Bulletin! You do not have to be "ignoring" your child for your young child to suddenly and impulsively do something you did not expect - like running into the street, jumping off something, leaning back in a chair, hitting someone, or - yes! imagine! - reaching over the side of a boat. (And if your child, like two of mine, has ADHD, they'll do things like this even more often.)

Accidents happen. Not because society has gone to hell in a hand basket and all parents are crap (because accidents are a totally new thing, that just started happening in the last few years). If anything, most the parents I know are OVERLY attentive, hovering over their children. But kids' brains aren't fully developed yet and they do stupid, reckless stuff that you can't always anticipate.

For the record, my original comment that this responded to was a response itself to the generic question posted by a pp of "who let's their child put their hand far enough in the water...." which even stated "I know we don't know what's happened here". So my response was a generic response, to the generic question and not a condemnation of this specific sitaution, since there were no facts at that point. I see parents watch their kids do things they shouldn't be all the time with no attempt to correct, like it of not it's out there and it appears to be getting worse, not better. And that's where my comment was coming from. I'm actually a very empathetic person and I don't consider myself to be gross at all, but you're entitled to your opinion that you've formed from one message board comment.

Now for this specific incident, I'm relieved that it wasn't a small child and honestly, knowing that it was an adult just really allows me to file this under "things that happen when you're a moron, of course assuming there was no disability, physical or mental that would impede good judgement and/or physical ability.

Now that we think we know that the "victim" was an adult, I have a request.

All of the people who have never EVER taken their eyes off their kids for half a second, whose kids have never done anything stupid within your presence, whose kids are the 100% model of perfection every hour of every day.......could you please tell me how you do it? I bow down to your greatness.

^^This. I go to WDW once a week and I was speaking from prior experience, not necessarily directly related to this case, about how every time I go I see more and more children being allowed to act ridiculously to the point where injury or getting lost might ensue.

We're not talking looking away for two seconds and having the kid do something that gets them almost hurt. We're talking letting very little ones RUN AWAY from their parents, several meters away, mere minutes before a parade is about to start and all streets have already been cleared...or letting kids splash in fountains/use chairs as jungle gyms/otherwise do stupid, dangerous things for many minutes on end as if the parents haven't a care in the world. That is, until poor Jimmy gets hurt and Mommy and Daddy have to sue because their perfect little angel is going to have emotional distress from getting a bruise at Disney World...

If the track broke and they were injured...shame on Disney and no jokes. If they ignored ALL warnings and lost a finger, shame on them and I have zero sympathy. Heck, if I were the jacka$$ who did that I'd probably joke about it myself.

exactly! I have an 8 year old that makes stupid decisions on a daily basis. Even when I'm standing there. He's wired that way and I do my best to keep him in check but I can't monitor his every move. He was born a dare devil. Love him though!

It doesn't matter why they were injured, the fact that idiots on this board think it is ok to make light of someone else's misfortune is awful and speaks volumes about their lack of character/class. And yes, I'm referring to you as well.

We'll it was a stupid thing to do he probs paid thousands on air fare just to get to wdw and then most uk guests stay at least 2 weeks. So a very expensive ruined vacation. I'm also wondering if Disney will ban him from the parks for breaking rules. There's no doubt he will try and sue.

Do we know why he put his hand in the water? Was he pretending to reach for gold to impress someone in his boat? Or maybe did his son just drop his ridiculously expensive prescription eyeglasses in the water and he reflexively grabbed after them?

Either case I feel badly for the guy. Losing part of your hand is awful. He has a lifetime reminder of either his stupidity or misfortune.

But even if it had turned out to be a child involved in this, nobody was talking about behavior of this sort. A child near water quickly sticking their hand in is very different from what you describe.

I've not read every page of this, but this sounds like his hand was nowhere near the water at all? If that's true, this is sad and very scary. I hope he's ok!
