Hi, just hoped to get some feedback on flying Allegiant into the Sanford airport.

I've never flown on Allegiant. The rates are awesome but I don't know anything about their reliability, etc.

Specifically looking at flying out of Concord (Charlotte), NC. The flight times kind of stink (like 9 pm), but the RT fare is like $100 pp!

Also, how do you get from Sanford to WDW? How easy is this to do? Cost? And how long does it take to get from the Sanford airport to WDW?

Thanks!

The Sanford Airport is an hour away from WDW with no traffic (which is rare, as you would need to take I-4 through downtown and the traffic is unpredictable and usually bad). There's no Disney transportation, so you would need to rent a car or use a Cab/Uber etc. I would say, unless you are planning on renting a car, those tickets would need to be a few hundred dollars cheaper to make it worth the extra travel and cost of transportation.

Remember you get what you paid for.

My sister just flew them to Tampa and ended up with her flight out being delayed 6 hours and her return flight being canceled with no explanation.

We flew to Sanford with no problems, no delays in June; We planned on renting a car anyway (and best rate turned out to be bundling with the airfare). Tolls are around $7.50-8.00 each way (make sure you have change) if you choose that route (we found it easier and faster than I-4 with the construction). We flew in on a Monday afternoon and didn't encounter any traffic problems (?lucky maybe?) and it was end of rush hour timeframe. It is about 45 min-hour.

Also be aware of checked bag fees and that the weight limit is 40 pounds for a checked bag (50 pounds is normal for Southwest Airlines).

Even with a rental and checking 3 bags we saved several hundred dollars flying allegiant from our local airport. Our favorite airline (and generally the next cheapest) is Southwest airlines but the closest airport is 3 hours away (so add drive/gas time to trip).

Savings obviously will vary-if you only have a couple people to buy air tickets for it's easy to dismiss the savings--but-$100+/pp for 5 people adds up very quickly.

Oh and the airport is much much smaller and picking up the rental car was much closer and quicker than MCO.

Go was not sure our first trip, the distance and smaller airport. But, now it's the way we fly all the time. I've had tickets $37,$57 before taxes using the flexible travel day feature. I rent a car, I do from MCO too. Rode ME once when the guys picked up the car. We have had some medical and dental emergencies so a car was needed.

The drive isn't bad, allow half hour each way, there are a few tolls, didn't bother me. When I was flying for $300 instead of $300 each! They are a direct flight, no frills, you prepay your baggage, back pack is free. No free drinks, not a biggie ask for a glass of water or buy one at the airport.

We never had a flight cancell, but our one trip back we held for a plane that just emptied as the one we were to fly was having something small world on. It was just easier for them to have us switch planes. I know this past winter there was a plane from Sanford couldn't get back, so the one going down was cancelled. They flew the next day. But, it was the same with the United and Delta flight, weather related.

Allegiant offers a flight to SFB from Toledo (OH), not too far from me. I assume the fare is very competitive with what's normally on offer from Detroit Metro. But as with Spirit, it is a risky proposition: there is exactly one flight per day, and on only a few days per week. If your flight doesn't go for any reason, you are up the river. If you are okay with this possibility as well as the ultra-no-frills character of the airline, you can probably save some serious money.

Check all the various fees...

* Seat Selection at time of booking (important to some folks): $0 to $80
* Credit Card Fee: 3.2% not to exceed $8
* Priority Access (board the plane first): $4-$12
* Checked bags (depending on time of payment): $20-$50 (again, only a 40# limit, overweight is another $50)
* Carry on Bag: $10-$75 (something that fits under the seat in front of you is free)

The other option is to take a shuttle. My sister flew into Sanford on Allegiant and they arranged for a transfer to WDW directly through Allegiant. I believe it was a Mears shuttle that picked them up.

You CAN get to WDW without putting one wheel on I4. SR417 will take you there for around $8.00 in tolls (may be less but the tolls did go up not to long ago)Many here prefer it to I4.

A rental is usually the most cost effective transportation. National/Alamo is on site. Budget is off site (or was, may have changed) not sure about the others, those were all I ever used out of Sanford.

All car rental agencies are on site a SFB and are quite literally right across the street from the baggage claim area (maybe a minute walk).
Airport is nice and small, easy to get around and in/out of.
SR417 is the nice civilized road to take to WDW and the tolls were about $5-$6 last time we used SFB.
If your feeling adventurous, just take Lake Mary Blvd out through Sanford to I-4 and then I-4 west for 40 miles (watch for the Disney exit you need)

As far as Allegiantair goes, we have used them many times and they can be a great low cost option as long as you use them correctly.

***NOTE: If you are the type that must have a certain seat, be the first onto the plane, must have your free soda/snack, pack everything (and the kitchen sink) and have no flexibility in your travel days. Then Allegiant IS NOT for you!

My advice for Allegiant is:
1) being flexible with you travel days can save you quite a bit of money. Most vacationers want to leave Friday night or Saturday morning and return Sunday evening to get the most vacation time for there buck. The mid week flight days are almost always considerably cheaper, if you have the flexibility with you vacation to travel off the peak days you will save $$$
2) pack light and very carefully, DW and I will quite often share 1 checked bag (or Just take 2 carry-ons) for a 1 week trip and our 2 small backpacks as personal items (no carry-ons). Do you really need that third (and fourth) pair of shoes? Plan to have a quiet day around the resort and do a load of laundry, this way you will only have to pack enough clothes for half your trip.
3) wear you heaviest/bulkiest items on the plane (ie shoes, jacket, hoodie, jeans etc). It's usually cool on the plane anyway and a rolled up hoodie or jacket can be used as a pillow if you have a window seat or a willing partner you can lean against.
4) the earlier you arrive at the airport, the better chance you have of getting seated together. The last minute arrivals are usually the ones trying to talk people into switching seats around so they can sit together (because they didn't purchase seats and arrived late)
5) if you really have to book seats, the ones at the back of the plane are cheaper $12/seat, the front seats will cost you $25+ per seat. Allegiant boards the plane rear to front so if you have a seat near the back, overhead bin space will still be available.
6) don't bother with priority boarding, it's a waste of money since carry-ons are charged now, overhead bin space is really not an issue anymore.
7) most Allegiant flights are 3 hours or less so we typically don't need a drink or snack. You can pick up a bottle of soda or water once you are through security to take on the plane will cost you $3-$5, we don't usually bother. If you really gotta have a drink during your flight, you can buy a can of pop or a tea/coffee or snack on-board for $2-3.
8) there is no in-flight entertainment system. Put some music/movies/books on your tablet or phone or just take a book.

I agree... the fees quickly add up to a regular airline. I hate paying baggage roulette. Over estimate, no refunds. Under estimate and you pay double for that checked bag. Don't forget those fees are DOUBLE for that return flight. The limited number of planes when there is a mechanical breakdown can really ruin a trip.

We've priced Allegient from Lexington and the primary cost difference for us is transportation once in Orlando. Rental cars at Sanford are much more expensive than MCO, negating any price savings from the flight itself. We make the hour drive to Louisville, take Southwest with no extra fees, and fly into MCO.

I have flown Allegiant many many times and have never had any issues with flights being delayed. Yes, there are extra fees and I always add everything up when deciding if its a good deal or not. It is a "no frills" airline, but what airline isn't these days? I love that the flights are direct!

I have used a car service and have also rented a car, just depends on how many people and how many days you will be there. If you are there for a week or so I would look at rates for 1 way rentals. I have done this twice with Dollar (one time I got a $9 rate) and returned the car to the Wyndham in DTD. Yes, it is kind of a pain but totally worth to save some money if that's an issue. As someone stated earlier, the airport is so much smaller than MCO, it literally takes about 5 minutes to get through security.

The main thing is to make sure you have all fees factored in when you are comparing to a flight into MCO.
