Am I nuts for wanting to spend $900.00 on DS's 1st Communion Party?**UPDATE POST 87*

DS is making his 1st Holy Communion in 2 months.

DH , myself and the kids are currently living with my mom and her BF while our house is being built. Having the party here is not an option. Our house won't be done until August so we can't wait until that is done.

DS's birthday is the week before his communion. He doesn't want a kid party and I'm not having a family party due to the timing. So I thought maybe having his 1st Communion party at Dave and Busters might be good. DS wouldn't feel shafted and everyone would have fun. Only thing for 38 people its coming up to almost $900.00.

I've called alot of other places and they're either booked or coming out to almost the same amount. Big Communion parties are a thing around here, so actually 38 people is fairly a small group in local standards.

I don't think you're nuts! If it's important to you, why not celebrate? For 38 people I think $900 is a pretty good price. I think my parents spent about the same for a rehearsal dinner for my brother's wedding.

The room, a buffet with a hot entree, pasta, vegetable, salad, rolls and butter, soft drinks, coffee, tea etc, 4 kids meals, a cake and of course tax and gratuity which is a whopping $150.00 alone.

Hey! I know exactly what you are saying! I have the same problem! My son makes His communion May 6th,2007. I just went and purchased his suit today! I still have to get shoes and a dress shirt and a tie! We have an upcoming trip to the world from April 3rd to the 11th! Then only three weeks until the communion! So I decided I wanted to get it done now! I'm tossing up a party in my yard catered or at a restaurant 2 of the places I really wanted were booked already! I have about 4 other options! I'm still waiting on 2 to call me back! But I will have apprx anywhere from 70-100 people and most are family! Crazy so I will be spending about that! We are doing a luncheon! I figured it wouldnt be much cheaper at home so why not have it somewhere and let them clean up! That is a lil pricy for 38 people! but if thats what you want and you can fit it in the budget than go for it! You only make your communion once! And how many special event does one have in their entire life!? So like I said if you can fit it in the budget go for it!!

Is the $150 on top of the $900? If not, it doesn't sound too unreasonable for what you're getting.. Have you ever eaten there before? Is the food good?

You only make your communion once! And how many special event does one have in their entire life!? So like I said if you can fit it in the budget go for it!!

It sounds like she has no other options because of where she's living (otherwise I would probably suggest something at home for that number of people) so I agree.. If it's in the budget, why not?

True, I see that and it sounds good to me. But there may also be other restaurants that offer things like what I am going to most likely do and it would be a good amount cheaper. But like I said previously whatever you decide is right for you . Most places around here are $20-$25 per head . That is why I am doing a luncheon. The proce is basically half of the $25. Dave N Busters is more of a fun place so the kids are sure to enjoy! Have fun whatever you decide!!

Well, this may get me in a heap of trouble, but I wouldn't do it. I just don't agree with elaborate parties for every event in your life.

I think a First Communion should be a spiritual event and not an excuse for a big elaborate party. I would think that the reason for the party is going to get "lost in the shuffle" so to speak.

No its $900.00 total including the room. Yep, the food is good. We had my Aunts 90th birthday party there last year. (her request so the kids could have fun)

wow - here I am trying to figure out where to have DS's rehearsal dinner and I'm wincing at the $1000 for 20 people.

1st Communion around here is no biggie, so we don't do big parties.

Good luck trying to figure this out.

Dave & Buster's is a great idea, and $900, including tip, for 39 people?!?! I couldn't do it at home for that cheap!! IMO, that's a steal, and think, you don't even have to clean up after the festivities!

I think that's a good deal. We do big parties around here for First Communion. I had about 75 people for our first's First Communion and the meaning of the day was not lost because we had a party. In fact, he is my most "holy" kid and follows the most. Have a great time, it is a special day.

Thats not a bad price! People start booking all the places a year in advance for communions here, and they have them in wedding halls, restaurants, party rooms etc, its a big deal around here and they pay way more than the 900.00 for the party.

I wouldn't do it....but if you've got the money & this is what you want to do, then I say, "Plan the party & have a great time!"

I don't think that is so bad. I'm having a family party at my own house for my son's First Communion in May and its costing around $500.

So if you have the money, I suppose it is fine.

Personally, I wouldn't, but like someone else said, I'm pretty frugal.

I'd probably just take immediate family and grandparents out to eat at a restaurant after communion, if it were me.

But, if it's important to you, and you have the money, then spend it how it makes you happy.
