Alicante area advice?

Is anyone out there familiar with Alicante and anywhere up to about an hour's drive away?

M-i-l is looking at cheap flights to Alicante for a bit of spring sunshine, but doesn't know the area to judge good locations for accommodation. She'll have a car to get around a little, but wants to be able to walk to shops and restaurants without living on top of a nightclub! She'd like to be near the water, but not in a family beach resort.

Any suggestions for areas / resorts / specific accommodations (self-catering or hotel) that might fit the bill?

Calpe is a very nice area, not too touristy

Has she thought about flying to Murcia instead (about an hours drive from Alicante)? It's only about 30 minutes from La Manga and the strip which is really nice with plenty of shops and restaurants; nice weather too!

Alicante was chosen because of flight availability from local airports, but thanks for the suggestion!

Torrevieja is big and bustling but great in my opinion. It loads of rental properties available out of the main city centre in the urbanisations. My Mother in law lives there and can help with advice on places- PM me if you want some info as she knows most places round there.
