American Idol Season 10: Official Thread!!

He has a contract for just this season and can opt out of future seasons if he wants.
My understanding is that he has a contract for more than just this season, but can opt out of future seasons if he wants. The difference is significant, I think, because it shows that the producers are making more of a commitment to Tyler than they had made to Dioguardi, for example. I suspect they made a similar deal with Lopez, essentially guaranteeing them a spot on the panel (or at least the money for that) for a number of years, if they (Tyler, Lopez) want it.

Ok, the "Simon being mean" thing just bugs me, he wasn't mean, he was HONEST. In the long run he did more for these people then the "nice" judges. I look at the kids that come to audition that are just AWFUL, but their families think they are just the best thing ever. Simon is just telling them like it is. Again, there are a lot of good singers on the show, but most of them are NOT star quality.

So if I walk up to an overweight person and tell them "Put down the fork fatty", that isn't mean...it's just honest?

Don't get me wrong, I LOVED Simon, but he was definitely mean. You can be honest without being mean....or even blunt, BUT that was Simon's "schtick", and it worked for him, and I even enjoyed it.

Sometimes I think you just like the "sound" of your own voice, as it were.

You just reiterated what I said. He can opt out of future seasons if he wants. I don't know where you got your understanding from, but my understanding came from Tyler himself in his Stern interview on Wednesday.

I'm sorry Jenn, but my read of your message is that his contract was for just this season. That's what I was responding to.

I heard what I heard from one of the television blogs... if you heard from Tyler's mouth, itself, that the contract is really just for one season, then I'd believe that. I'll try to do more research and find out one way or the other.

EDITED: Here....
He was mum about any other details, but it sounds like FOX is confident in Tyler as a judge. "I have more than a one-year contract, but as you know things are what they are," says Tyler. "But I have more than a one-year contract."

That's also where I got the impression that this indicated that the producers were giving Tyler more than they gave Dioguardi.

If the person were on the Biggest Loser's show, fine. These contestants are on the show specifically to get a recording contract-it isn't like they are just hanging out at the mall and someone is walking up to them and telling them they are awful singers. There is a huge difference between unsolicited advice and being a contestant on Idol.

Even the contestants know better. They listen to the other judges and then they all take a deep breath before they turn to Simon. Watch their faces. Simon's opinion meant more to them then the other 3 combined.

I think "mean" is the wrong word. Cowell is abrasive. I think there's a difference. "Meanness" requires intent to cause harm, imho, and I don't think that was really what was underlying the comments made by Cowell that some folks here apparently are calling "mean".

What about Cowell telling that kid he looked like a Bush Baby? I thought is was funny AND true, but still mean.

Holy crow! Was it the word "just" in my other post? I suffer from fat-finger and fast-finger syndrome. I type fast and furiously, and often my brain is thinking several things at once. I was in the middle of wording my post one way and then switched it to another, but never deleted the piece of the first wording. It happens a lot to me, as well as reversed spelling (You will often see my posts with "hte" instead of "the" or with an extra letter like "letyter" because my fingers hit a letter next to the one I wanted.). Sometimes I catch them and sometimes I don't.

My original intent was "he has a contract for just this season and any subsequent seasons that he can opt out of at any time." But it sounded stupid to me...like he could up and leave THIS season. So I went back and changed it, but apparenlty it still sounded stupid (or at least misleading).

Steven Tyler has a contract that allows him to do THIS season and quit, or continue on further if he wants to. He did not make any mention of how long he could continue on for or if the producers HAD to keep him on if they decided they didn't like him.

Dunno, but if it was just a little confusion that should be good news, right?

:thumbsup2

From what little I've seen of the judging panel in action, I really like what Tyler brings to the table.

So far, I hope if Steven has the option to continue on for another season, that he does it...however, as much as I love him on the show, I love him in Aerosmith MORE...so if it came down to it ( and no one is saying it will, but if....) I would rather he go back to his band. That being said, I think I would find it harder to replace Steven than it was Kara, Paula AND Simon! The guy brings a wild, fun, entertaining and honest quality to the show , even tho he is playing it fairly safe right now I am hopeful he really gets past the surface judging. I also think the chemistry of the judges is great...more so Randy/Steven...my jury is still out on JLo. It is still early and I am hopeful she stays out of Diva mode or worse yet..mother Hen mode.

Can't wait until Wednesday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Looking forward to seeing a girl from our HS...:cheer2:

So far I've only seen one audition that I feel indicates a strong chance of being a successful recording artist. Now, I can't say whether that is more or less than past years - it is really hard to pick out the winner this early in the contest, of course, and even harder to determine whether the winner is going to be a successful recording artist - but I can't help being concerned.

I can't remember the name of the woman who I'm referring to... she was a brunette who auditioned in New Orleans. I there a spot where all 36 contestants who are going through to Hollywood are shown, with their names and perhaps small bios?

Check with Mandy, I think she posted a page or so back about having a spoiler for the top 40 if anyone is interested in knowing in advance.
