American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread**

When Kevin performed, it was my time to go make popcorn. He gave me the creeps. Now, when am I suppose to do it? :goodvibes

Correct....he is good for the local theatre musicals or maybe a children's CD.

I agree, I actually saw him doing Broadway plays more so than being the next American Idol.

Being a huge fan of Broadway, I have to say that I seriously doubt that this will happen. I just don't think he has the voice for it. (And I'm really trying to refrain from the "Thuddenly Theemore" joke ;) Not making fun of people with lisps...just saying that they shouldn't necessarily go into the music business.)

He seems like a good kid, for the most part, but I will be flat-out stunned if he ends up making a living in anything that involves singing.

Also, I would think that the contestants would be more respectful of Barry during his limited time on stage, especially since he took his time and money to help them this past week. The one-on-one assistance he provided was invaluable. I would think they would be able to curb the chatter till he at least exited the stage. ;)

That is exactly why it surprised me that they were acting that way. He took a week to help them improve & she couldn't clap for him better than that? At least the guy who said that he hadn't been a Barry fan before had gained alot of respect for him after working with him & realizing how much knowledge he had to share.

ITA I, too, am a big fan of musicals. Broadway stars have huge voices. He may make it at local theater. He is good but not broadway good. I liked him but was surprised he made the final 12. I wish him luck though. He had a great ride while it lasted.

He's just your average kid who can carry a tune. He's by no means a performer.

Oh, fer' cryin' out loud. She is a 16 year old kid who probably thought all of her dreams of winning on Idol were about to come to an end. I think it's safe to say that she was probably just a bit preoccupied, and that may have distracted her from applauding wildly for an old man who hasn't had a real hit since before she was born.

'Course...that's just my opinion. :teeth:

Just chiming in here. I'm really enjoying this years competition! I think the talent is diversified and that is why there is such a strong debate here and just about everywhere else.

I like Mandisa, she has such power when she sings. This week was very good.

I think that Elliot can sing, although I don't always like his choices. This weeks seemed to be a difficult choice.

Paris is not a favorite of mine, I find her annoying.

Lisa is young, but I bet if she had another two years to mature, she could play with the big girls. Maybe 16 is too young to compete with people who are over 25?

Katherine: I don't know why, but I just don't like her. I don't even have a good reason.

Ace: I think he sings the same song over and over again....just changes the words.

Now I like Kelly. I like her voice, and I thought that a Patsy Cline choice would work for her. I think it did. DH and I think we hear a little early Tanya Tucker in her voice.

I also like Bucky. I went to school in the early seventies, and I am reminded of the southern rockers I used to hear. Not hard rock, not country. A style all its own. I hope that he has some more time. Can you tell I get nostalgic a lot? :goodvibes

I feel a little bad for Kevin. He is really too young to be competing here, and I think that while his being there generates a lot of calls, I wonder if he feels bad about all of the negative comments heaped upon him.

I think Taylor and Chris are favorites, but I am not sure how I feel about Chris. I agree that he can sing, but I agree that there seem to be two different standard in play her, one for Chris and one for all of the other contestants.

This is a lot of rambling, but the one thing I miss about working is that there is no one around during the day to talk about AI! So glad that this thread is here!

I think Paula is of the mindset... if you cant something nice dont say nothing at all..(like Thumper)
She does try to focus on something postive in everyones performance.

Ive been reading these massive amounts of posts and havnet commented much until the previous post.
My favoirte is Taylor
As for the poster who would be upset if he colored his hair??
Why??
People do things to improve their own self image all the time
Does it lessen their talent?
Actors gain and lose weight for roles
Go from blonde to red to brunette
Im hoping the Mandisa is in the top 3 and not Kellie
As far as Kellie being a dumb blonde as an act,,
I work with plenty of people just lile her

On replacing Paula....

If it does happen, Gladys Knight would be an excellent judge. Did anyone see her as a judge on American Juniors? She was excellent.

Gladys Knight also did an episode of AI2 and was great.

I doubt Paula is going anywhere, but my nominee for replacing her goes to Sass Jordan (cue everybody but Damo saying "WHO?????")

Sass Jordan is the female judge on Canadian Idol. There seems to be suspicion that Sass is drunk sometimes on air, but everytime I've seen a clip of her she seems to offer good comments and criticism, which is necessary for a judge on AI. Paula doesn't do much of that at all (I'm sorry but calling Mandisa a Thoroughbred or telling Ace he has 34 signs in the audience is useless commentary)

Here are some Paula replacement suggestions:
Patti Labelle
Aretha Franklin -soul R & B direction
Bette Midler (that would be awesome-Divine Miss M)
Dolly Parton
Barbara Mandrell -if they want to go country
Bonnie Raitt
Carly Simon
Melissa Etheridge (is she well now?)
heck, even Celine Dion for the pop type genre

I'd love to see Carly Simon or Aretha.

I adore Carly Simon and would love to see her too, but she battles stage fright. I don't think it'll be likely. Bette Midler would also be good. She's a hoot.

Haha!! Cue all the Canadians to say... "Are you nuts!!!"

Actually, she's not that bad. She's a rocker who is now a young mom with a rock guitar husband and is very connected with the modern music world.

She's a little ballsy though!!! :rotfl2:

Slacking, she's got the type of voice that you like. Sultry, with an edge.

What's a ballsy?

Sorry..... couldn't help myself!

Hmmmm...... haven't heard her sing, maybe I'll have to look for some of her songs.

Bette Midler would be GREAT! She so talented and personable and experienced that I think that she would fit right in. Dolly Parton is sweet and a very funny lady but I don't know how much knowledge she would have. I'm kind of surprised that Gladys Knight isn't on there. I always liked her.

As for Bucky taking someone's spot, I don't think that's a fair comment. He won fair and square by getting more votes than those who left just like they got more votes themselves before they were voted off. This has nothing to do with saying that you like a performer or not, it's just acknowledging that they won their spot.
