sour grapes to me.

I read somewhere again that next week's theme is "Top 10 songs of the 21st century".

I hope so. It should be good. Everyone gets to stay in their comfort range. Just to clarify, these would be songs that made the top 10 on the charts.

Happy to see Kevin go but I honestly was hoping it would be Bucky. He'll go eventually though. He's certainly not a threat for the title. It was so adorable to see Bobby with Barry! That cracked me right up.

As for Paula being replaced...meh. If they do, they do. I'm not sure who I'd prefer to see in that role. Maybe a rotating schedule of guest judges??

Also, is anyone else tired of Paula's Miss America answers to every single stinking question and for every performance review? I feel like she memorizes lines from poetry books or something before every show and recites them as her critique. It's really getting on my nerves

'I feel you are a flower waiting to bloom. You're leaves will sprout into wings and you will fly into superstardom, blah blah blah...' (insert fork into eye)

I think you're being too harsh on Paula. Years ago, when I lived in CA, I used to hang with a group of people & Paula was in the group. I was good friends with a guy who was probably John Stamos's best friend at that time, & he & Paula were dating. (Just to set a little history there...) So you kinda get to know someone (even tho Paula & I were never really buddies or anything ~ I just saw her when I was invited to hang with this particular group of people & we would just exchange a few words. I was the only 'non-industry' person in the group ~ everyone else had something to do with either music or TV production.) Anyway, point being, she was always very very sweet to everyone. She really does talk so sweet like that. She was always happy & smiling, of course, she was sitting on top of the world too ~ she was touring back then. She had a great relationship with Stamos at that time too.

From what I remember, she always had a smile for everyone & she was very close with her family & sometimes they were part of the "group" too. She treated everyone (including all her tour roadies) so sweetly. Always smiling, always happy & always so very nice to everyone she met. Some of the people that hung out in the group too were back from Paula's Laker Girl days so that should say something about her personally.

Just felt the need to defend her since some of you are being so cruel towards Paula & I remember her being such a sweet person. Personally, I have trouble understanding Randy Jackson ~ what language is he speaking most of the time?

AMEN!!! Bucky is so genuine it's hard NOT to like him. I'm very happy Bucky made it onto the tour - good for him.

Sorry if I offended you, but I honestly feel that Bucky is not that good at all. I thought Will was one of the best guys in the competition (I thought he was better than all the guys that got sent home before him, Bucky, Kevin, Ace and maybe even Elliot). I really feel that Will deserved to be in the top 12, and I just don't see how someone like Bucky could have beat him out. I'm sorry that my opinion isn't exactly the same as yours.

With regard to "the Paula thing"................I honestly think part of the entertainment of the show is watching Simon & Paula interact. They have that love/hate chemistry. I enjoy watching the 2 of them when they go at it!!! ;)

Thoughts on a variety of subjects:

- Glad Kevin is gone. As for people making fun of "his lisp, his looks, etc."...combined with a marked lack of talent, yeah, sounds like "Idol" material to me. :thumbsup2

- "Songs of the 21st Century" sounds like a good idea to me. These people are competing to put out a record that will contain contemporary music, so you should be able to tell a lot more by hearing them sing songs that aren't 50 years old.

- I could easily see replacing Paula with either Brittany or Jessica. Jessica is equally empty headed, and would likely stay with the positive comments. Brittany has had TEN TIMES the success that Paula ever did, by the way. I'm not a fan of either of them, but I could certainly see them doing as well or better than Paula.

- I don't get the Bucky hatred. :confused3 Is the guy the best singer I've ever heard, or even the best on this show? No. Is he the worst? Again, no, in both cases. Does he have a bad attitude that makes people dislike him? Not that I've noticed. So, I just don't get it.

- If that story is true, my respect for Taylor will diminish with the amount of gray in his hair. He strikes me as a very genuine guy that isn't hung up on his "image", but altering that image just because teeny-boppers are put off by his premature gray would put the lie to that. Besides...his sound fits his image, if that makes sense.

- Time for Lisa and Ace to step it up. Both have had stellar performances at one time or another, but both have been lackluster as well...and Ace has been just plain awful a couple times. I also think Elliot could do a lot better, and will need to if he is to keep pace with the best of the group.

- Last time about Kellie: I know people just like her. Maybe not quite so ditzy, but she strikes me as a genuine "country girl that ain't been outta the holler". She performed much better this week, and as long as she stays at the same level, she deserves to stay in the competition longer than a few of the others.

You didin't offend me. You have a right to your opinion, heck we all do. What is bothersome to me (and it just might be my grouchy pregnancy hormones :) ) is that you continue to say that Bucky took a spot that belonged to Will and now, Kevin because you liked them better. I'm sure you feel that is the case, but the fact that he is still here shows that he had a bit more support than those guys - but just a bit more, I'll admit.

Don't be sorry that we don't have the same opinion because if everyone agreed, there'd be no competition and we wouldn't have any reason to stake out our spot in front of the television twice a week! :teeth:

That's what makes AI a good reality show. If everyone liked the same people, it would never be the hit that it is.

Lots of people honestly feel the same way that you do but about different people and can't understand why everyone else doesn't see it their way. It makes for a fun show!

Personally, I think they should raise the age limit. The young guys seem to have a hard time competing with the older guys. It would be better if they waited a few years before they competed. I would have liked to see Will compete when he was about 19.

I agree with you, I don't get the Bucky hatred either.

If anyone thinks he can't sing - go and re-listen to Thunder Rolls, Simple Man or Wave on Wave - he rocks and I hate country music so that's saying something right there.

I don't think Bucky will win the thing but I'm glad that his fans have gotten him into the top 10 as that was HIS goal - to be able to tour this summer.

I think everyone knows somebody just like Kellie. That's the problem. :teeth:

Once again, I have bestowed the kiss of death. Last season whenever I voted for a contestant I didn't normally care for, sure enough, they were gone. Well I voted for Kevin this past week and *POOF*. Anyone want to get rid of one of the remaining 10? Just let me know. :teeth:

First, let me say, I don't hate Bucky but I also think he should have been gone. I also think both Kevin and Will could out sing him but it's not just that. He's just a lump on stage. He reminds me of someone who did this on a dare and is just going with the flow. To me he brings nothing special at all. He has no gimmick. Eh, it really doesn't matter that much. He won't be in the top 5 unless the ones I think will be there all fall on their faces.

The thing is, I can say the exact same thing about Kevin. Was he the best singer? No. Was he the worst? No. And did he have a bad attitude that made people dislike him? Again, definitely not. Yet people found a reason to bash him not only for his singing, but for his looks, lisp, etc.

If people are allowed to say such mean things about Kevin (especially things that aren't related to his singing), why can't some of us say that we just don't like Bucky? I have nothing wrong with him personally because I don't know the guy, but as for his singing, I don't like it. I guess the only reason the few of us aren't allowed to say we just don't like Bucky is because we're in the minority?? :confused3

I thought Clay Aiken was the best Idol contestant they've ever had, and I know a lot of people agree with me. Yet there are some people that thought he absolutely stunk. I can't really argue with that because that just happens to be their opinion. I wouldn't say I agreed with it, but if they don't like him, then whatever.

Um, the problem is that he was among the worst singers, if not the actual worst (and in many opinions, including my own, he was the absolute worst), and his attitude came across as fairly annoying, at best.

Look, I'm sure he's a great kid. But he'll never make a living as a singer. Most of the rest of the group will. I happen to agree with you that Will should have been in the Top 12, as I think he had talent and a lot of potential. But it was Kevin that undeservingly "took his spot", not Bucky. Any of the three songs Bucky recently performed that dturner pointed out - Thunder Rolls, Simple Man, and Wave on Wave - would fit right in on country or "southern rock" radio, right now. Absolutely nothing Kevin did was good enough to get airtime anywhere.

I don't get the argument that anyone "took" anyone else's spot. We, America, the voting public, determined who got those spots. Each of us has their own preferences and may not agree with the complete list, but the majority ruled in each case. No one "stole" anything from anyone else. Those who have been cut just didn't get as many votes as those who are still there. It's that simple.

I actually like Bucky. I have a thing for gravelly voiced, raw singers. I don't believe for a moment that he's the best or that he'll win. Still, I like him. He seems like a sweet guy and a real diamond in the rough. He just needs some coaching and I could see him doing quite well.

I don't think Kellie is a bad singer but I agree that the country bumpkin act has gotten old. In this day and age I can't believe it's really not an act. She doesn't live in a tar paper shack in Cow Pie Holler, KY. She lives in Albemarle, NC and has a job and goes to school. She can't possibly be that stupid

I don't feel that I'm being harsh, just sharing my opinion. I have been labeled as a syrupy sweet person too, so to me, I don't think that's what she is being. It's not saying sweet things to them that bothers me, it's the way she sounds so rehearsed. It's like she planned out quotes to say to them and it sounds so impersonal.
