New Smoke-Free Policy
All Walt Disney World® Resorts, including Disney Vacation Club Resorts, will become smoke-free on June 1, 2007. During the past five years Guest demand for smoking rooms has been declining steadily. Currently, less than 3.5 percent of Walt Disney World's 24,000 resort rooms are smoking optional.

The new policy applies to all guest rooms, patios, and balconies, and designates outdoor smoking areas at all resorts affected by the change. Smoking is currently prohibited in all lobbies, restaurants, and convention spaces. This policy will allow us to better accommodate the large numbers of Members who request non-smoking accommodations and complements our efforts to provide our Guests with the healthy living options they are requesting.

It's about time! :cool1: It still won't stop those slobs smoking and drinking in the ol' man hot tub at POR though!

I like this idea. I always worry about someone falling asleep smoking when I am in a hotel.

Does anybody know if Fort wilderness is included in this ban?I can't see them stopping you from smoking in your own RV or TT.

Yep it is now the natural progression is next to spread this to the cruise ships then to the parks I mean DLR hotels started this now WDW resorts so the ships and parks are only a natural progression one can hope anyhow.

now if only they would add the parks into that

last time we were there some A@@hole nearly put his flippen smoke on my daughters head because he 1 wasn't paying attention and 2 SMOKING IN A PACKED AREA.

agrrrr - i can't wait for the day they announce no smoking period on any Disney property.

I'm truly glad Disney made that decision. There's nothing worst than getting to your hotel room, only to walk into that stale odour of 2 cartons of cigs.
Blagh!

:wishgoal

I am thrilled about this. I am always guaranteed a non-smoking room. But how are they going to make the current smoking rooms "non"? Without ripping out all of the carpets and painting, etc, it will still be gross. I hope that Disney realizes that a good cleaning and changing the little sign on the door will NOT do the trick.

I actually wish they'd do more about violators smoking in the parks in non-designated areas before this. If a person can no longer smoke in their room, I think you might see an increase in people smoking in the parks.

Finally !! I'm so glad about that... NOW they need to bad smoking at the parks because those smoking sections do nothing !! I really didn't get that.
You can not smoke here ... but if you stand there you can ... doesn't the smoke blow around with the wind

We're going in September and requested a non smoking room. I hate it when you do that and obviously the room was used by a smoker just the day before. It's disgusting.
My dh smokes, but he always smokes outside. And he's not a heavy smoker thankfully.
Are there designated smoking areas at the resorts too? I did read about the smoking areas in the parks.
I dont think they'll ever be able to ban smoking at the parks completely. It's still outside -kwim? And it would cut down on attendance too. If people can't be comfortable (even at the expense of others) they're going to stay home or go somewhere more accommodating to their needs. (let's remember, smoking is an addiction!)

They are and if you are caught smoking in the room it is a charge to the room of between 250-500 dollars for the cleaning and disinfecting of the room this was explained to me yesterday by MS when I called them.

Maryliz here is a small quote from teh full article in teh Orlando Sentinel regarding this.

"They want that there be no smoking in their presence. It's not just a couple feet away," Pizam said. "So this is answering the market demand. It's not just that Disney came up with the idea -- the idea came from the bottom up. The customers are demanding that."

It can be expensive to sneak a cigarette in a nonsmoking room. If Disney finds that someone did light up, a "cleaning fee" of $250 to $500 will be tacked onto the customer's bill. That is to cover the replacement of fabrics such as draperies and bedding, and the deep cleaning of everything else.

They will have designated smoking areas at the resorts so not to worry if he needs his fix he will have a place to go to get it.

YAY!!! I AM SO GLAD THEY BAN IT!!! I'm allergic to cigarette so whenever i go anywhere i always have to watch out for smoking rooms. I'm so glad I won't have to worry as much when I'm at disney world now :D.

You guys actually think this going to stop some of these people from smoking on property.
I am a smoker and live buy the rules at Disney. I go out of my way to find the areas but get pissed when I see someone else smoking anywhere they please, and Disney does nothing to stop them. The best part of this policy is that I smoke alot less
There are always going to be those that do what they please. And as far as the "fine" for smoking in the room prove it. Just because the smell is there doesn't mean you did it, what if the people next door where smoking and Disney blames you for the odor in your unit or the last people smoked in there. Are you going to pay the fine? No, you are going to argue that you are not a smoker and you are not going to pay. Unless they have video evidence of someone actually smoking, how can they prove it? Knowing Disney they will back off for fear of losing a future customer.
I am sorry for all of you who have been bothered by these smokers because they ruin it for those of us that play by the rules.

Anyway all this talk about smoking, I got to go outside and have one.

Ok.. A few erroneous things here.

This does NOT prevent you from smoking at your campsite at Fort Wilderness. Either inside or outside your RV. I'd never recommend smoking in a tent.. but I can't see how they'd stop you. This was established a few days ago on the camping board. Disney expressly indicated that outdoor smoking at the campsites is NOT prohibited.. nor are the campsites affected by this policy. The cabins however ARE.

As for the in-room smoking fines -- it's becoming an industry standard. I believe they have ionization something or others than they can run in the room to determine if the amount and presence of smoke indicates if there was somone smoking in THAT room. It's all very CSI.

They could simply check your room and those on either side.. the one with the highest levels is the winner (or loser as the case may be)

:)
