Abby Sunderland Missing

Her parents put her at risk with their decision. At the end of the day, she is a child - a 16 year old child. Seriously, how accomplished can she really be at 16? Before technology and all the equipment she has, she wouldn't even have stood a chance.

I don't think that anyone can deny that this is one tough little girl. I don't care how much equipment and technology she had. She still had to have the courage to venture to the middle of nowhere by herself, endure months of being alone in the worst weather. She is a child. An exceptional child in an age when most children are pampered and protected and she prevailed. Thank God. God knows I prayed over this. HOWEVER, her parents were foolish to permit this and encourage this, no matter how capable and exceptional she is. She is still a kid.

I just don't see this "need" for fame. If she hadn't needed this rescue the original (and quite stale) thread about this on the DIS would never have popped up again. Most people I know knew nothing about this voyage. In addition, since there was no "record" to set any longer, there was no fame involved anymore. If they were truly in it for the fame, they would have been hyping this trip every night on some news show, or would have called off the trip once the record was no longer attainable.
I knew about her voyage and that of Jessica Watson. I think both stunts were and are stupid. By the grace of God, Jessica made it. I look forward to when Abby is home. I think both girl's parents are irresponsible.

There is no record any more since the sailing community doesn't want to encourage these stupid stunts. Why do you think the European girl (12 or 13) was forbidden to sail (by law - yes, it went to court) even though her stupid parents encouraged it?????

I've seen 13 year olds on a diving team. It's just themselves on the high dive. They are coached, but, in an instant anything could go wrong, since it is just themselves. There is no chance of rescue, because a broken neck could end their diving career in an instant. I don't see people putting up a fuss about a decision to let a 13-year old dive. :confused3
Toad_Passenger, I think you might be a teenager, not a parent.

And her parents should be made to pay for her rescue efforts.

Heh, no. Unfortunately I'm 14 years removed from having "teen" at the end of my age. In addition I'm the proud Papa of a DD, turning 4 soon, and a DS, 4 months. :thumbsup2

Congratulations on your parenthood! You had me fooled by your comments. Sorry about that. I stand corrected!

While I am extremely relieved and glad she is alive and safe, I'm afraid that all the publicity generated from this story will sadly encourage others to push kids to more and more risky activities, all in the name of being "the first" or "the youngest".

Yes, as long as the parents are not held accountable, we may be watching children in diapers circumnavigating the world in the very near future. It really is getting ridiculous. What is wrong with kids being kids? Does everyone have to be the first or youngest to do something? What happened to parents saying NO - it isn't a safe thing to do????

At the end of the day, it was her parents that gave her the okay to perform this stunt. They are her guardians, not the sponsors. Her parents are the only ones who could have said yes or no to her. They chose to let her go - no doubt because they wanted their 15 minutes of fame. Now they should be held accountable and made to pay back the cost of her rescue.

Seriously, as a parent, it is your job to do what is in the best interest of your child. Does anyone honestly think that letting your child sail across the ocean in winter where 30 feet swells are possible is a good idea? NO is a very powerful word when your child is a minor. I suspect their need for fame is stronger than their parenting skills.

The only one who would get fame from this is Abby. Not the parents. Sure they might be in a picture or two but nobody gives 2 iotas about them. The only attention they're going to get is from all the overprotective and busy buddy people on the Dis.

Sorry off-topic, but I so miss having little kids! Congratulations to your new baby and Happy Birthday to your almost 4-year-old!

Ok, no more OT for me!:)

Um...there are/were many more people against these kinds of stunts.http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...bby-Sunderlands-circumnavigation-attempt.html Other than that, I don't figure they care that 5 people on a disney msg board disagree or agree with them. :upsidedow

Stop trying to make us mad at you; it ain't gonna work! We like you anyway, warts and all.:p

It does not negate the fact that their decision put her in harms way and they should get a bill for the subsequent rescue efforts. Who cares who gets the attention. I think it was an irresponsible decision on the part of the parents (who clearly are not overprotective; which if I understand your post, must be a bad thing in any and all situations).

You said the parents allowed their daughter so they could get fame. I'm asking you, what fame?? The parents get none.

The parents were irresponsible. It is winter in the southern hemisphere. No one should be sailing there - let alone a 16 year old child. They are getting publicity as Abby's parents (but not in a positive way). The issue here is their irresponsible parenting and the subsequent rescue efforts needed and why they should be the ones to foot the bill.

Nope, please don't be.

LOL, just go with the idea that it is like being carded at 35.:)

Don't worry, I'm one of those really easy going people. I've said on another thread, that if I ever met someone from the DIS that I had a huge debate/disagreement with, I'd smile say, "Pleased to meet ya'," and then offer to buy you a drink or something. :thumbsup2
