I recently stayed at the AKL. We had a room on the 4th floor, Zebra trail. While lying in bed the first night, WITH THE TV ON, Dh and I could hear every last "tinkle" of the guy (had to be a guy if ya know what I mean) upstairs!!!! Of course, that was followed by the turbo-flush!! Then the wife had her turn (much quieter, but still totally audible from OUR BED!) and again, turbo-flush. What I am most shocked about is that we could hear this FROM BED, we were not in or anywhere near the bathroom, and our TV was ON. I was totally appalled. I expected more from a deluxe, practically BRAND NEW resort!! I'm sure they had to know about sound-proofing when they built this resort! And why oh why could we hear all this from our bed? It sounded like it was right on top of us. Aren't the bathrooms all above one another due to plumbing?? I'm sure you can't sound-proof out every little noise, but this was unreal. It honestly sounded like they were using our very own bathroom. I never heard this much "tinkling" at the All-Stars! (some, but not this much!). I am glad we only stayed 2 nights. Both nights at 10 pm (like clockwork) we got "treated" to the bathroom sounds of the upstairs guests. Ick! And of course, then I had to think the people below us were hearing every sound we made, too. Kind of embarassing. Has anyone else had this experience at AKL?

Now you have us all wondering. Is it safe to potty or not? I really wouldn't appreicate that type of sound effects.

We were at the AKL for 2 weeks, over Easter. We stayed on Zebra Trail, facing the Arusha Rock savannah on the 2nd floor and never heard a peep of outside noise. It was probably the quietest hotel we've ever stayed at.

Sorry you had problems.

YIKES!

I've not stayed at AKL -- it just doesn't appeal to my DW and me. But we've stayed at other Deluxe and mods... never noticed this as a problem. But then my DW claims I'm partially deaf -- especially when she's asking me to do some chore around the house (LOL!).

Seriously, this sounds like a real problem. I did notice when we stayed at VWL they had the turbo-flush thing going and I though "Wow, what does that sound like to the people staying below me?" Fortunately, I never heard the people above me, including the turbo-flush. Maybe I was just lucky?

I had the same problem the first time we stayed there. What room number did you stay in? We may have been in the same room. What I could never understand was why the sound was over the bed area.....shouldn't it have been over the bathroom? Surely the rooms are all laid out the same.

When I stayed in a standard room a few months later there was no sound from above or around us and I know the resort was full at the time. -HM

We have stayed there twice, once on the Zebra Trail and once on Kudu trail, both Savannah view rooms. Didn't hear a thing either time. Maybe it is just certain areas of the resort.

We have stayed there twice...never heard anybody else...

I have no explanation...We've been there 6 times & never heard a pee(p)...:o

Had you been drinking that night?;) Or perhaps it was ghosts but come to think of it while I have head of 'ghosts in the machinery' I've never heard of 'ghosts in the toidy'...Nevermind!!!
  :bounce:

I never had THAT experience before, but in a very expensive hotel in Myrtle Beach we did hear the "pitter patter of little feet" above us day and night. They must have had a toddler who liked to run, run, run! We just laughed about it.
Another thing I've noticed (at all hotels) -- about 7 am you hear the sounds of showers running (from all sides).

Just back from AKL. 2nd floor, zebra trail, savannah view standard. Room was quiet except for the occasional bathroom noise from above...

Wouldn't stop me from going back, though...

You guys who "hear it" must have had very, very TALL men in the rooms above you! :p :p :p
  :bounce:

This might make it worth the extra money to get a concierge room on the top floor!!!

Found my room #--it was 4423. It was Zebra Trail, 4th floor. It was directly across (and up) from Arusha rock (which sort of blocked the view of the other side of the savanna). In addition to the bathroom noise, another drawback was that all the people who come out to Arusha Rock to see the animals can look RIGHT at you on your balcony! LOL! Strangely, this brought out some exhibitionistic behavior in my Dh! (he did have a towel on, but I could tell he was just dying to drop it! LOL!!) I really did like this resort, but I would *definitely* not get this same room again! A little farther into the "horseshoe" would be better so you can see all of the savanna. We did get lucky and saw wildebeest, Ankole cattle, giraffes, zebras, and some tall skinny LOUD birds! Great animals! And Peter Pirate is probably right--I think Paul Bunyan was upstairs from us, judging by the sound!!!

BINGO - I think I've got it!

The standard rooms are on floors 1-4 and are 344 square feet. Deluxe rooms are on floors 5 and 6 and are 381 square feet. All rooms have balconies.

The rooms on 4 and 5 are not laid out the same - so who knows where the bathrooms are?

While the deluxe rooms are larger I think the bathrooms are the same size and so are the hallways so the bathrooms line up. The extra room in the 5th floor rooms is at the end nest to the balconey. i wonder if maybe there was a suite above your room, though even those may be layed out with the bathrooms in line vertically.

..and I'm booking this resort for a first-time stay this summer! I do have to remark about one aspect of this dilemma. I feel "sorry" for the "tinklers" above you...as they had NO IDEA their Private acts were "audible"...or "disturbing" others. Just think if it was you and your DH on the upper floor...and a couple lying in their bed below were listening to you?! Oh...I shudder to think about this! Now...I'll have a PHOBIA about using the toilet in this resort, and I'll undoubtedly blabber this story to DH...and he'll go bonkers!!:p OH...the things we learn on these boards...LOL.

I stayed in 6th Floor Concierge Room 6209 last week for 4 nights and I could hear the same noises...all the way from the "last bit" (if you know what I mean) to Turbo Flush-land!

I usually stay at the YC and it was my first time at the AKL so I just assumed it was a quirk with my room, but after reading this thread, I'm not sure if there is actually a seventh floor...but I sure heard the noises.

Could it be possible that the noises were coming from the room adjacent to your room on the "same floor"??

Just a thought,

Wendell

Had you been drinking that night? Or perhaps it was ghosts but come to think of it while I have head of 'ghosts in the machinery' I've never heard of 'ghosts in the toidy'..

But with the Haunted Mansion closed didn't the ghosts have to go somewhere?? I've worked for 17 years at the same place and I guess I have gotten used to sharing my potty time (and sounds) with all and sundry. I don't think it would bother me too much.

Wendell - good thought - right next door - bathrooms might back-up to your bedroom - cause thier are only 6 floors......

Have stayed at the AKL three times -- fifth floor (once) and third floor (twice). My only bathroom complaint came from our first stay -- Opening Day of the resort's Opening Week.

As my husband was using the bathroom, he noticed that the telephone in the bathroom was flashing a "red" light (I should note that the phone was not "ringing"). My husband picked up the handset and heard a woman on the other end of the line. He said "hello" and she said "hello." He assumed that she was calling him, but she was asking him why he was calling her. After a few minutes of conversation, both parties determined that the phone lines most have been crossed in the switch box and thus the two of them thought each other was doing the calling. From that point on, our bathroom's telephone was called the "Potty-Line." (We did notify the resort of the peculiar problem. We don't know what they determined but our telephone, especially the "Potty-Line," worked flawlessly for the rest of our vacation.)
