A YOU Worth Fighting For | January 2016 Weight Loss & Better Living Challenge

Starting with the "usual suspects" - how is your water intake this week? Your sleeping patterns? Your stress levels? Your... regularity? Also, you exerted a ton of energy over the weekend, so I'm sure your body is working to make up for that and recover, since that's not something you do all the time (to that extreme, I mean, I know you run a lot!). It may just be a factor of that, which might balance itself out over time.

- Water intake is about average... could probably drink a little bit more.
- Sleeping patterns... been sleeping more than normal but had a terrible night's sleep. Maybe that's why it wasn't good this morning.
- Regularity ... yeah that could be it.. I think i emptied myself out on Saturday before the big race on Sunday and since then haven't , eh screw it. I need to poop :(
- Energy - it's possible that after burning nearly 1100 calories that my body is like "NO I NEED THIS FOOD" and isn't willing to give it up.

I'm going to try drinking more water today and head back to the gym tonight for a light walk. Need to get back to the routine. 1 pound shouldn't make a difference over all but I dont' want to be above 150, as that's my goal weight.

It's cold here, y'all! I know I have no right to complain - several of you have been cold and icy for weeks now... but it's just now really starting here and I don't like it. It's been raining all day, and they're put us under a flood warning and a winter storm warning. Expecting lots of sleet tonight, "blizzard like conditions", and possibly 7" of snow. For Memphis, that is a LOT. We are a city that regularly cancels school if it even looks like it might possibly snow... We've had school canceled just because it's below freezing.

DH took off work tomorrow and planned a birthday scavenger hunt where we were going to go all over town to photograph various murals and sculptures that are part of the Memphis Arts Project, all painted/sculpted by local artists and students to help "beautify" the city. He'd picked out 27 of them (since I'm turning 27) and we were going to check out some local hole-in-the-wall eateries near some of them, too. Then we were going to meet up with some friends at a local bar and just hang out. But now it's looking like we might be housebound since it will be too dangerous to get out (it sleets/ices every year, and every year they don't salt the roads until well after they are iced over... And every year, there are wrecks galore because no one here understands how to drive on ice). Sigh.

I guess we'll be spending the weekend finally rearranging the two extra bedrooms instead. DH earns reward points at work and can redeem them on a prize website, and he finally earned enough points to order a rowing machine that he's been wanting, and that came yesterday, so we're planning to take the treadmill out of the smaller extra room and put it into the bigger of the two, along with the rowing machine and the weight bench that is currently taking up garage space. Maybe that will inspire us to use it more! The bigger extra room is currently the craft-room-spare-bedroom-turned-wedding-dumping-grounds, so we're going to really go through all of it, stick the daybed in the attic since we don't anticipate having guests anytime in the foreseeable future, and turn the smaller room into a craft room/office/shipping room. We'll see how that goes!

I had something pressing my mind and I thought this would be a good place to ask. I have a dillema in that there is a race I want to run but they have something called the Athena category for women over 150 lbs in which you get your time clocked with other women in that category and not all the other women. You can choose to race in that category or just be in the open one. The potential to "place higher" is there since the field is smaller...but...
My first reaction is "why is it 150 lbs"...I would cry tears of joy to be down to 150 lbs again..does this mean that is considered big in the running world and should I be sad about that or not care?
My second reaction was "Girl power...let's show those small women what we are made of...rah rah Athena. But also I don't want to put down small women either...because they have to work hard too."
My third reaction was "but what if I am faster than the smaller women and my faster-ness won't count because I'm not in their category"
My fourth reaction was "I pass small girls all the time, and bigger girls pass me all the time, and I pass men and men pass me...why are there weight categories at all??"

Then my friend who runs tri-athalons told me these categories exist in that world because being larger (even if Amazonian and having a ton of muscle) is a hindrance when carrying a heavy frame on a bike and through the water. Ok..I guess I get that.

Literally I am just confused as all get out on how to register. I don't want my weight to be seen as a handicap but I don't want to seem like I'm not proud of myself no matter my weight.

The thing that freaks me out the most is that you have to be weighed when you get there on race day. Will other Athena's get mad at me if I'm like 153 at that point bc I'm too small of a big girl? Will I have a meltdown about being weighed. Will I not like the stigma or will I wear it like a badge of honor that I run despite not being 100 lbs?

See how weirdly confusing one little race category has gotten me?

Thanks for reading...I needed to vent somewhere.

My half in Feb had a category like this and it was such a head scratcher for me at first. Except they called it the Clydesdale and fillies. Yes please compare me to a horse just what I need to be motivates and get going. I think it was more for beginners with extra lbs to shed. I didn't put myself in that category at first out of pride and then realize I don't really need to be in it. One of the things I love about running these days is if you not elite there is no body type. I'm slower but I'm still faster than people who are smaller than me.

They might also want to seem welcoming to all runners and soften the blow for first time races. Like this one has the weight class and you have 6 hours to finish the half so plenty of time is given too.

Stupid categories though.

Well.... honestly this was just something I grabbed at the supermarket because it was an ingredient for a healthy protein cookie and I didn't want to buy a $25/jug of vanilla protein powder that we'd never use. I bought the Bob's Red Mill whey protein..... no flavoring, no sweetening and just 1 SP per serving (1/4 C or 20 g). Not gritty AT ALL either in the cookies or in the smoothie. Obviously because it is unsweetened/unflavored it would probably be yucky plain..... I made my smoothies (last night and today) with unsweetened vanilla almond milk, banana, pineapple, vanilla extract, coconut extract, baby spinach, stevia drops, and ice along with the whey protein. It was 4 SP (1 for the protein, 1 for the milk, 1 for the banana, 1 for the pineapple).

The chocolate powder that I buy for DS is called Orgain organic chocolate protein powder..... it uses rice protein..... it is gluten free, vegan, soy free, dairy free.... (and a few more "free" that I cannot think of right now). And it is really tasty! I've only ever been able to find it at Costco and on Amazon.... and it is usually cheaper at Costco, especially if they have a coupon for it (about twice a year). HTH....................P

I have used Bob's Red Mill for other things (flax seed, chia seed, pizza dough mix) and had no idea they had whey! I will look into Orgain, too - I've seen it at Costco but it wasn't a brand I had heard of so I didn't pay a lot of attention to it. I don't think our Costco had the isolate version, either, and the isolate is much better for you and for building muscle, so we tend to ignore non-isolates by default.

:rotfl: Thank you for the laugh! Don't let that 1lb get you down. I'm sure it'll be gone in no time. :thumbsup2

Thanks! I'm thinking I'll just enter the Open. If I lose the weight then GREAT, and if I don't quite get there...it's not about placing or medaling for me...it's about finishing a new distance. And really I'm just racing myself. I think not picking a category will take the pressure and worry off of me. But I'm still gonna try to take some lbs off anyways because that's why I'm here in this thread afterall :)

Hello everyone! I am late to the party but I have been reading on these WISH forums for a while and I finally decided to try and change my life. I hope you don't mind another visitor?

A bit about me. I am 28 years old. My boyfriend broke up with me last month and I don't have the most supportive family. I have wanted to lose weight for a long time but I told myself if my boyfriend loved me the way I was why bother. Clearly he didn't and I look back and see I was just convincing myself of that to avoid doing the work.

I know it's January and this will seem like a "resolution" but I am hoping it's not. I want to change my life. The problem is I have no idea where to start. There are so many things out there looking to take your money and claim to be the solution. I want to find one that works and I enjoy, then I will stick with it. I am open to any suggestions. I't kinda sad I have to turn to a forum for support but you all seem to really care so I figured it was worth a shot.

P.S.- I have considered running but with roughly 80 lbs to lose I don't think that is an option. At this point a 10K is my goal but as you can see from my screen name it feels like a million miles at this point.

Welcome! We are so happy to have anyone on this thread, especially someone who truly needs support because changing your lifestyle is a lot of work but soooo worth it.

I can relate to the feeling of it being a "resolution". I started veeeery slowly in January of last year and the whole time I was thinking "will I be doing this still in a week? month? year?" the answer is yes! Because you don't just hope that it's not a resolution, you know that you're wanting to make your life better.

I use Weight Watchers (WW) and have had great success. I'm down almost 40 pounds total and 26 with just using WW since Aug '15. I highly recommend it.

As for the running, again, I can relate. When I started in January I was at my heaviest and was definitely walking more than running. I was averaging a 16-17 min mile of run/walk intervals. Which I love and I still do now. I've personally never used C25K but I used an app called Kinetic which I liked and it was a good start. Since then I wasn't really following a plan but kinda loosely structured my own. I did a VERY undertrained 10K last year. I was sore and it took me over an hour, but I did it! You can definitely work your way up to running. Currently, I follow Hal Higdon's plans. I like those plans because it adds a variety and I think I can really feel a difference following those. But if you're not comfortable or confident in running yet then start off walking and work your way up! You can definitely get there and we'll be here to encourage you!

Welcome! I have about the same amount to lose and also want to do some runs again. I have decided to sign up for a local 5k in June to get back into it. Then I think I will sign up for a 10k in September. This will give me something to work towards without pressed for time. My 5k is going to be Run or Dye locally. It's one of those ones that you get covered in colours. :)

I also don't have any support around me. I actually have lots of sabotagers in my life but getting better at ignoring them. I started using my fitness pal and enjoy it. It is free and lots of friendly people on there.

As of today I am past my goal for the month but I will keep going 40.8k/40k

I've noticed minor weight gains this week through MFP and I'm wondering if I am doing something wrong. In the last three weeks I'm up a pound. Still within my goal of maintenance but going "up" is a trend I don't want to see.

What can I do to stop the trend? I'm thinking the exercise calories are not accurate... anyone have some advice on this? I'm a bit bummed today.

Don't forget too, that you are fairly new to maintaining and sometimes it takes some fiddling to get your counts just right.... and of course, as women there are any NUMBER of things that can throw the weight off..... plus you just did a race and you were away from home. All those things can make your body go a little wonky! Keep an eye on it, of course, but do NOT stress about less than a pound. And get yourself some fiber ;) .........................P

Welcome! It's definitely hard to get started, but you did the right thing by deciding to change your life and coming here. The people here are super supportive and great at helping you figure out what to do to make this work for you!

In terms of the running - I just did my first 10K a few weeks ago (at Disney!!). It definitely took a lot of training, and it wasn't easy. But there were people there of all sizes, so I definitely think you shouldn't rule it out just because of your size. Definitely start small - you have to run 1 mile before you can run 6.2 - but I think that with the right training, you can do a 10K! A lot of people start with Couch 2 5K programs, so maybe see if you can find one of those programs and start there?

I'm 28 as well, with next to no support from anyone for this whole health and fitness thing which is why I am super thankful for everyone here. I also started with wanting to drop around 80 pounds, and I was out running and did do a few races. So it can be done even with extra lbs to carry around. You just have to have faith and consistency, and actually enjoy running.

Just lending some cheer-leading. I was in your shoes last year and my resolution finally stuck thanks to the help of people on the WISH board. I started with walking 5k's and then run/walking and then running. It was baby steps and I won't be running my first 10k until later this spring (and it's still kinda scary.) But I'm so happy I took the time to work up to it so that my confidence grew along the way. I loved Couch to 5k and I know lots of people love the Galloway plans as well....and it's ok to stick on the beginning weeks multiple times until you feel comfortable to move on.
Good luck and I'm rooting for you :)

I have been where you are... and this weekend I managed to complete my first half marathon. (Woah!) It's doable, but you have to have the diligence and perseverance to stick with the program.

There are a few things you can do to get ready:
  1. Sign yourself up for a race. It doesn't have to be a Disney race! It can be anything local - start with a 5K distance. This one is actually kind of fun because it involves Frozen Yogurt: http://thefroyorun.com/ . There's also the Hogwarts Running Club that does 6 races per year Virtual Style so you can run it when you're ready and earn that shiny bling! I'm not sure where you're located but there's plenty of races offered through the year.
  2. Couch to 5K. This program is amazing... it teaches you endurance and how to run in intervals up to where you'll be running for 30 minutes straight. And if you don't finish a day's program you can start it up the next time. While it can take 9 weeks to complete, I feel that 12-13 weeks is about average because sometimes the weeks are harder and you may need an extra day or two on a former week to catch up.
  3. Buy some fabulous workout clothes. Wear things that make you feel great and provide adequate support. A good sports bra is key to running long distances - get fitted at your local Nordstrom! (Trust me, I am a 34G and tried to run in the wrong size bra and I just wanted to chop my boobs off. SO PAINFUL). I'm a fan of the Nike dry-fit running pants and the shirts. Wear what is comfortable for you!
  4. Get fitted for the right pair of shoes. Go to a specialty running store like A Snail's Pace, RoadRunner Sports, or other similar locations that specialize in running shoes -- don't go to a Sports Chalet or similar because they don't have the technology or expertise to make sure you're getting the correct fit for your

Let me know if you have more questions about running. I started as a couch potato and now am running 22 half marathons this year :)

22 half marathons in a year. Wow. You are a little crazy. I mean that in a good way of course. I just want to do ONE 10K this year possibly.

Thank you everyone for your responses and your encouragement. I appreciate it.

I have been poking around for a few weeks, since my boyfriend broke up with me. I have read a few of the threads about Disney races. They seem really fun. I also watched a few youtube videos. These things seem HUGE and very intimidating. I love Disney and I think if I sign up for one I will stick to the training because I won't want to fail at something at my happy place. But, I don't know the first thing about how to start.

Also, I am all for signing up for a local race. Where do you find them?

I did my first Disney 10k last year. My sister and I were suppose to do it together and a week before the race she ended up in the ICU. I was so unsure what to do. We couldn't get any money back for our flights, reservations and race of course so I decided to go and my sister wanted me too. I was already nervous even going with my sister. Let me tell you it was intimidating at first and at the start I was so worried. It was AMAZING! Everyone is so positive and friendly. I am not a fast runner but once I realised it didn't matter and nobody cared how fast or slow I was I really enjoyed it. As soon as I was done I knew it wasn't going to be my last if I could help it.

There are running websites that list all the races. I don't know the name of them off the top of my head but I just went on google and typed in 5k or 10k and where I lived and a bunch of websites came up.

I'm glad you decided to go and that you had such a good time. Which Disney race did you do?

@killer6.2 one of the best places to find races is runningintheusa.com

Excellent, thank you. I will take a look today and see what I can find.

I just love the look on her face. "You want me to eat what?"

Let's talk NSV's today! There is SO much more to this journey than just the number on the scale. What non-scale victories have you noticed? Do you crave water? Are there foods that you once loved that you now can't stomach? Do your clothes fit a little more loosely, or do you find you have increased energy levels?

It is going to miss us completely! WOOHOO! And the forecast further south where DD is has changed from 3" on Friday and another 1-3" on Saturday to under an inch for the entire weekend..... we dodged the blow! But I'll be keeping my friends further south in my prayers!

NSV..... making better choices, even on the weekends when I want a splurge............ tracking EVERYTHING, even the splurges...........increasing my intake of healthy fats.

****************

Off to work for a late-start day! Can't beat starting at 10:00 am, then lunch, recess, and a 20 minute student-free planning period..... and home by 3pm! I do have to go to robotics tonight because I have offered to be the "adult-in-charge" (for lack of a better term) during times when the real coaches can't be there to be responsible for unlocking/relocking the building. Since I already work for the school district (and as such I am fingerprinted and background checked), it was kind of a no-brainer to offer to do that this season.

I had a small loss this week that makes me happy, but I'll admit that I am not going to report until tomorrow.... feeling a little gassy/bloated during the last 24 hours and hoping that will pass and tomorrow's number will be even better!

Off to work!........................................P

Tracking everything, even when I know it means the number won't look pretty. I also catch myself thinking "before I started I would have..." a lot. Like "before I started, I would have eaten 12 nuggets, fries, and 4 containers of chick-fil-a sauce and then eaten equally crappy food for dinner...and then repeated it all over again the next day" whereas now if I slip up, I go right back to eating healthy. I think it's a major NSV to recognize how poor your eating habits were before and how much they've changed, even if it doesn't feel like much of a change when you're splurging.

BTW Chick-fil-a is my weakness lol. I feel like I should do a month long detox of fast food in general. It would save money and maybe break the craving that I have for it.

That is a MAJOR, HUGE NSV!! And so true! Once you've learned to pull yourself back from a treat/splurge/overindulgence without continuing down the slippery slope, you are definitely making this a lifestyle change!

And let's face it..... as much as many of us considered ourselves "healthy" eaters before, we didn't get into this situation by overeating kale or apples, right? Sure, maybe we didn't keep a 6-pack of full sized Snickers in the cupboard on the reg, but obviously SOMETHING was wrong, somewhere! (Yes, when I was a kid and we NEVER, EVER had junk food around, I used to DREAM about being an adult and buying my own groceries and keeping candy in the house all the time.... but I never did it, even when I lived alone..... but I still ended up overweight!) If you can ENJOY the occasional splurge/treat/junk food and still get right back on track you are doing something right!! .........P

I love snow, so I'm kinda excited ... but mostly I'm just trying to get rid of my parents. They're supposed to be going on vacation Sunday ... but we'll see what happens. They already switched from a morning flight to an evening flight to avoid the worst of it, now we just have to hope that their flight doesn't get cancelled.

This is an old one, but ... soda tastes disgusting to me. I never loved soda, but in college I used to get a 20-oz bottle of soda with dinner and I enjoyed it. I decided to give up soda a few years ago, and now when I do have a little soda for some reason (which I do occasionally), it tastes like a disgusting sugary mess.
