I believe these are Tibetan/Buddhist Prayer Wheels. They are often found along trails/paths in the Himalaya mountains and other places in Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet etc.. Tradition is to run your hand along each one as you pass for purification and accumulating merit. I've seen these in mountaineering movies and in books about climbing Everest and other very high mountains.I wish I knew what these were!
