I thought I had read this on this board a week or two ago can't find it on Amazon's site nor on this board, doesn't anyone know if maybe I'm lost my mind....:rotfl:

I thought this time of year I would sign up and cancel in a month or two.

I just signed up with my student account and I get it for $39 a year. If you are a student I would recommend that because I think the regular price is $79 a year.

I seem to remember reading that somewhere as well but can not find it now. I think it was suppose to be $7.99/month.

I used this link yesterday to sign up for a 1month free Prime trial (right hand side). It should get me through the holiday buying season.

Just don't forget to cancel :)

ITA! If you are eligible for a student account, get it! It is so worth the $39 a year! We use it to order all kinds of things. Just think about how much you would save on gas by not having to go to the store. Plus, I don't know where you live, but here in Northern Virginia the stores are so packed that I cannot stand to go into them. The streaming videos are an added bonus too.

If you go to Amazon.com and scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page, under "Let Us Help You" is a link to Amazon Prime.

I've been a member for several years, paying $79/year for the service. I also do a fair amount of purchasing on Amazon and it's nice to not have to pay for 2 day shipping - that alone makes it worth my while. However, the other perks (free movies, borrowing some Kindle books) has added to the value.

If you do more than 5-10 transactions/year with Amazon, I think it's well worth it. For 2-3 day shipping, you can quickly make up the $80 difference in just a few orders.

You need to check the rules for student prime accounts.

You do NOT get access to Prime instant videos.

It says in the 6 month trial period you get "certain Prime benefits" but after the 6 months, as long s you don't cancel, you get full benefits excluding sharing free shipping with household members. I just brought up using my student email to sign up for it but my husband wants to keep his for sharing the free shipping.

Initially student prime is free for 6 months. After that is $39 per year. Once you start paying, you can get prime instant video and borrowing library.

One thing you cannot do with student prime (free or paid) is share your prime benefit with other members of your household.

If you are thinking on joining student prime, the best way to do it is to first sign up for a regular prime trial. Then add the amazon accounts of other members of your household, and then switch to student prime.

Not really a problem since you can ship to any recipient at any address. Also, the $39/year is good for 4 years. After that it switches back to $89 a year. Bummer since it is probably going to take me 10 years to complete my current degree. ;)

Well, the problem in our home is I buy things for DH and he buys for me off Amazon. If we shared the same account we would see what the other is looking at as it always shows the last things you looked up and related items on the main screen.

And good luck with your degree! I know the felling!

Ya, I guess that could be a problem :) DW and I share an account, but I never noticed if she was looking at something for me. Maybe it's the Clueless Guy Syndrome (CGS)! :rotfl2:

Actually, my problem is getting DW to actually use Amazon. I will come home and she will say "we need ..." My first response is always "Did you check Amazon?" We pay for the thing (granted it's half price), use it!

Also, thank you for the words of encouragement! My last degree (MS) I sprinted through. For this one (PhD), I'm pacing myself.

I just started my free month but don't think I'll keep it. I was looking forward to being able to borrow kindle books but didn't realize that I have to own a "Kindle" and not just have Kindle app on my device.

My son has a student prime account and my dd is streaming Dr. Who right next to me. She has watched multiple seasons already using his Prime account.

I should have been clearer. For the initial free period, you get free 2 day shipping, no streaming. After the initial free period ends and you start paying $39, you then start getting free streaming, for a maximum period of 4 years. After that, you are automatically converted to a regular prime membership.

Streaming can that be done on the iPad thru the Kindle or Amazon App? If i had an actual Kindle would I need wi-fi to stream or does it run on whisper sync?
