Even though I never rented from Alamo (found to be pricey)when checking prices I read that if you prepay you can get an extra 10 percent off.The only thing wrong with that is if you find a lower rate you can't cancel.I have luck with Thrifty.(Dollar and Thrifty are partners)Always seem to have the best rates. You don't need to do anything but make a ressie and if you find a lower rate.....especially within Thrifty you cancel the old and take new.Have done it many times and just finally realized to become a Thrifty rewards member. They took my last 2 rentals (WDW trips) which equaled 16 rental days now I get 1 day free. Try it you will be pleased.
I always use which company is cheapest. For our last 4 trips, upcoming Jan. getaway and Sedona trips, for price it's Alamo by a mile. They always have great coupons and codes from BJ's or Costco that give us the addl driver free. check mousesavers.com for more codes & coupons too.
Now that you can check in with their kiosk at MCO it's great. In Nov. Dollar had a huge line and we were out the door in 5 mins with the kiosk.
I also like that I can choose my own vehicle in the garage with Alamo.
Lately no one can beat their price.
In answer to your question - you must prepay when you make your reservation. If you have a reservation you can not add prepay to it but you can make a new reservation with prepay and cancel your old reservation. This will involve new rates based on the new reservation.
I also noted that you mentioned paying by debit card - according to the Alamo website you can only use a major credit card to prepay.
