We are invited to a friend's daughters 9th bday. Right now she is into her American girl doll. It is a "look-a-like" type...can you tell I have a son. She got it for Christmas, and doesn't have too much for it. The clothes, accessories are quite expensive and mostly have to be ordered on line as far as I can tell. I only want to spend around $25. Does anyone have a gift idea that may not be truly American girl. Her mom found a local craft store where a lady makes clothes that fit the dolls, but she already picked an outfit and another mother said she probably would too. Plus I know she is getting an equestrian outfit and horse. Any help is greatly appreciated !!

American Girl has an entire line of books. They can be found at Borders, Barnes & Noble, etc. I would ask her mom what books she would like. There are books about specific dolls, hair care books, hygiene books, all kinds.

When my DD was 9yo, she loved the Amelia series by American Girl. I think we got every one of those books.

are there any dolls that are British? Are friends are... (I realize they are American girl dolls, but one that had a British backround, maybe one from the colonial times?)

Target carries a line of 18 inch doll furniture and outfits. I have seen several items in the 25.00 range.

Check out Target...they have some dolls that are the same size as AG dolls. They had a salon chair, table and chair set, horse, and bed if I remember right.

The craft store Michael's has some outfits for 18 in dolls, I cant recall what they are called. My DD has a couple of them and they are very cute, and fit well. Also, try Ebay. There are TONS of sellers that make clothes for 18 in dolls (fit AG). I have bought several off there and they have all been very cute. The AG stuff is pretty pricey...but occasionally if you check the clearance or sale page on the website they will have a few things marked down.

Good luck!

She is the perfect age for the American Girl Magazine. You can order it online and she'll get this gift all year long. My daughter has been getting this for at least 3 yrs and she is 12 now.

Definitely check out Target for the "Our Generation" doll accessories. You'll find lots of stuff for around $25, like a spa cart, scooter, salon chair, sleepover party kit, vanity with stool, bathtub and accessories, etc.

My sister inlaw purchased an AG doll for my niece for Christmas, then got the Target furniture and accessories, and found some doll clothing online that is custom made to match Gymboree clothing. If you're interested in where she got the clothing, you can send me a message and I'll give you the link :)

There are also American Girl craft sets. My DD loves them! There is a t-shirt decorating book that comes with a 3-pack of t-shirts (pink, purple, blue) for girls to decorate (comes with a book and "stuff"; we've used other ribbons/craft supplies also). And a book of purses; one of "crafts"; hair-dos. All of these are maybe $19.99; I've gotten them on sale though. I know Michaels has them as does Learning Express. They are "real" American Girl brand.

In addition to AG books, there are puzzle sets, mazes, "pencil play" (word games/crosswords/etc) - I've gotten good sales on these from AG website, and am pretty sure they sell such at Learning Express, Barnes & Noble, etc.

Also, the Disney Doll dresses they sell at the parks fit AG dolls. My DD's AG dolls and Disney Doll share - she has Cinderella, Minnie, Jasmine, Belle, Ariel

My DD 7 and 5 and I just watched the AMG DVD's. I was very impressed and my girls loved them. We watched Chrissa, Samantha, Molly, and Kit. We rented from the library. But I know Target has some. DD5 turns 6 next month and wants the DVD's. Just another option. Also, check the sale link at AGD.com they have outfits for $7!! I just ordered them for my girls too.

In the sale section of the AG website there are always some good deals. Right now they have various books from $2-$7.

And I agree with the Target things, they have some adorable accessories.

Michael's has croc like shoes that are cute - make sure they are 18 in size. Target brand is great and the books are a great idea too.

I have bought some adorable outfits from ebay. The seller makes the clothes to look like the real ones. Last year I got dd several pairs of pjs for her dolls and spent like $12 for each and the lady bundled shipping. Feel free to pm me for the seller's name if you are interested.

Also AG makes miniatures of the historical dolls. I have found this in Borders, and Books-a-million. It would be kind of like her doll has a doll to play with. The miniatures are $22 or $23.
