American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

And why didn't Kellie get to sing? Last week they had all three of the bottom three sing (right? or was that the week before?) and this week they couldn't fit in ONE? I don't get it. If she didn't want to sing Unchained Melody she could have chosen one of her better songs.
Sing, they didn't even let her finish talking before they left.

Go Catherine!!

i totally agree! and why didnt they bash paris for trying to sing BARBARA STRIESAND?
I totally agree BUT Simon did say he made a mistake and apologized to Cat.

Go Catherine!!

I am beyond thankful that KEllie didn't get to sing at the end of the show last night. Maybe rude to her, but it was torture the first time, why make us suffer again. Also the show was running long.

After being in the bottom 2 last week, I was HAPPY to see Chris in the top 2 this week! :cheer2:

Not to bash Taylor, but I did get a little chuckle when they showed the look on his face after realizing that he and Elliott were in the middle two and not the top two as assumed. Sorry Charlie!

As a previous poster said, what did ever happen to the group songs on elimination night? I miss those.
And what is with them running out of time at the end of each show lately? Maybe if they didnt spend so much time on the judge's bickering they might have time to give Chris is comments (Tuesday night) and let Kellie sing (last night).??

This is for all the Kellie haters. :teeth:

This morning Bucky was on our local news and they had Kellie on from Hollywood. Bucky said something and Kellie said, "Bucky, you hit the nail on the target." They corrected Kellie and then she said, "head, target same thing."

Anyone know what they will be singing next week or who the guest singer will be?

Each contestant sings two songs, one from their birth year and one from the charts this week.

Twice now Taylor has been made to change his song choice with less than two solid days to practice - last week and the country week. Both weeks seemed to be his worst performance and its easy to see why. How much practice time could he have gotten with the band during that short timeframe?

He also did one of his best performances when he switched songs. That is when he switched from We are the Champions to Crazy Little thing called Love. So, that theory just doesn't hold up.

I think Taylor gets distracted in a song. He is focussing on one part and he completely forgets to emote when he is singing another. Then he gets to the focussed part and is awesome.

All the contestants have downsides. We just see the downside as larger in our less favourite contestants.

i was hoping that it would be a two way tie for last place and both kellie and paris would leave last night.

still a taylor fan.

Chris vs Taylor

Taylor wins...he is just better, more versatile, more fun

I have to disagree. While I think both are very talented, Chris showed his versatility the past two weeks. His preference may be rock, but he has the chops to handle most genres of music. Taylor seems to have more problems moving out of his comfort zone.

As it was, the show ran 13 seconds long. I know; I put it on the air in Philly. ;)

I don't get it why they would want to lose??????? :confused3 It hasn't done anything for any of them except Clay. Even Justin fizzled fast. So out of all the idols in 4 season's only 1 person has done anything-- that hasn't won the "title". I am not being sarcastic... this is the first season I have watch from the begining so I am curious. ;)

Huh? You are saying you don't think the AI exposure has done anything for anyone but Clay? :confused3

What about Kelly Clarkson? She is by far the most successful Idol winner. But plenty of them have gone on to greater things. Josh Gracin's first album did quite well in the country market, Carrie Underwood is also focusing on the country audience, and doing very well there with her first album. Both Reuben and Fantasia have done well in the R&B genre. Jennifer Hudson landed a huge role for the film version of Dream Girls. Diana DeGarmo is currently on Broadway, playing Penny Pingleton in Hairspray. All of the Idol top 12 net at the very least about $200,000 from the tour, which is not too shabby considering most of them were starving artists (or high school kids) before AI.

r3angels was commenting on the fact that many runners-up don't "make it" huge in the business. While it's true that Jennifer Hudson would never gotten her role in Dreamgirls if not for Idol, if you look at the record sales of those who didn't win Idol, the results aren't great. Sure, Josh Gracin is a moderate success in the country market, but Latoya London - someone many people thought was the best in the competition - couldn't get anyone to buy her album. Same thing with Tamyra Gray from Season One. Look at Diana DeGarmo's middling record sales. Don't get me wrong...she was great in Hairspray (our family saw it in February), but she certainly isn't raking in the dough like Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood.

I think the point is that unless you win, your chances of succeeding have not proven very fruitful when looking at the past Idol contestants. Winning isn't always proving to be an across-the-board success either. While Ruben may have had a hit gospel record, his sales aren't skyrocketing.

I was asking about those who haven't won... I know Kelly- believe me I know Kelly I have 3 girls, she IMHO is a household name, at least in my household. I know Carrie- love her song, and Fantasia and Reuben but I was asking about those NOT winning. Besides Clay (and I guess Jennifer, Diana, and Penny- but I don't think Chris and Taylor would be happy with the broadway circuit :teeth: ) What would the benefit of not winning? It has been mentioned that Taylor or Paris doesn't want to win. Don't they really need to win to make it (beyond the first tour/interviewing year) :confused3

Yes, exactly what I meant. :thumbsup2 You said it so much better. :goodvibes Like I said this is the first time I have watched every episode from begining to end, I really am just asking not judging.

::yes:: I agree with you. Taylor has looked very uptight and uncomfortable lately. I don't think Chris has always got the credit he deserves for showing different sides.

Ha ha ha!! Kellie's gone. :thumbsup2 I don't guess many people "picked Pickler." I may sound mean but she needed to go!!! Whee....... :sunny: :thumbsup2 :cheer2: Chris was in the top two!!!! :sunny: :sunny: :thumbsup2 :goodvibes :cheer2: :cloud9:

I saw that this morning and I think Bucky is the most down to earth guy. But that shows that Kelly was not acting on stage she is really like that in real life .

From what I have heard though, Taylor had almost a week between the change of songs and the performance for Queen night. Not a last minute "Oh we decided you can't do this song" thing they threw at him at the last minute.

I think that these band singers have a whole repetoire of songs that they have performed and probably very few are brand new songs that they need to learn. From what I understand, the contestants submit several songs that they want to sing in the theme of the week. The one that they finally decided upon would have been one that he had submitted since it needed clearance. If he didn't like the song, he shouldn't have submitted it. I remember Bo Bice saying that they always rehearse more than one song, so I would imagine that he had a few up his sleeve.

I felt that he was emotionally separated from the song. All he needed to do was care a little bit and the song would have been great. When he glues himself behind the mike stand, he doesn't perform nearly as well as when he lets his body feel the music. Taylor needs to quit restraining himself and return to the Taylor that auditioned.
