Adam Levine: "I hate this country"

Eh - not a big deal in my book. I have said it many times. Stupid laws, or lack thereof. Stupid people, etc.

Why this is even an issue - what he said - is beyond me. At the core of it - free country, he has every right to express his sentiment.

Adam - you need a shoulder to cry on as the media picks on you - look me up. I am all yours ;)

This is really interesting to me. When I saw this thread, the first thing I thought of was the Dixie Chicks and how INSANE people went over a certain statement the lead singer made. To me, it's kind of the same thing. I would bet there are people on this thread giving Adam a free pass but who HATED what she said and boycotted them. To me, the reaction over her statement was crazy. She had the right to say what she did, but she was still slammed.

I didn't get all in the air about it, but I do think that what she said was a whole lot different than what Adam said. She needed to apologize.

Johnny Depp got slammed for a statement he made too and as much as I love Johnny, he was wrong and he came back and apologized for it. He didn't mean it the way it sounded. Something about the US being like a puppy?? maybe someone else remembers.

No big deal. He said it out of frustration because of the voting results. But I'm sure people will blow it all out of proportion because they won't bother to read why he said it.
As demonstrated on this thread already...[/QUOTE]

Yup, I hate when people do that!!:sad2:

So he said something that was not politically correct? Where's the anti-PC crowd when you need them?

Meh, barely a blip on the day. Some people need to be busier.

I think there's a difference between having a right to say something and being free of any consequences when you say it.

Lots of musicians safe offensive (or not so offensive) things. But, you don't want to offend the very people who buy your records. Green Day said the same things and then some, but their audience actually liked it.

In my opinion, there is a big difference in what Adam said and what Natalie Maines said.

During a London concert ten days before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, lead vocalist Maines said, "we don't want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States [George W. Bush] is from Texas"

Huge difference. Its one thing to say that you hate America in the context of a reality shows voting habits and its totally different to bash a sitting American President on stage when you are in another country.

When I saw the clip of him saying it, its not a big deal.

I agree with this. I loved the Dixie Chicks but her statement turned me off. My nana used to say don't air your dirty laundry and I felt like that is what she was doing.

I find it odd people are pushing for him to apologize. If he isn't sorry and doesn't offer the apology on his own, then a forced apology means nothing.

I honestly think it was shorthand for "I hate the way this country voted"

ITA..... however saying it was just a joke was not cool. I heard it live and saw his face. Like I tell my kids, we all make mistakes...... just don't lie your way out of it.

I too say things I don't mean out of stress or anger. I think those that really do hate American should get out, and those of us who really do love where we live but sometimes say stupid things should just admit our mistakes and move on.

I agree. I heard it when I watched the show and immediately knew what he meant (and it wasn't "I hate the USA and all it stands for.") It surprised me that he said it (I knew there'd be backlash) but, in context, it didn't bother me at all. However, I think he handled it poorly by saying it was "a joke." It was frustration talking, not something he said to be funny.

And I really doubt that him tweeting the definitions of joke, humorless, etc made any of the people who *were* offended feel any better about it. I know that in my own life, I do not feel better when someone does something that I deem offensive or mean-spirited then they say "Geez, it was just a joke. Can't you take a joke?!" Poor way to handle it, IMHO.

I'm not singling you out, I just chose to quote you..

To me, she didn't bash the President at all. She said she was ashamed he was from Texas. That's all. She didn't say he sucks or she hoped someone would hurt him.
If someone said they were ashamed our Prime Minister was from their province it wouldn't bother me one bit. I know there wouldn't be the uproar that there was over the Dixie Chicks.

I took it as I hate the stupid people who live in this country that don't know talent when they see it.

NOT as I hate living in this country, the freedom, and quality of life we have.
I seriously doubt he means he wishes he lived somewhere else.

Sometimes people say I hate this country & they really mean I hate the politicians currently in office & the direction we are going.

I'm here!!! Seriously, there's no need to play gotcha with a guy who just basically got beat by Blake Shelton. It's clear it was the voters he hated for rejecting his poor song choices. Intent is everything.
