All resort non-smoking

And vice versa. It's OUTSIDE. So, if i have a 1st floor room, I can step off of the patio and smoke on the grass 1 inch from the patio, true? I'm not in the room and I'm not on the patio/balcony. If your answer is no, then I would assume I can't smoke in the parking lot either?

I just didn't think Disney wouldn't do a better job considering all of its guests.

And 10 years ago, when I joined, I didn't really envision the Mob-mentality, morality Nanny Police State overtaking America.

If I were to be perfectly truthful about this whole smoking thing, I'd have to confess to being on your side. I don't smoke (nor do you) but I do have smokers who accompany me on DVC trips (as do you). Now I don't and never have had a problem with people smoking on balconies and patios because 90% of the time I've ever been on my balcony or patio, there has been nobody else in sight.

So if you and I were writing this policy, balconies and patios would probably be designated smoking areas. But we had nothing to say about it. It's Disney's ball and they make the rules. The problem I have is the folks who have decided just because they don't like the rules, they will not abide by them. Sorry, that's just wrong in my book.

Anarchy is not good, and we can't just pick and choose which DVC policies we are willing to follow. I will be sending my smoking SIL to the designated smoking area even though I see nothing wrong with smoking on balconies. Sorry if the over-the-top enthusiasm from many non-smokers seems like a slam to smokers. It really shouldn't come off that way.

I have read this thread off an on for the last 24 hours. I just have to ask a question to those posters who insist that they will continue to smoke in their rooms. Like many other people, I have two children who react very badly to smoke - as do my husband and I. Obviously we request non-smoking rooms. We do this because we don't want to spend the vacation treating breathing and coughing difficulties in our kids - we want to have a great vacation. I understand you feel "jipped" or like you got the rug pulled out from under you because you bought into this assuming there would be smoking rooms. (Yes, I have read the posts - I know it was never promised in contracts, etc.) I have no doubt that in the traditional Disney way there will be very nice, clean designated smoking areas close to the area. I realize that may be an added pain - especially if its cold, raining, etc. But - and here is my question - on behalf of the kids and/or adults who really, honestly, can not be around smoke - either through the vents or from the balcony - can you please respect the rule Disney has asked us to abide by? I try really hard to teach our kids to be respectful of other guests. They aren't allowed to run in the halls or be loud late at night. I don't want them to disrupt someone else's vacation. I'm simply asking for the same respect in return.

Well said jejojual. I'm surprised by the selfishness of some people on this thread. We didn't make the rules, we didn't ask for the change (unless you count that we request non-smoking rooms), I think it's obnoxious that these people don't have the decency to think about others that will be in the room after them.

Heck a bunch of people have said they smoke but in their own homes. Why should this be any different? I won't stink up my own home, but I will stink up my resort room? Makes no sense.

It's sad that somebody is so dependant on a product that they are letting it take over their life, their vacation and their sense of right and wrong. By a poster saying that they will continue to smoke in their room regardless of the fine floors me.

It's a touchy subject (obviously). I have always requested non-smoking and received non-smoking. I haven't had issues with people smoking on their balconys. We sometimes rent a room for my MIL when we go. I always request a smoking room for her. While she can decide in the future if she wants to join us, I'm sure that this change will not make her happy. If she decides not to go with us, that's her choice...it will sad that her addiction has stopped her from enjoying a "free" vacation.

For those of you who are jumping up and down in glee about Disney prohibiting smoking everywhere in the DVC properties, the next thing Disney may prohibit could be something dear to your heart, like alcohol or perfume, or even your special coffeemaker from home (potential fire hazard).

You are correct, sir. I did not ask my salesperson if these things were in my contract guaranteeing them for the life of said contract. So if the day comes when I have to give them, I'll remember that you told me so.

These were the two best posts on this thread. I too suffer from allergy induced asthma and another lung condition that requires me to use oxygen at night. I have been known to sleep in the car when a "non-smoking" room at a hotel was smoked in before I arrived. It was either that or spend the night and a lot of money in the emergency room. I don't know how some of you can be so cavalier about purposfully breaking the non-smoking rule! What makes your habit more important than my life???

There is a way for Disney to police this without having to have the CM's or the other guests reporting it. There is a cost involved but honestly it is a small price to pay as far as I am concerned. They can install smoke detectors in the rooms and on the balconies to alert the front desk/manager of a guest smoking in a room or on a balcony just as a smoke alarm would alert them to a fire this would prevent or help to prevent the offending smokers and thus also allow them to administer teh cleaning fines appropriatley.

I believe that smoke detectors are already required in every room.

PLEASE -- it has nothing to do with morality -- I know plenty of people who live good moral lives -- and they smoke too.

This isn't a police State, it's Disney, and it's their resort. If you don't like the new rule, sell your points. Stay "onsite" at Bonnett Creek (if they allow smoking).

If Disney comes up with a rule that I don't agree with -- and if I'm very, very strongly against the new rule, I'll sell my points, and my life will go on.

Even if Disney changes the rule back, who's to stay the State of Florida won't ban it in theme parks, hotel rooms, etc.

As a DVC member, I will still be smoking in my room. I asked 3 coworkers, all smokers, and friends today (all 3 visit WDW yearly, although not all are DVC members). 2 of the three said that they will also continue to smoke and just pay whatever fine disney chooses to impose. I think non-smokers are naive to believe that this will ensure smoke free rooms. I believe it will just make all rooms smoking optional, as has been previously stated. Now I'll just factor a possible fine into the cost of my vacation. I sincerely hope that the fine will be used to properly clean the room, but I seriously doubt it.

Grab yourself an armload of pool towels if you need them, exceed the maximum stated occupancy limits if you need to, and bring back that refillable mug you bought 5 years ago. Rules are for chumps, right?

I hear Stormalong Bay is a great pool if you can sneak past the CMs to gain entry.

Hello all, I am a smoker (sad fact but fact) and I don't ever request a smoking room... I cannot stand the smell. I did however enjoy being able to smoke that morning cigi on the balcony . I don't have a problem with them making all rooms non smoking as it doesn't pretain to me (don't smoke in my own home or in my car) I do wish they had left a certain number of rooms maybe on the higher floors as Balcony smoking but this is not the case. I am thankful that they did not make the ENTIRE establishment non-smoking . So........ I will be one of those people wandering down in the early a.m in my Bunny slippers.. I hope THAT doesn't offend anyone
