Accident on Pirates?

If he lost his fingers because he had his arms up, then he wasn't keeping his hands & arms inside the boat at all times as directed. He did break the rules.

And here we go with speculation and rumor...hands in the water, hands above his head...sigh.

Honestly, I personally doubt the veracity of the hands above his head story simply because if that is what happened, the ride would not have reopened for other guests, as doing so is a common thing to do...and not a violation of rules.

Thinking we need to take ALL stories about this with HUGE grains of salt...I'm talking about grains so big, Lot's wife appears to be a heart healthy substitute.

Wow. I don't even know what to say to that. What a terrible thing to have happen if that's true. Meanwhile, this entire thread has been a fascinating glimpse into human behavior.

Fascinating is one way to describe it.
I can think of others.

It could have been a fluke thing that happened. Even though they make the announcement to keep your hands inside, there should be protection in case someone either accidentally or intentionally put their hand out that they don't get hurt. Especially in a park with lots of children. If there wasn't, I think this would happen more often.

Hmm... Huh... So... it appears that maybe perhaps a (kid/man/other) (may/may not) have lost a (finger/two fingers/none) due to sticking (his/her) hand (above/below/outside/underneath) the PotC ride in the (drop/elsewhere ) during the ride.

Riiight.... :confused::confused3

About the only thing clear here and apparently indisputable is that PotC was closed for a few hours yesterday. Why? Heavens only knows. But I'm sure the Internets will continue to try to elucidate us with many potential reasons as to "why". :goodvibes

If someone did get hurt through their own fault or Disney's, I do hope he/she is doing well.

Bizarre one

But if as his daughter says he just had his hands in the air and he isn't particular tall then why was the ride opened so quickly afterwards?

If it was something that simple and not a fault then surely it would happen more often?

Gosh, his wife really should have been keeping an eye on him. How neglectful of her!

Accidents happen, to everyone no matter what age. Until I read a REAL report on what happened, I'll assume there was a mechanical error and the ride was shut down for that.

Why can't we stop being so judgmental towards each other? It's sad to see (read) how mean some people are without even knowing what is really going on.

For the record, my original comment that this responded to was a response itself to the generic question posted by a pp of "who let's their child put their hand far enough in the water...." which even stated "I know we don't know what's happened here". So my response was a generic response, to the generic question and not a condemnation of this specific sitaution, since there were no facts at that point. I see parents watch their kids do things they shouldn't be all the time with no attempt to correct, like it of not it's out there and it appears to be getting worse, not better. And that's where my comment was coming from. I'm actually a very empathetic person and I don't consider myself to be gross at all, but you're entitled to your opinion that you've formed from one message board comment.

Now for this specific incident, I'm relieved that it wasn't a small child and honestly, knowing that it was an adult just really allows me to file this under "things that happen when you're a moron, of course assuming there was no disability, physical or mental that would impede good judgement and/or physical ability.

Well, now I have two message board comments on which to form my opinion.

It's nice to know you consider yourself an empathetic person, as I am one who greatly appreciates irony.

A British tourist has lost the tips of two fingers on a log flume ride at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Florida.

The man lost the tips of his right hand's ring and little fingers on the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction on Thursday morning, fire officials said.

The unnamed tourist, whose condition has not been disclosed, was taken to hospital.

Bo Jones, of the Reedy Creek Fire Department, told Sky News it is possible the thrill-seeker did not keep his hand inside the ride.

"We received a call from a Disney cast member informing us that a guest had been injured, so we responded and he was treated at a local hospital. It was a non-emergency situation," he said.

"He was around 57 years old. What the medic told me is was he was saying, 'I had my hand on the side of the boat and I shouldn't have. It was all my fault.'"

Disney officials stopped the ride for safety checks before reopening it later on Thursday.

The decades-old attraction was the inspiration for the hugely popular Pirates of the Caribbean film series, starring Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley.
