Where do you keep your dress?

Right now I have it cleaned and boxed in my closet but I am thinking about moving it to the basement for space issues. Our's parcially exposed and would never flood/much since we are on thte top of a hill.

Are basements okay for long term storage? I doubt tte girls will want to wear it but maybe use a piece into there dresses for luck.

I had mine cleaned and it has been in FIL's closet since then. I looked at it a couple of years ago, and some stains have shown up over time. I wonder if they would come out now.

I am not even sure why I am keeping it. SIL wore MIL's dress, and her daughter plans on wearing it, but I can't imagine either one of my kids would want to wear mine. Heck, I wouldn't even want to wear it now.

I am not sure where is the best place to store it, but I would be afraid that any bit of moisture (ie damp basement) would damage it.

Mine is in our upstairs spare closet. I never boxed it, just hung it up. I used to try it on from time to time. My mom made it so I would like to hang on to it.

I had mine cleaned and stored in one of those air tight boxes, along with my veil. I hav it up the attic...which reminds me I should check on the condition of the box...we had a little visitor up there...hopefully it didn't chew on the box.

My MIL took my dress home with her and had it cleaned and hung in a sealed garment bag. It's now in her closet, which is probably a good thing because I'd probably be getting it out and wearing it around the house if it were here! I love my wedding dress; It was exactly what I wanted and I felt like a princess wearing it.

If the basement is dry, there's no problems with mold or mildew, and the temperature is fairly stable, it would be a good option if you're concerned about keeping the dress in good condition. If the condition of the dress really doesn't matter, then don't worry about where you store it - just pick a spot that makes the most sense space wise.

My friend took her wedding dress in to a seamstress and had a miniature version made and displays it on a tiny dressmaker's dummy. She then donated her dress to an organization that provides formal dresses to low-income girls/women for proms, weddings, quinceaneras, etc.

I, like the rest of you had mine cleaned and boxed. What a waste though. If I was getting married today I would still do the same and put it in the attic, then in a few years I would be once again saying, "what a waste".

My mom just took mine to be cleaned and boxed. I'm not attached to it but she wants to keep it! Whatever makes her happy...as long as I'm not the one losing the closet space.

I had mine cleaned and sealed inside a box after the wedding. I had done some research on dress preservation and found out that with dress fabric like mine the sealed box is actually a bad thing so I broke the seal. I plan on turning it into a quilt as I love the dress but dont thing that my son that I currently have or a daughter if I ever have one would have no use for an intact dress. I have to find a quilter that I am comfortable allowing to do this though. As long as the dress is in a dry and temperture stable area, it should be ok. Also make sure it isnt hanging up as over time the fabric will rip.

I haven't seen my dress since my wedding day! I think it is somewhere in my Mom's attic. I really don't care, I have the pictures, and it's not like I am ever going to wear it again!

Signed, liamsaunt, who wanted to have a barbeque wedding on the beach, but who, along with her DH, was bribed with an all-expenses paid honeymoon into a formal church wedding by her parents.

I sold it. It was the best decision for me and haven't regretted it a second.

If you want to keep it, I would have it professional preserved by a reputable company and put in a climate controlled area like a closet or something.

I was going to seal and box mine, but never got around to it.

It hung in my closet for a long time...then it fell to the closet floor where the cat made a bed out of it. And there it lies...covered in cat hair. A very soft expensive cat bed.

At least it is getting some use!

We have one of those food savers you see at 2 a.m.. on TV. So, after it was drt cleaned, I folded it up, took the air out, and sealed it. Nice and flat and takes up no space. I did the same thing with the clothes the DK wore home from hospital, first birthday, or things Great Grandma knitted for them.

Mine is still hanging in the closet. Hasn't even been cleaned yet (I know, I know), and we had our 9th anniversary last week. I'm thinking it's too late to have anything done to it by now, but I really don't know what to do with it. I used to try it on every year on our anniversary, haven't done that for awhile and probably won't again.
