An Aging Viewer: The aging of the viewer on prime time broadcast network television has been prevalent for a number of years. American Idol has not been an exception.
Despite an age cap of 28 on contestants, according to Nielsen, the median age for the reality show has risen each season from 31.9 in 2002 to 51.2 in 2013. As a result the Adult 18-49 rating, a popular demographic for advertisers, was 3.8 in 2013, the lowest ever recorded in one season. As a result the advertising rate for American Idol has dropped. According to Advertising Age annual survey, the cost for a :30 ad on Wednesdays Performance Show has dropped from over $500,000 in 2012 to about $356,000 for this season.
They are DESPARATELY trying to pull in that younger demographic with the likes of Sam. Don't know if it will work, I don't think he has that kind of appeal. They NEED a David Cook/David Archuleta combo to attract the wider range of ages.
