Alaska on July 19th, 2011 "Where a good tan is hard to find"
I know the amount of money needed for this trip is alot....we have the 2 cabins, on with a veranda of course; mine and DH's...boys have across the hall but inside cabin/no port hole...but they can use our veranda.....we are also going for 2 weeks but spending the time in Vancouver and Whistler...

So today was an interesting day....my boys High school went into a 2 hr lock down...all drapes pulled and many classes had the kids under the desks for the whole time. The police dept got a call from a teen from the next town over stating that there was going to be a shooting at Helix High school today...

I live on a hill and could see the police helicopter's and news helicopter's surrounding the school....they did make an arrest and the school was let out of lock down. One of my best friends works at the police station and her DH was the detective in charge....waiting for her to get back to me with the full scoop on what came out of the arrest....

There are over 2000 students at the school.....I spent the whole time texting my boys and their friends on what was going on...they gave me the inside info and I gave them the outside info....so many parents and students were texting me my phone was non stop.....

always helpful to have friends that are detectives in your police station :thumbsup2
Yeah it is a lot, but going to be a lot of awesome memories.

SCARY about the school!! Glad that everything is ok!

Tom please double check page #1 for the changed info...just to be sure I did it right;)

So I am getting ready to finish up my plans...buy the way if any of you have AAA...they will send you free travel books to Alaska....with all sorts of information....they sent me like 6 books and about 4 maps...and bunch of other fun stuff. Just tell them the ports that you will be in and also that you will be in Vancouver and they will also send you a guide/travel book for there.....and its free as long as you have AAA. :thumbsup2

Hi All!

I hope everyone had wonderful holidays and that this brand spankin' new year is treating you all right. I can hardly believe that we are a mere six months and four days from our Wonderful vacation.

We have definitely decided to drive up and as soon as my next escrow closes I will be able to cement reservations for everything involved. I bought an Alaska travel guide a couple of days ago to start getting an idea of what excursions might be available. I was intrigued by a land and air offering in Ketchican (and yes I know I butchered the spelling of that name :-). Has anyone else been to Alaska before and done an excursion like this and if so any advice, suggestions for who to book with or other info would be most appreciated.

My group is still very much in on the FE exchange and I will be able to update with cabin numbers hopefully soon. I haven't had a chance to peruse the thread yet so if there are any new players please let me know.

Have a wonderful long weekend everyone. And if you are anywhere near snow please make a snowman for me. As a native Southern Californian I am fascinated with the stuff but woefully inexperienced.

Take care all, help lots of people and have a "Wonder"ful day!

I'll make a snowman for you Tisza if you say hello to a palm tree for me :lmao::lmao:

Thanks for the info about AAA Robin. I completely forgot about it. I know their new publications come out in May, but if I wait that long it won't help with the excursions. I'll get right on it.

We're flying Cathay Pacific out of JFK to Vancouver. We're leaving about 10pm our time so we'll be flying through the night back and forth. I think we paid somewhere about $525 each round trip. It was almost cheaper than flying to Seattle. Then we would have to deal with transport from there and the boarder crossing.

We also decided to fly Cathay Pacific out of JFK. We are planning to fly out on Sunday the 17th. I am not thrilled about the overnight flying but you cannot beat the price for a non stop flight and I read they are installing TV's on their planes which my kids will love. I also believe it is 2 free pieces of luggage per person.

Yes, I just checked. It is 2 free bags per person. That is great!

Where do you live?

We are flying into Seattle from MSP because the flights to Vancouver were just too expensive and it gave us a good reason to check out Seattle.

We are in St. Paul, it will be my mom, sister, and I for a girls trip. We thought about Seattle, but in the end we decided to just bit the bullet and do Vancouver, we have the Fairmont Pacific Rim booked for 3 nights before the cruise.
Were flying on Delta also....for the 4 of us from Ca. it was as much and as many hrs to fly from San Diego as it was to fly from NY...unbelievable :confused3 we paid $1222.46 for the 4 of us to fly into Vancouver....

And as for the Dream...yup would love to be on that to :thumbsup2

We were going to do that but didnt want to hassle with it....we just want to get where we want to get ASAP and home when we are going and done. We decided it was worth the extra cash just to do that.
That was our big thing we didn't want the hassle of getting to and from and I think after 10 days of togetherness we will all want to get home without having to get to Seattle first.

Cool...we are in Farmington, used to live in Roseville (I actually still work there). What are your plans in Vancouver?

LOL :rotfl: I know what you mean about the "togetherness"...that ALWAYS concerns me when we go away...we are doing 13 days...I bet I will be SO happy to head back to work :rotfl2:

Hi All!

Well, today is a banner day... It is exactly 6-months practically to the minute when we will be preparing to board the Wonder for our long dreamt of Alaska cruise.

It is also about 6-months from the day when we will all meet in person, most for the very first time. Exciting stuff.

Hmmm... Let's see was there anything else that was important going on today? Oh yes, I remember they christened some other little boat in Florida today as well. Now if I could just remember what they called it... Maybe if I sleep on it it will come to me in my... Zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Take care all, help lots of people and have a "Wonder"ful day!

Thanks for the reminder! I can't believe it is only 6 months!!

Hi All!

Well I got a bit of a chuckle this morning when I noticed that according to my cruise countdown ticker I was only six months from our cruise yesterday and am now "five months, four weeks and one day” away as of today, thus putting me one additional day further away from my much anticipated vacation.

Who knew that today was a do over? And if it is, how cool is that? Yesterday was actually a pretty good if unremarkable day (save for a few notable events - christening party anyone?) so having the chance to redo it is welcome.

Now, if I log in tomorrow and see that the ticker says that we are six months, four weeks and two Days away from departure I will be significantly less amused and will commence hunting for Rod Serling.

Have a "Wonder"ful day all.

Does anyone know if the staff that was on the Wonder over in Florida relocated with the ship to the Mexican Riviera/Alaska?? Our daughters fell in love with Joni on the 4 night Wonder and I was wondering if we could try to get her in Alaska.

Have a great week!!

Thanks Robin & :woohoo: back at you for 31 years of marriage!!:worship:

Allen & I did decide on some excursions but of course they're not totally set in stone yet. Also we did not consider any of the pricy excursions so the personal tours, dog sledding, & flight seeing ones are out.

Skagway: Yukon Expedition

Juneau: One of the Mendenhall Glacier Combo tours (Rainforest or Tramway)
Also in Juneau I heard about a Crab Shack (definitely not fancy) that has wonderfal crab dishes, so we want to do that too.

Ketchikan: Lighthouse, Totems & Eagles.

Also if we have time we want to stroll around the town.

SO has anyone else decided what shore excursions they want to do?

Hopefully we will get what we want, but here is what we have selected:

Juneau - Disney Exclusive Glacier Dog Musher for a Day
Skagway - Liarsville Gold Rush Character Experience
Ketchikan - Bering Sea Crab Fishermans Tour

Wonder if things will fill up??

Congratulations Kim on the Packers heading to the SuperBowl! We watched both games yesterday. Two of my 3 sons like Football. The oldest twin likes the Steelers & the younger son likes the Packers. I like both teams so our family was pretty happy about the outcome of both games.

The SuperBowl should be exciting. Since I like both teams which one am I going to root for? :cheer2: Of course - the team who's wearing Yellow!
