Assuming that Disney will sail to Alaska in 2017, I was wondering if anyone has any insights into the best cabin, best side of ship, for a family of 5.... Anyone have any experiences or opinions?

I'll just say that you're going to get all opinions, from "Inside is best" (more money for excursions) to "I only travel Concierge". Most people's opinion is based on what they did. And choosing what works for you is really up to you.

I will also say, for a family of 5 (if it were mine), I'd be looking at either connecting oceanview rooms, or (depending on the kid's ages) an oceanview or verandah with an inside across the hall.

Since the cruise is a round trip cruise, what side really isn't that important, as what one side "sees" on the voyage out the other will see on the voyage in.

Our Alaska cruise was one of the very few times we have paid extra for a verandah, and it was worth every single penny. We sat out there for so many hours, and early morning watching the end of the world go by while having coffee was priceless.

Since the northbound and southbound parts of the cruise are different routes in some places, I believe you would have a slightly better visual experience on the starboard side. However, really the scenery is so spectacular I am pretty sure you'd be happy with either side.

we had a verandah on port side last july, and at tracy arm the captain did turn the ship around several times to allow passengers on both sides to get a view. having said that, it felt like the starboard side got a longer viewing time on that particular trip. don't know about other sailings.

still, can't go wrong with either.

We were on starboard side in verandah room 8508 (which is a stateroom for 5). I absolutely loved it. Because of the "daylight" hours (it literally was light out until past midnight and then the sun was back up at 4:30) when our kids were sleeping, I could go out on the balcony and enjoy the scenery. I loved this room because it is directly under the pop out deck area up on Deck 9, which means when/if it rained we were covered and never got wet, plus it seemed that we were always on the docking side of the ship....I think only one port we were not on the docking side. Alaska was our favorite cruise so far....we saw a lot of wild life from our balcony, many pictures of whales next to the ship....amazing. Cruising in the Caribbean is so different because you are in open ocean, and you don't get to see much....Alaska = about 20 hours of scenery. Take binoculars, we used ours a lot.

If it means the choice of not going to Alaska because of the cost difference of staterooms, then choose the lesser and still go, it is so worth it. We are from the desert, so this type of scenery is very much appreciated.

What month are you looking at? I found cabins to be too windy and cold when not in port. I prefer the Deck 2 Oceanview. The oversized windows was like a climate controlled balcony. When I want to be outside... just head to Deck 4 or the higher decks to get a 360 view of the scenery.

As mention... seriously consider two connecting cabins for the extra washroom. The verandah space should not count as a bedroom, nor a bathroom.
