American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

Song choices for tomorrow night (highlight to view):

•Ace Young, We Will Rock You: "I urbanized the verses a little, just by riding on (the notes). I put a little R&B soul on it. When we were done, they said, 'That sounds like a record.' "
•Bucky Covington, Fat Bottomed Girls: "Yes, we all love the fat-bottomed girls."
•Chris Daughtry, Innuendo: "It's a relatively unknown song. It just had a mixture of a dark feel and a positive message. And I just found out they've never performed this live."
•Elliott Yamin, Somebody to Love: "I was drawn to the passionate emotion of the song. I heard a lot of soul in it."
•Katharine McPhee, Who Wants to Live Forever: "How could (this) not be fun? We're working with so many different legends."
•Kellie Pickler, Bohemian Rhapsody: "We only have 1 minute and 30 seconds, and the song is really long. Having to cut so many pieces is really hard to memorize, because I'm not singing the song as it's originally played."
•Paris Bennett, The Show Must Go On: "Being with the band was a big experience to me, never being with a rock band before. I was able to pick a song that fits me, that's still rocky."
•Taylor Hicks, Crazy Little Thing Called Love: "You listen to a Queen song, it's really melodic and very powerful, and the dynamics (are) really cool."

So... How was it?

She hasn't been yet. Both the dress rehearsal and live taping take place today. That is just the song list that was posted in USA Today.

Well..I for one hope the list is correct. Sounds like they made some good choices...night might not be so bad after all.

Looks like the band was worried at first about an AI butcher of their music:
May and drummer Roger Taylor, whose Queen hits with Mercury included Another One Bites the Dust and Somebody to Love, said they initially were reticent about getting involved with a pop reality contest but were pleasantly surprised none of the finalists killed the band's songs. "I thought they had some depth and some soul and some rock and roll," Taylor said.

Although this really scares me..

Is that right? I couldn't hear myself," Pickler asked after a countrified take of the late Freddie Mercury's melancholy solo in Bohemian Rhapsody

Countrified??? :scared:

The list just sounds fishy to me. Katharine is singing the song that Mandisa said she was singing!?!?!

Kellie, Kelllie, what are you thinking? Do NOT countrify Bohemian Rhapsody!

Can't be any worse than Ace urbanizing WWRY. What does that mean, "urbanizing" anyway? Watering it down? Sweetening it up? Boy banding it? Not smart.

I think that Simon Cowell should start a new show called American Pretty Boy.

I'm different I guess because I'd rather see a pretty boy do a decent version (I hope) of an easier song than some ditzy girl butchering Bohemian Rhapsody. I'll try to keep an open mind but I have a bad feeling about this.

Meanwhile, I'm hopeful for Chris and Bucky, GO guys!

"Countrified version of Bohemian Rhapsody??"

Shoot me now. Please.

The other choices sound great. Katharine's song is one of my favorite Queen songs and actually the one I picked for her when I first heard about the theme. I'd forgotten about Chris' song (my pick for him was "Princes of the Universe") but I think he'll do well with it. Taylor has something that will allow him to be lively. All the others I'm hopeful that they'll do a halfway decent job (even Ace, with a little R&B on that song).

Kellie's pick? :sad2: I just hope she doesn't stop in the middle and ask "What's a scaramouch?"

And let's all be thankful no one chose to do "Flash." :p

For non-CI watchers (and I only watched the video because I heard it was amusing), this past season in one of the semi-final rounds (they use the format AI used in AI-Ai3) a girl attempted to sing Bohemian Rhapsody. Hilarity Ensued.

I can't wait for the hilarity tonight .

This is going to be so bad tonight. I'll have my thumb resting on the Mute button.

And Kellie's choice..... :faint:

Oops!

Thanks for the clarification. In that case, disregard the question I asked, ChrisNSteph, didn't mean to get personal. ;)
