American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

I was talking about AI with my sister and some of her friends yesterday and one of them said she was very upset that Carrie Underwood won last year because she continually forgot her lyrics. Well, I'm not a huge Carrie Underwood fan (I wanted Bo or Constantine to win), but I don't remember that about her! This girl said that Simon was constantly telling her that if she didn't start remembering her lyrics she would blow her chance to win the show. She continued to say that for this reason she thinks the show is "fixed" from the beginning. That the powers that be choose the winner from the start and control the call ins in order for that person to win. Well...I don't know about all that, but I still don't remember CU forgetting her lyrics. Does anyone else?

I don't remember Carrie EVER forgetting her lyrics last year.

7. Ace: A pretty face, a nice guy, good voice. Maybe he'll get some walk-on roles on some sitcoms.

Funny you should say this. I saw him on Half and Half (UPN show) 2 weeks ago playing a baseball player who wanted to be a singer! He wasn't half bad, either!

This girl is seriously mistaken. I adored Carrie and saw every performance and never do I remember anyone saying a word about her forgetting her words because she didn't. Most of the time, if Simon criticized her, it was about her wardrobe...

Anyone catch Bucky on Ellen today? I just love him! Anyhow, he sang Superstition with just a piano, and he sounded better than he did on the show! Without the loud band to drown him out, that boy can really sing, and you can understand every word! I love his voice - I can't wait until he releases a CD.

1. Chris: The best overall. He's got stellar talent, and is the most likely to be able to forge the most successful career as a recording artist.

2. Katherine: Great voice, stunningly beautiful, very marketable.

3. Taylor: Very entertaining. The most likely person to be this year's "Constantine" -- i.e., successful, but just not as a recording artist.

4. Kellie: Good voice, especially in her element. I don't mean to dis Country, but it seems to me that it is easier to be a great Country singer than a great Pop singer.

5. Paris: One day, she'll be great.

6. Elliott: Great voice, but not someone I think many people would purchase albums for or concert tickets for.

7. Ace: A pretty face, a nice guy, good voice. Maybe he'll get some walk-on roles on some sitcoms.
Wow! I agree completely, except for me, I would have switched Kellie and Paris around. Other than that, my order is the same, and why.

My rankings --

1. Taylor -- I think he's extremely entertaining and he seems like the one person that is 100% having fun with the whole experience. Plus, he can turn out some great performances.

2. Katherine -- attractive and great voice. I had problems with her performance last week, but I can forgive her for smiling for the camera this time as long as she doesn't do it again when singing a sad song.

3. Elliott -- I honestly think he's the dark horse in this competition. This week should be his week to shine. Great voice and I think he's slowly but surely becoming more comfortable on stage.

4. Chris -- A few weeks ago I would've had him at #2, but all his performances are starting to blend together. Still, I like him and have to agree with whoever said he'd be a great front man for a band.

5. Ace -- He's good but I'm not a fan of the falsetto. Maybe as part of a boy band.

6. Paris -- Great voice, but I'm still having a hard time forgiving her performance last week. Plus, I get this diva-attitude vibe from her that I find extremely annoying.

7. Kellie -- am I the only one that hears Miss "I don't have an accent"'s twang coming through in her singing? It may not hurt her as a country singer, but it severely limits her range outside that genre. Also, the ditzy blonde thing is wearing thin. I could see a 19 year old girl from small town NC not knowing what calamari is, but she's milking it too much. With practice she could be a great singer. She definitely has the "poor girl makes it big" history that people love and Simon could market.

You finally nailed it for me. I thought that I disliked her because she was young and childish, but now that you say it, she does have a diva thing going on. That is exactly it.

Spoiler for Elliott for tonight. Highlight to view.

It had to be you.

They are about to interview Bucky on the Kidd Kraddick show!

What a great interview. He is such an awesome guy. They told him that they think Kellie Pickler is making the south look stupid and that they think it's all an act. He was so diplomatic and said something to the effect that a lot of people feel that way, but whatever works for her. They told him he was so nice and that they knew he wouldn't talk bad about anyone. His exact comment was, "You can hate me, but I'm not gonna hate back". What a wonderful attitude for him to have.

One of the guys on the show, Big Al, asked him if he'd give him a shout out on the Today show. Bucky was so cool. He said, I could say something like, "When I went to the auditions, *Big Al*, and I moved on to the next, *Big Al*, level. :rotfl:

What a great personality. He also said he never know how bad his accent was until he heard himself on television.

They asked him if he had a time limit on success. He said that he used to say he'd give up if he hadn't made it by age 30. He says now he's moving to Nashville and he might extend that to 35, or 40 or maybe 60. :)

Again, I will buy his cd the day he puts one out and that's saying a lot since I don't even have a cd player.

This is about the way I think, too...

The only difference is I love falsetto. Grew up on some of the best, Eddie Kendricks of the Temps, Russell Thompkins Jr of the Stylistics, Phillip Bailey of Earth Wind and Fire, even Prince has a great falsetto. The fact that so many people on this board doesn't like it amazed me! But then again "to each his own"...

Man, I showed your synopsis of Kellie to my office and everyone totally agreed. It's wearing thin on ALL of us and we're in the SOUTH!! Like my co-worker said "NO ONE is THAT stupid!!
:p

Thanks for the great report. :)

I always felt that Bucky was a really nice person and I think that if he's handled right, he can make it. It's nice when good people are successful so I'll be rooting for him! :cheer2:

Robin, I agree with you about Prince. Thing is, he has much more range than Ace. Also agree with you about "to each his own." Everyone has different tastes. :)

I think all southerners can take heart in that of the 7 remaining, 5 are from the south -- Taylor from AL, Paris from GA, Kellie from NC, Elliott from VA, and Chris born in VA now living in NC. Unfortunately the stereotype is getting all the attention.

Darn it, I'm missing Bucky on all the talk shows - darn work!!!

Chris Daughtry spoiler:

Chris Daughtry - "Night and Day".

I don't know that song - I'm thinking tonight is going to be a boring night on AI.

I heard on tonight's show the singers have to stick to the original arrangements of the classic songs. They wont be able to change them.

If this is the case, then none of the stupid judges better comment on how someone did or did not "make the song their own".

Sounds like it will be a boring night.

Go Chris!!!!!!!!!! :cheer2:
