Has anyone ever taken Adderall to lose weight? I did some reserch on this after hearing that is can curb your appetite. I read that it used to be prescribed as a diet drug. Anyhow my PCP, gave me a prescription for some. He said anyone could benefit from taking it, it makes you more focused, gives you energy & the best part is your not that hungry. I only wanted to lose about 5 lbs, but it gives you so much energy. I have been in the best shape ever. Has anyone else ever taken this?

Adderall is basically speed (Amphetamines). Lauri had to take a form of this for awhile when she was suffering from fatigue from Chemo meds. She couldn't stand it. Made her heart race and made her jittery.

That is one thing I did not really find with it. My heart would usually race with diet pills, but this one does not really do it to me. I asked the doctor if it was safe & he said yes, I just do not want to have any long term effects just to have some energy.

People have all kinds of different reactions to medicines. I'm sure there are plenty of people that can function fine on Adderall while there are some that it totally wipes them out.

Just a word of warning.. all drugs like that can be highly addicting. Don't ever think "I'm having a hard day, let me take one more" because before you know it you will be dependant on them.

No I havent taken it but my sister does. She is hooked, I feel sorry for her because she to just wanted to loose a few lbs. Its been years now, My sister looks sick, cant keep a normal conversation and is still getting this drug from her doctor.

The drug is compaired to speed (on the open market, kids sell it at schools its a real problem around here). Makes me sick dr's are giving it out so freely.

My sister is married to a very well off busness man, I wished she had just hired a personal trainer.

Please do some research before you get hooked. They say you dont but I am seeing the very sad fact that yes you can.

For those who have prescriptions for the drug, doctors say it is almost completely safe. It is nonprescribed users who sometimes run into health risks.

It's basically a form of amphetamine (aka speed), but works in different ways for different people. Those that have ADD, it helps control that. For "non ADD" people, it supresses appetite & helps concentration.

Problems with abuse, as with anything, but hey, if it's been prescribed & works for you, great!

Personally, I have this mild sado-masochistic streak that says I have to sweat my extra pounds off of my a**. It's punishment for putting them on in the first place.

My son takes adderall for his ADHD, and yes one of the side effects is loss of weight, due to not being hungry. Also one side effect is not be ableto sleep. It is a classified drug so it has to be monitored with blood work and weight checks once a month.

Thanks everyone I will check into this. My pharmacist told me about the possiblity of addiction, but when I questioned my doctor he said no. He told me if you stop taking it, you will just miss all the energy & you will not feel as focused. He just acted like it was not a possiblity to do anything potentially harmful.

For the life of me I don't understand how someone would risk the adverse and addictive effects of a drug(for an offlabel use) to lose 5 pounds. This doctor should be reported for even thinking about prescribing it.

Need better focus and want to lose 5 pounds, go for a long walk everyday.

You know, I think this is the best advice you have gotten on this thread.

The reason I posted is because I wanted more info. As I previously stated the doctor told me this was a safe drug & just gave you some positive effects. I take it for the energy & the energy helps me want to exercise. Of course I would not take it if I found it to be harmful. I just wanted to make sure th information that I was given by my doctor was correct. Also the doctor did give me a test to take for ADD, & like he said pretty much anyone could fall into that category.

Myself being an adult thoroughly tested/clinically diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed a drug comparable to adderoll, this concerns me a doctor would even consider giving someone adderoll for weight loss. This is the reason it is so hard for people, especially adults who have adhd to be taken seriously and given prescription drugs, when doctors like that make comments like.............. like he said pretty much anyone could fall into that category.

that is some bologna, No wonder the condition is treated so non-chalantly when people especially doctors make that kind of comment.

It just sounds like you are looking for an easy way to loose the weight and oh yeah an energy booster too

First of all I did not go with it just to lose weight, it was an extra benefit. The main reason, wheter it is good to some or not, was because of the energy. I have two children that have ADHD & I do understand the severity of that. I was just wanting to know if anyone had taken this & if it had any potentially dangerous effects. I think anyone would like to have extra energy if it not harmful to them. I do like the fact that I can get more things accomplished when I am taking this medication, but I did not want to sacrafice my health. So again the reason for this post, was to make sure the information that I was given was correct.

Hey, I figure if it works for you ... all the better. Good for you for taking your health into your own hands and going to the doctor. I bet that for every post you get bashing you for holding an Adderall scrip for weight loss, there are dozens of women on this board teetering between mild and morbid obesity who have never realistically discussed their weight with a doctor.

IMO, if that is you on Main Street USA in front of the Castle, you look great!!!
Thank you very much. While I am sure alot of women are never satisfied & will always feel like they have to struggle to stay thin.

Caradana, Thanks for not bashing me. I did do reserch on this drug & I asked my doctor & it was once prescribed as a diet drug. They have just found other uses for it. So while I use it for weight loss others can use it for whatever it helps them with.

It isn't prescribed as a diet drug anymore because of the addictive and adverse effects.

It works well for those with ADHD because they are less likely to suffer the addictive and adverse effects, being that their brains and body respond differently to the drug, is my non-medical understanding.

I am not at all bashing you..........you followed your dr.'s advice. However, I am not sure that's such a great doc you've got there. The statement that everyone pretty much can be said to have ADHD is ridiculous.........as you, as the mother of two ADHD kids probably realize. They are not like others, and others who don't have it can't begin to know all the difficulties they encounter. This doctor seems very laissez-faire to me.

That is why I posted, I just wanted to see if anyone else had taken this for weight loss, & to make sure no one had any negative effects. I just did not want to take something thinking it was a o.k., then one day wake up with some serious side affects. I have read that you could become addicted, but when I asked him he told me no that was not true. I guess it would appear dumb to some people, my originial reasons for taking this medicine. But honestly with 3 children I feel drained & to keep up with them is a job in itself. So I just thought if I could safely take something that boosts your metabolism while giving you extra energy, then I found GOLD. I will be going back to my doctor with some additional questions. In his defense, he is making me have some tests run to check my overall health. So I thought if I was being monitored on this medication, then it should be safe.

If your dr. told you this, I think you need to find a new one.
