Adding money to Disney Gift card?

My mother in law is wanting to get my kids Disney Gift cards for christmas and birthdays for our up coming trip. Is there any way money can be added to a card after its bought, like for example buying a $25 card then adding $20 here and there until time for our trip. Another question, when we are done with our trip if there is still money left on the card, like under $5 is it just a lose? We dont have any Disney stores near us and this is our first trip so unsure how they work?

The only way I know of adding money to the cards is at the Disney Store or at one of the Disney parks. You don't lose the money, they don't charge for inactivity, if that's what you're asking.

If you have a Kroeger or Smith's grocery store, they have the Disney gift cards that don't have a face value (the one's that are specifically $25, $50, etc.) so you can add whatever you want. Our Disney Store closed last year so we just just put our gift card money away until right before our trip and then go buy a gift card from Smith's, plus we have their rewards card so we earn 2x fuel points.

You can also apply them all to your room and then "charge it" to the room making is prepaid without carrying 20 cards with you.

Here is an old thread about doing it by phone. It worked for me in 2010, but I'm not sure if things have changed since then. It is a 1-800 though, so at least if it doesn't work anymore, you won't be out any phone charges (just time!).
