Could someone tell me more about the children's activities at the Animal Kindgom lodge.

First of all, AKL has a beautiful pool. They also have a Hidden Mickey hunt, but that may depend on the age(s) of your child(ren). They also have activities where the kids can earn beads for a bead necklace. If all five activites are completed, the child receives the totem bead. (The activities include animal tracking, junior researcher, music of the savanna, animal games, and flamingo feeding.) Each afternoon they have cookie decorating in one of the restaurants and later medallion rubbing. (They're are large medallions in the floor of the lobby with designs; the children are given pieces of paper to place over the medallion and pencil to use to rub the design onto the paper.)

We did all of these activities except for the cookie decorating and the medallion rubbing. We plan to do those on our trip next month. We actually added an extra day to our vacation just to spend more time at the hotel - it was great.

My kids also loved the gift shop - there are lots of African instruments for sale and the CM's allow the kids to play with them some. Almost every time we walked by the gift shop, we had to go in for at least a few minutes.

Also, there are pool activites scheduled throughout the day. (i.e. - family games, arts and crafts with the lifeguards, games with the lifeguards, etc.)

And lastly, of course, there are plenty of places to view the animals throughout the resort. :D

I am just wondering do you have to be staying at akl to do these activities ? They sound like so much fun

We're only 2:15 hours north and it's been very cold & we leave at the end of January. Is the pool heated?

I do know that the pool is heated. I don't know if people not staying at AKL can participate in the activities there or not.

Are the activities at the AKL supervised? Are parents required to be there or is it like the Grand Floridian where they have the Pirate Adventure and Great Adventures in Cooking where ther parents drop the kids off for an hour or so and the great CM's run the activity? I was hoping to surprise my wife with a spa treatment at the AKL (and maybe do one myself) and was wondering if there CM supervised activities for about 60 to 90 minutes.

Qualifier: I'm not looking for a daycare - just a 60 to 90 minute CM-supervised activity (like the two noted above) so that I may be able to pull off this surprise.

I havent been but from my reading (we are staying there in 3 weeks)- the supervised activities you are paying a good bit for. These are free activities. I would think older children could probably participate on their own but it does not appear that there is any real supervision from the cm's, just instruction. These also appear to be extremely short activities. They dont seem to be anything like the ones at the grand floridian.

What age/sex children do you have? At the spa, they also have a my first facial for girls, dont remember what the ages are for that.

When my daughter participated in the activities, I sat nearby so that I could keep an eye on her. The activities are not like they are at the Grand Floridian where the children are supervised and the parents/guardians are given pagers in case they need to be reached in the event of an emergency.

I have a few photos to share:

My daughter had a wonderful time with the Cast Members and the other children while we were guests of the Animal Kingdom Lodge.
