American Idol Season 13 Official Thread

One of the reasons I like Alex is because I think he is an artist. His original song was really, really good. He seems to be able to consistently alter things well. I think his voice is easily identifiable above the others (Jena would be close) and he'd fit right in with current artists out there.

Of the final five I don't HATE any of them... which is RARE!:lmao:

I really like them all in completely different ways.

All of the cannon fodder is GONE so it's time to find a winner... I think they all deserve it but some more than others.

....absolutely! Too many of the contestants are BABIES!

It's a matter of perspective. Looking at it the OTHER way......does this mean.....that too many of us Dis-sers on this thread.....

....are either Cougars.......or Old Fogies???

Interesting discussion about personal tastes and musical likes.

Of the 5 that are left, the only one that I don't care for is Jessica. Not because she can't sing....she has an amazing voice....but because she just doesn't connect with me.

Of the other 4, it will come down to the voting public, of which I'm not one of them. I suspect that Sam has the inside running to the finals because of the teeny-bopper voting viewers. They'll keep voting for him; same way they voted for Kris Allen.

My personal taste runs into alternative, jazz and classical. Of the 5 that are left, the ones that I would buy (given a couple of years to tone down) are Jena and Alex. I would prefer to see the final 3 as Caleb, Jena and Alex. I think I've been calling it an Alex vs Caleb final for the longest time. Now, I'm not so sure.

The way this season is cast, any fan over 25 would be a cougar or an old fogie.

As far as taste goes my opinion keeps changing. I liked Caleb early on but now I'm growing tired of him as the weeks pass on. Jena is growing on me slowly and then there are times where I am not a fan of a performance she does. Alex reminds me of a mix of Lee Dewyze and Phillip Phillips in terms of music style and performance. Sam I want to say he's a singer/songwriter like Alex but then at times I'm not sure either with that. Jessica, I couldn't stand her to begin with but she has grown on me the past few weeks. Right now I'm not sure I would buy any of the albums, I would have to really listen to the material before I think about buying it. I can see maybe Jessica or Alex being ones I might buy, it's hard to say this far out. Either way outside of the winner I'm not sure any of them will end up signed right away. Times have changed and the industry is hard to be in, especially in country where Jessica wants to probably plant her roots.

We actually reflect the show's demographics:

From Forbes.com http://www.forbes.com/sites/bradadgate/2014/01/10/will-the-13th-season-be-lucky-for-american-idol/

An Aging Viewer: The aging of the viewer on prime time broadcast network television has been prevalent for a number of years. American Idol has not been an exception. Despite an age cap of 28 on contestants, according to Nielsen, the median age for the reality show has risen each season from 31.9 in 2002 to 51.2 in 2013. As a result the Adult 18-49 rating, a popular demographic for advertisers, was 3.8 in 2013, the lowest ever recorded in one season. As a result the advertising rate for American Idol has dropped. According to Advertising Age annual survey, the cost for a :30 ad on Wednesday’s Performance Show has dropped from over $500,000 in 2012 to about $356,000 for this season.
They are DESPARATELY trying to pull in that younger demographic with the likes of Sam. Don't know if it will work, I don't think he has that kind of appeal. They NEED a David Cook/David Archuleta combo to attract the wider range of ages.

What do you think of Harry Connick Jr as a judge? DS is a professional musician in NYC, and he was telling me that the show has gained a lot of "respectability" this year among his friends now that Harry Connick Jr., who (in their eyes at least)has some respect as a musician, is judging. I suppose, when you compare him to Ellen DeGeneris, who even admitted herself that she wasn't qualified to judge, he's better. It seems that the contestants listen to Harry Connick and respect what he says somewhat-it kind of reminds me of Simon Cowell. You might not like what he says but….

I don't mind the judges at all. Sometimes I think HCJ tries a little bit too hard to be funny and it doesn't work. I would just like it if they raised the age and put it back to where the judges/producers chose the final 30 or so and then let America vote for the top 10.

You only have to compare him to last years debacle....:crazy2:... and he looks like Shakespeare judging a writing contest!

I hate the funny crap they inject, probably based on the Voice's "bromance" between Adam and Blake. They did try to get little Keith in on it but he didn't bite. Now they have him and Ryan acting a fool and it's embarrassing... and not cute at all.

I love all three of the judges- I also like how much they fool around with each other!

I like all the judges. I'm really glad that Randy is finally off the judging panel. And his role this year adds nothing to the show.

As for Harry, he is serious when it comes to judging. I do find him a bit arrogant and condescending from time to time (but not in a Simon Cowell way). I do miss Simon though.

I like the judges and am really enjoying HCJ. The only person I can think of that I might have liked would be Neil Patrick Harris.

I did not think I would like JLo after her season of over gushing on a particular contestant. She seems to have toned it down some this year. She still gets emotionally into it but she is not so over the top.

Keith, he can do no wrong in my book. I just wish I could be a contestant so he could call me baby. LOL.

Ryan? I think he tries WAY too hard to be funny or part of the "cool kids" and he just can't do it.

Randy? Two words ----Jimmy Iovine.

I do agree they need to raise the age limit. 18-30 would be good. For some reason Idol seems to want a teenager to be the next Idol. I guess they want to promote a train wreck--- IE: Beiber, Gomez and Cyrus.

I was just watching something on one of the music channels where they were saying that females just aren't being played on country radio right now. It's all "ball cap and beer drinking" that is popular now and that is what the listeners want. I wonder how Carrie Underwood would have done if she came out NOW. I actually don't miss the fact that I do not have a radio in my car because I don't think I would like what they play right now. When I drive my husbands car I put it on. In a 5 1/2 drive to Columbus I hear the same 20 songs over and over again on multiple stations. A lot of them sound exactly the same and don't impress me at all.
