has anyone rented a wheelchair accessible van, that is one with a lift. if so which company

There are several companies listed in post 3 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread. That thread is near the top of this board or you can follow the link in my signature.

Be prepared for sticker shock - they cost a lot more to rent than a regular van!

If you are staying on property ME is accessible (they can note it on your reissue and have an accessible bus. Disney transport is also pretty accessible once on property.

That is true, but some people do want to rent a vehicle.

You can find information on Disney's Magical Express accessible buses in the first poston page 2 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread.
A post on page one of that thread has information about using WDW transportation.

Before ME came along we rented a couple of times from Rainbow wheels. Now with the price of the rental wwe find it cheaper to either use Mears or a taxi if we want to go off site.

We find DME and the buses to work well for us when we're on-site at WDW, but we also like the chance to head down to Vero Beach to the DVC resort there. We went to Rainbow Wheels' site and requested info over a month ago, but have heard nothing back; assuming it's now a cobweb site - inactive.

Could anyone with experience renting a ramp van or lift van post links to companies actually operating in the Orlando area that we might be able to use? When I Google it, I keep coming up with companies far away from Orlando trying to sell me a van (and we already have one); just finding it hard seperating the wheat from the voluminous chaff here.

As for the stickies listed above, I am not seeing the ones referred to; perhaps someone could post a link?

Thx

We've rented a few times with Discount Mobility\Florida Van Rentals (they seem to have multiple names). Overall, they were fine. They are the best price that I could find.

They usually drop off and pick up the van at the valet parking for the Hyatt Regency at MCO\OIA. This works ok. Sometimes, you can get a valet to help you with the bags to your airline.

The pick up hasn't really gone too smooth. The last time, they were over an hour late to drop off a van at the Boardwalk. I would say pack your patience with them.

The vans have been in pretty good shape. The last one we rented had a fold-up ramp and was VERY loud. We are used to a ramp that rolls up under the van (Honda).

We are going to try Rainbow Wheels (now called Wheelchair Vans of American, what is with the name changes?) for a trip in June. It is more expensive than Discount Mobility, but they seem to have nicer models and I want to try the curb drop off and pick up. I'll post back with our experience.

Mobility Freedom also rents vans and is in the Orlando area. I bought my ramp van from them so I've not had experience renting.

I keep hoping that a few of the bigger rental companies will start carrying the MV-1 http://www.vpgautos.com/ for a purpose built handicap van it costs are lower than converting a minivan so rental shouldn't be as crazy as they are now.
