Amazon, WII or others Question

I have a question. I just got a WII from amazon for $249. With the $8 shipping it came to $257. No tax.
When will they hit me with the tax or do I have to claim it somewhere? I have never bought anything online without being charged tax so I am not sure if the tax man will get me if I keep my mouth shut.

Most states have a use tax that requires you to pay sales tax if you are not charged sales tax in another state. In some states it is on your annual tax return form and in some states there is a separate form. That said, probably 99.9% of the use tax is never reported/paid as there is little way to track these sales and it is not really worth the cost of enforcement.

When I used to work somewhere that shipped, from what I told was that we didn't charge tax if the item was shipped to a state that did not have one of our stores. Like if we shipped to HI (no store there), then the person did not pay sales tax.

Legally, you are suppose to report the purchase when your file income taxes and pay the 6% sales tax. As others mentioned, I haven't really heard of much enforcement of this by any states. Here's what CT's tax department says:

7. What if I buy taxable goods or services from an out-of-state mail-order company, television shopping channel, or computerized shopping service and the vendor does not charge Connecticut tax?

If you buy goods or services for use in Connecticut, you owe and must remit use tax on those purchases. You report the use tax liability for purchases you made during the preceding calendar year either on your Connecticut income tax return or Form OP-186.
