So we currently have an extended verandah on the very back of the ship... And I've been reading about how aft makes a lot of people more seasick. I get motion sickness, though on my last cruise years and years ago, the only time I got queasy was on a rough sea night. I have no idea how my two boys, 8 and 11, will do.

Should I consider giving up my much-wanted extended verandah in favor of something more mid-ship?

In the words of Johnny 5, Need Input.
What ship are you on, and what itinerary are you doing, as that will have a big impact on how much the ship may or may not move. For example, on a 3 night Bahamaian cruise you wont be at sea long enough to get sick. A 7 night cruise in Jan running the East, you may see more movement.

In that case, you shouldn't have too much of a problem. When is your cruise? The weather is starting to settle down between here and the Bahamas. With that said, theres a few tricks for avoiding feeling sea sick

Motion sickness, or Sea Sickness, is basically an imbalance from what your eyes are seeing vs what your body feels. Theres any number of reasons why, but some of the more common are, dehydration, fluid build up in your ears, even a wrong prescription can do it. You can even talk your self into being sick. Some of the avoidance tips are in no particular order,
Drink plenty of clear fluids.
If you start feeling queezy go out on deck. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. When you open your eyes, look as far out to the horizon as you can. This will help reset your feeling.
Eat some crackers like saltines or cheezits, this will help settle your stomach. Green apples work well also.

We were aft in January on the Magic with no seasickness issues at all, & I'm a hurler who easily gets motion sick.:crazy2:

That said, it was an exceptionally beautiful few days, with perfect, calm weather. I'm sure a trip on stormy seas would be a different story.

Our cruise is in February. I'm hoping if I go fully prepare, I will have worried for nothing.

Get some ginger root and some dramamine just in case you're worried. I get motion sickness, and with both of those I have zero issues.

Aft is my favorite part of the ship-- it's so convenient to everything! My son still gets sick riding in the car (he's 12) and the first cruise we sailed he felt bad for a day or 2 (and that was out of Galveston in December-- with some pretty rough seas) and since then he's had no problems.

We had a 5E on the Fantasy last year and my family was fine. Since my 1st cruise on the Wonder I found out I get seasick. Now I always take a ginger pill and dramamine starting the day before the cruise, everyday during it and a day or two after and has worked like a charm.

We were on Deck 6 aft in the dream with a verandah and didn't have any issues. I actually came to love the "rock you to sleep" motion, but I really only felt movement when laying down - even sitting on the verandah was very smooth!

Just off the Fantasy - sister to the Dream and had an aft stateroom.
I can tell you a LOT of vibration back there! Didn't bother us , rocked us to sleep and was definitely more pronounced at higher cruising speeds ..but a glass of water on the coffee table was sloshing!

Minnie56, what floor were you on? So when you say vibrations, you mean shaking? No swells and rolling?

I had an aft extended verandah cabin on the Fantasy and although I didn't get seasick it felt like a jack hammer by the 3rd night of my cruise. I think it was unique to my cruise since the service desk said they have never felt it like that before. We have almost always have an aft room including one for our upcoming cruise on the Wonder. I usually wear a patch and drink gingerale each night with dinner. By the way we loved the extended balcony! :)

How much of the ginger did you take? Did you take both pills at same time? And when during the day did you take them? I'm a real threat to get sea sick!

I just take one ginger pill in the morning (Vitamin aisle at Walmart). Then before bed I take the dramamine.

Deck 7 .. No I wouldn't say swells or rolling. Swells would be felt more forward.
A vibration ...our friend is an officer on the ship and he came to our stateroom upon boarding and said you know ..you're going to get some rocking here ?!?!?! :sail:

I would suggest called your family Doctor, who knows you and your family and ask him what he would recommend, if needed!

As previously posted, ginger will help and dry crackers. The crackers suck up the moisture in your tummy and prevents it from moving around. We would recommend this to the mug (freshman) Cadets......seemed to help quite often.

Have a great cruise.

Omg, we're on deck 7 aft, also! Our cruise is March 26. Were the seas especially rough or was it really windy? Or is the vibration always in that part of the ship because of engine location or something.
