American Idol: Season 10 PART III

And you know what they say about opinions. :rolleyes1 Which I can't repeat on the DIS but it amounts to opinions are like (fill in the blank), everyone has one.

That's what I was saying. :thumbsup2 I didn't want to use that particular phrasing for the reasons you pointed out.

Actually, I think that is exactly what Jennasis is saying...opinions, everyone's got one. Doesn't make it right or wrong, it is just what we each think. Just because J-Lo or Randy thinks someone was good or not good enough doesn't make them OK or not OK to me.

You may love the way Brittany Spears sounds. I may hate it. It is OUR opinion and our likes or dislikes.

It is the great thing about life, having choice. :)

Everyone on a message board just shares their thoughts and opinions. It is what we do here on the DIS and we're pretty darned good at it!:flower3:

Yup.

Well, some opinions SHOULD matter, more than others. Otherwise, there would be no need for experts in any field. But, this is reality TV..all about drama and ratings.

Seriously, someone dialing in 2800 vs. 8...means what? :confused3 Haley and James clearly have the most iTunes downloads, which translates into $$$$.

(I think, I just reminded myself, why I became bored with AI, after Taylor Hicks won.;))

The only opinion that matters to me is mine. I may read other opinions, take them into consideration IF they are presented in such a way as to take them seriously...and then I form MY opinion. When it comes to music and what I LIKE no one is going to sway my opinion. It is what it is and hasn't changed a heck of a lot in the last 30 some odd years.

I love how "opinions" from experts are so easily discarded by the masses. If a professional musician/singer voices their opinion on certain contestants, I will definitely give more weight to that than I would to an opinion from someone walking down the street.

Just as if you were in a doctor's office. If a doctor practicing for 40 years thinks you need an MRI to check something out and a new doctor who just got there thinks you just need sleep. They are both opinions, you can't be sure who is right. But I bet damn sure you're going to go along with the 40 year practicing doc.

Opinions on artistic matters are worlds different than a medical opinion. The two can't be compared. I know the types of music that I like and the opinion of an expert does not influence me at all. Medical advice is built upon volumes of medical education that is more cut and dried.

At least the opinions from the experts on the show agreed that Hayley was not as great as some of the bloggers thought. That is what all of the outcry about the judges being unfair to poor little Hayley was about. Since the show judges were being paid to give their opinions that probably makes their feedback better than "expert" opinions from friends of random internet posters. That is if you believe experts' opinions should determine what kind of music that you should like. I don't.

Absolutely.

Experience and expertise are two completely different things.

Music is a preference. There are different tastes, like with food. Food experts can give you their criteria but your tongue, with food, is the last word, just like with music your ear and your taste is YOUR last word.

Experts can take apart the particulars and make decisions based on exact musical criteria, but it doesn't make anyone LIKE it. There are rights and wrongs in music but WRONG has made millions of dollars and RIGHT is saved for those with gourmet palates. Movies, books and most fine arts fall into the same categories.

I was trained how to watch a movie in college...it RUINED the entire movie experience. Truthfully not many movies are made perfectly, so expecting it to be so can ruin the entertainment quality. Music is the same.

Take movies for example. If Roger Ebert tells me a movie is a piece of trash, I definitely am NOT going to the movies to see it. He has a good eye and has been around a long time, so I will trust his judgment. You could say the same thing with musical evaluators. They obviously have been in the business and have an idea of what is good and what is not.

Sure you can like a singer than stinks the same as you can like a movie that is god awful. Nobody is saying you can't.

I have never NOT seen a movie or listened/bought music because someone else told me they were lousy. I have gone to movies that critics rave over and have come out of them thinking it was the worst piece of garbage I ever saw and WTH were the critics smoking when they saw it.

Personal taste is always a factor, but I also listen to an expert opinion.

It depends on the critic. If they have proven themselves to be expert in the field I'll consider their critique. If they gave the job to the sports guy because they didn't HAVE a movie critic...:sad2:

I will listen to a professional's critique on music when it comes to technique. When it comes to whether or not it is appealing, nobody else's opinion matters.

yep, tell me about technique and I'll listen, but I know my own mind on what I like or don't like and I don't let anyone tell me what I should listen to or what I should see. I don't even watch or read any reviews anymore because they annoyed me more than anything.

Of course I don't really go to movies anymore since I think most of them are not worth the money so maybe I should just shut up and not have an opinion on this one. :lmao:

Well said! :thumbsup2 Totally agree! ::yes::

Who are the experts on the show you are referring to? The judges? Jimmy Iovine? I don't recall anyone saying that. The judges didn't like particular song choices for her and how she did in parts of them, but they also said that about the others from time to time. There were many times when they raved about her singing. I just don't remember them saying she wasn't as great as some of the bloggers thought. :confused3

Yeah, me either. Are you talking about the one time Randy didn't like her song? JLO critisized Lauren so many times that Lauren started crying finally.
Tyler didn't make an original comment the whole season, lol, but he sure entertained us!! Jimmy had lots of hits and misses with everyone. So-who are the 'experts'? There's all this inuendo and all these little clues but not one single fact has come forward as to why we should all hate Haley OR admit we're crazy, lol!!! Methinks they doth protest too much. No matter.

The other thing that really gets me on this thread is all the people who are wandering around talking to all these people, not on the DIS, to get their opinions too! I barely have time to drop in here once in a while much less spend time discussing this with my friends. We have reality to discuss. Seriously, are you guys making this(AI) one of your main conversation focuses? I have not discussed AI anywhere but her-not with my family, friends, grocery clerk-nada. It just doesn't seem germain to life.

I do have one friend who comes over to watch with me on Wednesday nights, and we discuss it a little, but........I do sometimes feel kind of pathetic for discussing it on here so much! :rotfl2:

Absolutely, and I am stymied that some people can't seem to separate opinions of taste from technical merit. Music/art/film/dance...all the artistic endeavors are open to personal interpretation. I can name a myriad of famous paintings, stage-shows, films, music that were/are considered "masterpieces" that I thought weren't so great or downright ugly.

Maybe it makes me "unrefined" or in some cases ignorant of technical merit, but it's my opinion and I will stick to it and NEVER allow an "expert" (or random stranger on the internet) to tell me what I should or should not like or find beautiful.

Still, I can even appreciate the technical savvy of something I don't care for without actually liking the end product (opera, country music, some works of Shakespeare etc...).

Well, I can't say I wander around just talking to random people about Idol, but it does get talked about at work occasionally. We've been stuck in a windowless training room since March and we will talk about Idol and other shows on breaks, lunches or just during some down time. We talk about a lot of things.

I've also talked to my sister about it since we both watch it.

I have a feeling Itunes is a strong parameter of how they make their choices. :confused3
As well it should be.

Thanks.... that's interesting..... but.... Here's their number of followers for some of them on twitter as of a few minutes ago.
So people who listen to and buy music favor Haley; people who utilize free social networking tools online favor Scotty. Noted.

There is a difference in who is willing to follow someone for free and who is willing to put out cash.
Ayup.

IMO, the only thing that determines an artist's post idol success (and this applies to artists not on Idol as well) is the quality of the music they put out. Period.
I'm sure that not even you believe that, as stated.

Anyway....I guess what I'm saying is that if your music stinks, nobody is going to buy it period.
That one makes sense.

On the flip side, you don't have to be a great singer to be successful, you just have to have great music. It's all about the music.
No; there is so much more to it.

This is the reason that Idol doesn't always (or often) work in producing great musical artists.
I agree that the voting is not structured well to produce successful recording stars, which is its stated purpose.

It would be interesting to have an itunes idol. Each week, the contestants record something and the songs are put on itunes. The contestants with the most songs sold continue and the one with the least gets booted. Probably a much better indicator of who will be successful. You wouldn't often get someone buying a few thousand copies of a single, but who knows.

I'm saying this with humor. You said you barely have time to drop in here. You have 14,000 posts! You are talking to someone. Again, no harm intended. I'm just amazed at the amount.

Uh, did you notice her join date...August 1999? Just a little perspective...
