American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

Anyone watching Chris on Ellen, he's going to sing!

Just watched it, he was great, I'll miss him tonight. At least I won't be disappointed with the finale because I like all the remaining contestants the same and really don't care which one takes it.

I was in the Regis & Kelly audience LIVE yesterday. I was in the 3rd row center right behind Jeff's family. I wore Orange Nascar colors.
Chris was amazing and very personable and funny. I was sitting right next to the two young girls from Maryland that had Chris posters. Chris talked to them during the break and even signed their posters. Chris's wife was standing on the side watching the performance and Chris introduced us to her during the commercial. It was a good show.
Michele

VERY COOL Michelle!

I tivo'd the show, I will have to re-watch and look for you!
Was Chris as cute in person??

You lucky dog!

I agree. Elliott is going to have trouble with "Open Arms" that is a VERY hard song to sing.

What are the other songs? Does anyone have a list of all three songs for all three of the contestants? (My computer is running slow and it's taking me forever to flip through pages.)
Thanks!

Clive Davis choices:

Elliott - Open Arms
Kat - I Believe I Can Fly
Taylor - Dancing in The Dark

Judges choices:

Elliott - What You Won't Do For Love
Kat - Somewhere Over The Rainbow
Taylor - You Are So Beautiful

I actually have not seen Kat's judges choice confirmed, but it does seem to be the only one floating around for her.

That's weird because in the live interviews I've seen, he has been nothing but gracious. What I've also seen is two different reporters using the exact same group interview material and coming up with different interviews. I don't trust these written interviews to be truthful to what actually was said.

There seem to be more people whining about the whining than those actually whining!!! Chris fans realize that he is much better off where he is than actually winning the competition (as the winner's fans will know when he/she puts out a first album)

Glad someone else was able to realize that about the so-called whining! We do have the right to be upset over what happened, and I'm sorry if those who didn't like him think we whine because of it.

Chris is going to do well, and has moved on. I also agree with you about the interviews. I have to hear it to believe it, and what I've heard has been nothing but positive and non-arrogant.

Here is the interview I spoke of. It was shortly after the elimination. He blames his fans for not voting enough to keep him in. That they were busy voting for who they wanted to see him go up against? And when asked what was interesting about the final three he snapped that it wasn't relevant. I wouldn't say this interview is extremely gracious.

Chris Interview

The interview was written on a reality tv magazine website, that being said, if it's all correct, here's how I interpreted it:

When being asked about the other 3, Chris politely replied he did not want to get into that. He was persisted, and said it was not relevant after already saying he didn't want to discuss it. As far as snapped, that's the writer's word.

And suggested that maybe people didn't vote as much? I don't see anything wrong with saying that. Those were probably his initial thoughts, and yesterday on Regis said that he knows that a lot of people did vote for him. (or try to, in my opinion, I'll stop that there)

Kat's choice is definately confirmed. :)

Well one person may think that Chris was being arrogant, where another would disagree. Just like some people think that Kat is arogant, and I disagree. Does it all really matter?

There are 3 talented people still remaining on American Idol. Let's not forget about them! :)

Of the 3 left, I think Elliot has the most talent. I've never seen him miss a note. He will also make it no matter what the outcome!

Well said, fanofdisney! Can't wait to see him perform tonight. :Pinkbounc

My personal thoughts on the song choices:

Clive Davis choices:

Elliott - Open Arms - Oh, goodie. I get to hear how Dr. Dilamond would sound singing one of my all time favorite Jounrey tunes (and if you don't know Dr. Dilamond...go see "Wicked" ;) ). Nothing like watching one of your favorite songs get butchered.

Kat - I Believe I Can Fly - What is Clive smoking? Look, I LOVE Kat, and think she's MUCH more deserving of making the final than her Leprecaun-ish competitor for the spot opposite Taylor, but this is a horrid song, even when it's sung exceptionally well. Add in her tendency to "trick up" simple songs, and this could be a disaster waiting to happen.

Taylor - Dancing in The Dark - Not a huge fan of the Boss', but I can definitely see Taylor singing this and doing it extremely well. The crowd will be into it, Simon will make his nth reference to a wedding singer, and Taylor will waltz into the finals regardless.

Judges choices:

Elliott - What You Won't Do For Love - Yet another from Goatboy's ever expanding repetoir of "songs nobody cares about 'cause they're not as hip as me in my Leprecaun in the Hood kinda way". Goody. Can he just go home now? Pretty please?

Kat - Somewhere Over The Rainbow - One of the most beautiful songs of all time...so long as it's not tricked up too badly (X-tina does a rendition I don't care for, and same with Jewel, and I love both of their voices). If Kat really hits on this one it could be the performance of the night. If she butchers it by trying to go X-tina...she may just put the final nail in her coffin.

Taylor - You Are So Beautiful - Hey, it's Taylor singing Joe Cocker. If there was ever an artist T was made to sing, it would be Joe Cocker. This is right in his wheelhouse, and I fully expect a great performance out of him on this one. Anything less than that would be a dissappointment.

I'll make the prediction right now...Kat and Taylor in the finals (and Elliott fans complaining about the unfairness of it all, while he goes back to live under the bridge where he came from ;) ).

I think he (Elliott) tries the hardest and perhaps wants it more

I think Taylor is just having a fun time

Just a guess, but were you one of those mean bullies in school that called all the other kids names?

Thank you so much!

I have a sinking feeling that Kat will over sing "Rainbow". "Rainbow" is like "Tomorrow" from Annie. They're both very sad songs, and should be sung as such. For whatever reason, everyone wants to belt them out at the top of their lungs.

You know, I don't think Elliott is the best singer, and I definitely don't think he should have outstayed Chris, but I am ready to throw ALL of my votes his way REGARDLESS of his performance, because of insults like this. He is a regular guy! Maybe not the most handsome, maybe not the most talented, but what has he ever done to deserve such venom? :confused3

Ladies, please...lighten up a little. Elliot is not reading these boards, nor is anyone that knows him personally. If that were the case, yes, I would certainly moderate my comments to things like "I do not think he is nearly as talented as the rest of the top 5, let alone the top 3." Nor is he a child whose feelings would be hurt by comment by some anonymous poster on a predominately Disney message board (and believe me, I'm nowhere near as vicious as the posters on some other boards are towards him).

Why any "venom" at all? Because I think he is where he is out of nothing more than pity, while more deserving - read: more talented - contestants (Chris and Paris, at the least) have been sent home. Oh, I admit that there is a bit of :stir: in my "goatboy" and "Dr. Dilamond" references. But I honestly do not find the guy appealing in any fashion. Not his look, not his sound, not his history (as a high school dropout), not his performances (the little hip-hop "bounce" and the weird faces)....I do not like anything about him. Nor do I understand completely how anybody could, while still acknowledging that people still buy Britney Spears albums, so obviously musical accomplishment is not something everyone looks for.

I honestly do not mean to offend, and apologize if I have done so. There have been any number of people on this thread and others that have slammed Taylor, and called him a "spaz" and said that he doesn't have a good voice (wrong). I just laugh at such comments, as I have a very different opinion, and don't much care that they don't agree with me. Obviously, several of you disagree with my opinion that Elliot looks like the guy out of the Leprecaun movies, and that's fine. I don't care that you disagree...so why do so many of you get so touchy that I disagree with you? :confused3

I agree that both of these songs definitely can be oversung, but I completely disagree that they are sad songs. They are both songs of hope and optimism for a better life than what the characters have at the time. There may be some sadness that generates the songs, but I think these are both uplifting songs to Dorothy and Annie. Maybe this is why people sing the last refrains of these with such volume...they really want us to know that they will overcome, with as much voice possible. Personally, I hope Kat really nails the song tonight without oversinging it. It's a great choice for her voice.

Hmmm...while I'd love to whine about the people whining about the other people (like me) whining about the whining over Chris's departure (got that?), I'll refrain ;). :teeth:

Anyway, I honestly can't see Kat singing "I Believe I Can Fly." I think, like others have said, she'll try to sing to much in the upper register which isn't her strong point. I would've been much happier with "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." I think she could've really won with that one.

Oh well. I don't have much hope for her tonight...so I hope I'll be pleasantly surprised. :)

Poor Kat. Of the three, she is my least favorite, but I think they are setting her up to do bad by giving her those lame songs! Not fair!

She's a really beautiful girl and I can see her doing VERY well on Broadway. I just don't see her singing pop music.

I just watched Simon on Jay Leno (I Tivod it). Did you all catch where he said that Elliott has one of the best voices they've ever had on the show? I've always liked Simon. . . . :teeth:
