A YOU Worth Fighting For | January 2016 Weight Loss & Better Living Challenge

Ok I had saved lots of your quotes to comment on but it doesn't want to load!!!

Sooo I'll just post instead.

Halfway reflection about my progress is that my energy levels have really played a big part in my lack of progress - also being school holidays I thought would have my younger 2 harassing me to play but turns out that were perfectly happy with mum having a 'nanna nap' in the middle of the day while that all continued gaming! lol

But I did do lots of activity today - I almost don't want to tell you all because of all the comments about how cold it is where you are. Also, it is already Wednesday the 20th here so I'll give you my 'Woo Hoo Wednesday' as its kind of tied in together - today is my Birthday :rainbow: - we live about a 10 minute drive from the beach and there is a great area just down from the entrance to the river from the ocean that we love to go to with calm water. It is almost the end of summer holidays here for the kids so today we hired a stand up paddle board for 2 hours and had our first ever go at this - I did really good - I only fell of once and that is when my daughter and I were trying to work out how to have her laying down balanced on the front while I stood and paddled lol. I bet I'm going to be sore tomorrow :) So after we returned the board we stayed on as it was just too beautiful but I didn't get any photos as my phone was almost out of charge :( next time we go I will take a pic so you can see how fantastic it is. Anyway we relaxed and played in the water with a Frisbee. All up we were at the beach for about 4 and a half hours.

I must say though that there is way too much of me to squeeze into my swimsuit for my liking - so that just means I need to try harder with my goals.

Well done to those who are doing well and for those who are struggling at bit - I totally understand.

Okay so this is my foam roller. http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=34451176 As was said it's a trigger point roller. There's no mystery to use it, you literally roll your muscles out. It hurts, a lot, but after you just feel so much better. Someone I know swears by the Rumble Roller brand but they seem a little to hardcore for me. I wouldn't go near the ones that are just smooth and foam they won't do the job quite the same. A lot of runners in the podcasts I listen to swear by it for quicker recovery.

:thanks: so much for this! I just ordered a trigger point roller off amazon. I had no idea they existed. I have a generical black roller so this new one will be a nice addition. I ordered a shorter one thinking it would fit in my duffel bag when I travel, I hope

:bday: What a great day!

Well, I stepped on the scale today and was pleasantly surprised to see a loss that I had hoped to see last week. I am not going to be home on Friday. Here's the kicker, I leave Thursday night for a three day scrapbooking weekend and the food will be out of control. I packed one workout outfit, and warned the girls not to pick on me, LOL. Saturday's workout is a metabolic workout that can be done without equipment, so I need to do it it's only 20 minutes! My workouts this week are superset intervals and they are killer!

There's no way I will get my steps in this weekend, it's way too cold and the accommodations we are staying at have no cardio equipment. I may pack my shoes to take a walk outside if possible though, these old bones would appreciate a little moving and shaking

Anyhoo, I'm off to the gym, I hope everyone has a great day on plan,

Happy Birthday @4Mickeys

@ohMom I also scrapbook and never have had the chance to go away for a few days to do it but I do know what is at the all day crops. Good for you for bringing your workout clothes. Have a great time.

Is it too late to join? I actually just started getting serious about weight loss and my goals 10 days ago. I'm tracking through MFP (@Calimomx2) and so far so good. When I stepped on the scale on Monday I was down 6.5 lbs! This is probably the first time ever that I'm doing this by eating real food and tracking. I've made many attempts in the past using different programs or fad/extreme diets and nothing worked. My birthday is actually in just a few days and this is the last year I want to be facing another birthday weighing way more than I need or want to be! I'm not looking for a quick fix, I'm looking for a life change that sticks and lasts forever! :)

Happy Birthday @4Mickeys!

I have a question for all the runners that live in the north. How do you run outside in the winter? Do you have different running shoes for the snow, ice, slush.....? Starting thinking about the future and I can't stand running for any amount on a treadmill. But I think about training for a run next winter and think what do I do when it gets to be winter. It may seem odd to ask this but I know with just walking outside I wear boots and am worried about falling on my butt,LOL. I always start in the spring and go through to the fall then when the snow hits I attempt the treadmill at the gym but can't stand it so I stop running so then I am back at the start again in spring. Any insight on winter running from people I would love to hear. Thanks

I agree with @SarahDisney. I find that my regular shoes do fine in the snow, it's the ice that's the problem. So if I run outside then I try to avoid any patches of ice, either by running temporarily in the street or by switching to the snow in the grass.

As for other gear, fleece lined tights and jackets. I also usually wear a pair of thin gloves. And then I have a hat contraption that can cover my neck and the bottom part of my face as well as my head and ears which works well. If it's not that cold then I have another headband that just covers my ears.

:welcome: knkmom!! It is never too late to join us! Congratulations to your fabulous start with 6.5 pounds!

@DVCFan1994 Ugh I was in CT all day for training so I missed the cold. I have a run tomorrow so we'll see about that. It's just a half hour though.

Thank you so much! I've been wanting one for a while so hopefully within the next couple of months I can get one! My calf muscles are always sore and tight so I know that a foam roller is exactly what I need.

Hey Friends!! Sorry I forgot to warn you that I'd be away from my computer for about 48 hours. I had to spend some time helping DD get packed up and of course back to school and unpacked and set up! Phew! It was SO cold and of course she is on the ocean and the wind NEVER lets up there and it was absolutely painful to walk around outside! But we did it! Fortunately since she was returning from a semester abroad, she was able to move in 24 hours ahead of returning fall students, so we didn't have to deal with hundreds of other cars trying to unload and crowded hallways, etc.

Eating was difficult, but we made some good choices and used a few of our weekly SP for a treat or two (we felt we deserved it after all that work!). And the only day I actually ended up going over my daily SP was last night!~ I had a late night chocolate craving..... which is actually really unusual for me, but I had one small piece, tracked it and moved on without (much) guilt!

Now that life is settling down a bit with DD back to school and the men super busy with robotics every day, I plan to start hitting the TM a bit more often AND finding some time to clean out the house. I look forward to having some EMPTY SPACE at home.... so tired of the stress that clutter causes me!

Off to answer the QOTD!........P

It is NEVER to late to join! You'll find everyone in this group is wonderful and positive. If you're committed to making changes we're here for you! Happy early birthday!!

I have to say I love character meals. Chip and Dale at Garden Grill are always fun. Tusker house for breakfast is great also. Goofy at the character spot last time was so funny. We have a soft spot for any Donalds also. Mexican Donald is great.

Walked outside this morning cold and winy but done. 3.2k. The whole trail was ice under the dusting of snow.

Sorry about the ice and snow, but what a lovely trail!

HALF MARATHON: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

I didn't cross the starting line until nearly 40 minutes after the first corral crossed - so that caused a lot of waiting/standing and rising temperatures that earlier corrals didn't experience. Mile 9 had a huge hill that nearly wiped me out for the remainder of the race - but overall a great course and a lot of fun! As this was my first HM... It's a personal record! :D

This experience taught me a lot about perseverance, endurance, and patience. Also the pic with my brother before the race... I need to educate my husband on how to take photos. he's not so good, therefore we look terrible :)

Side note: Yes, my shirt says "In Training for the Tinker Bell 10K". Appropriate for today's run, eh? Skip the 10K and go right for the Half!

Congratulations! What an accomplishment!!

Good morning, friends!! I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend and that we are all surviving the cold! We didn't get above freezing here yesterday, and our first "winter weather advisory" is set for tonight, so the "I" word is being thrown around a LOT. Ugh. How many days until spring?

QOTD for Tuesday, January 19, 2016

We are now officially more than 50% of the way through the month, so let's have a little mid-month reflection.

How are you doing on your goals? I don't just mean what is your progress percentage so far. Are you struggling, and if so, what is derailing you? Are you finding that you set your goal too low? Too high? Are your methods of achieving your goal working out like you expected, or are you discovering that you aren't seeing the results like you thought you should? Are you feeling good about your progress/goal?

Feeling good about this month's progress so far. And it is amazing to me how DILIGENTLY I can follow the plan when someone else is "watching" me. Having to set an example for DD (we are doing the plan together) this month has really kept me on track! I'll have to give her at least partial credit for my progress this month. But it also serves as a reminder to me that all of those little "slips and nibbles" that I don't track that are actually inhibiting my progress! And I love the reminder from one of our friends here that the WEEKEND (i.e. Fri-Sun) is actually about HALF of our week! Yikes! I will be the first to admit that over time I have allowed my "splurge/treat meal" to turn into a "splurge day" and then, ocassionally a "splurge weekend'! NO reason for that....especially if there isn't any kind of celebration to think about!

While precentage-wise I'm doing really well, I do find that I'm struggling with WW and smart points now. I've been going waaaay over on my weekly points for weeks now. Last week I didn't go over but this week I'm already over -37 points! I know what I'm doing. I'm eating crap on the weekends. And on Sunday I had a terrible binge-fest that made me feel so horrible and ashamed. Obviously, this week I can't do anything more than not dig myself further in the hole and continue to work out. So next month I'm definitely going to be focusing on staying with my weekly plan so that I stop going over.

I'm so sorry you are feeling ashamed.... but I can relate. But how about putting a different spin on it? How about LEARNING from the binge-fest? What caused it, what did you eat, what were you feeling? Are you sick? Tired? Stressed? Sad? Bored? What can you do differently next time you are feeling that way? Do you need to keep certain foods out of the house? Do you need to be sure that there is always a healthy option available for snacking? I try to remind my WW members who come in for the "one-millionth" time that every moment of "dieting" before this has been a learning experience leading up to SUCCESS!

It seems like you do a few things right, at least, that you can be proud of. You TRACKED your SP.... even though you went overboard. And you came on here to "come clean" and start fresh. And by the sound of it you are hitting the gym and making a plan for success in the near future. Those are ALL things to be proud of, right? Even though you may not have a SCALE VICTORY this week, you can celebrate those Non-scale victories just as much!

Eh. Disney threw me off. I wasn't eating great before I left, and I mostly stopped exercising. At Disney I did okay, but not great. Once I got back ... I had a really hard time adjusting to being back in the real world, and while I'm getting better, I still haven't gotten my eating and exercise back under control. I really need to work on that.

Also, I was supposed to run this morning, but decided I didn't want to run outside if it felt like negative temperatures. And then I decided to sleep in and didn't hit the treadmill because I didn't get out of bed until 9. I might try to get on the treadmill in the afternoon, but we'll see. Oh, and while making my snack (Starbucks Instant Latte - my cold weather treat), I had two pieces of chocolate and a handful of granola. Not my best day so far.

I'm going to tell you to read what I posted above for dsnyfn1022......

I am doing really well towards my goal on here plus I am sticking with using MFP and loving it. I think next month I will set my goal a little higher. The only struggle here is the weather. -10 without the windchill today so I opted to go mall walking. 4.5k around and around I went :) Anything minus double digits I am not going outside to walk.

37k/40k

You are FAR braver than I am! When it hits below freezing I get wimpy and head inside!

Oh man, I am struggling this month. My birthday was the first derail (two separate fancy dinners - one with in laws, then one with mine). Then my gerbil died (on my birthday nonetheless) so there was some sad eating, then this weekend was an inlaw's birthday party where there was no "food" just mainly fried appetizers. And THEN I started feeling sick even before that birthday party so I've been fighting off a cold pretty hardcore so that I can be well for Disney this weekend. Add in some PMS and I am just all over the place. I haven't exercised since my birthday. I don't think my goal was the problem-- I am the problem. I just was NOT motivated last week and it's carried over into this week. The good news is that I have been eating well outside of one of the birthday meals and that appetizer party. We have been doing Blue Apron for dinner and eating at home for lunch! Silver linings!

Well that just hit me like a ton of bricks! Haha! I totally forget that "weekends" count for so much of the week sometimes too!

Happy Birthday! I'm so sorry about your gerbil.... they are cute little creatures! I don't mind rodents at all..... DD had guinea pigs for several years and I found that I grew to really enjoy them! But don't ask me about reptiles...... eww!

Love that you can see the silver linings during a struggling time!

Since it is still Wednesday here, I don't think it is to late to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! So jealous of your beach time..... I'll take the sun and warm air over below zero windchills any time!

SO envious of your scrapbooking time! Other than a few pages in November, I haven't even thought about scrapping for MONTHS and MONTHS.... which is sad because it is truly my hobby of choice!! Enjoy it and BE AN INSPIRATION to your friends when you get in your exercise, despite the situation!!

SO happy to have a new friend with us! Welcome!! Happy you are looking to make a life style change !

********************

Okay friends! I'm going to call myself caught up. Tummy is rumbling but I don't have lunch for an hour! I had plenty of SP for breakfast, but the majority of it was in the form of avocado and while it is delicious and a healthy fat, it isn't particularly filling. I have a 1 SP cheese stick in my bag, but my bag is in another room and I am proctoring a small group right now, so I cannot leave. Oh well. Lentil soup for lunch will go well with the cheese stick, right?? I'll be scrambling to get a dinner together tonight though..... I just ran out of time and energy to plan/cook any more meals after I planned what the men would eat for the two evenings I was away (Monday night I stayed overnight with DD and Tuesday evening is my work night). I have a cauliflower that needs to be eaten, but I don't have everything for a cauliflower fried "rice"..... but I think I'll make a cauliflower hash and serve with eggs! Sounds yummy to me.... and I think the men will enjoy it!

TTYL.......................P

Thank you so much! I love the support :). "Fortunately" it was one binge meal and I dusted myself off after that meal and have been good since then! In the past, I would have said that the whole day was shot and I'd start over the next day or I would have let that behavior continue throughout the week (like "Oh I'm already 37 in the hole...what's another 3? 5? 20?") but I haven't! Last night I ate my dinner super early so I was hungry again by 8. Instead of eating points I didn't have I cut up a pear and microwaved an apple with equal and cinnamon and called it a day! So thank you for the NSV reminder! This is definitely progress. And I've learned that no matter if you've lost 4 lbs or 40 lbs every day you have to make conscious decisions to eat well. Every day forever. But if you slip up one day then it doesn't have to turn into another day, week, month, year of bad eating. Just move on!

I'll be honest..... last night's WW meeting was definitely a WOOHOO for me! It reminded me WHY I work for WW (and I can assure you it is NOT for the paycheck or the wonderful benefits!! ;) ). I had a member hit her lifetime, so we got to celebrate with her..... and when I asked her what she would say to others was really helpful this time.... she said her friends in the group! And then I had another member who got her 25 lb medal and her 10% award.... and when I asked her what has kept her motivated this time and she said it was ME! That really choked me up! And then I had an orientation for two new members and they absolutely could NOT STOP gushing over my before/after photos and kept telling me how inspiring it was to see those and to see ME in real life! And one of them confessed that when she walked in the door she was DISCOURAGED to meet "another skinny WW leader" (doesn't she know that we all work for the company because we've lost weight on the program???) and she was so excited to find out that I had lost almost exactly what she needs to lose!

I will be honest and say I glowed all the way home about what a great meeting it was (and not just because they said nice things to me!). Now if I could have MORE weeks like that!!:thumbsup2 ....................P

I am not surprised to hear that! If you bring half of the positiveness and encouragement you bring to these threads, I think you would already be a fabulous group leader for WW!

Can I just woohoo about the fact that it's Wednesday and the work day is almost done? Lol, rough week. The battery in my car died due to the cold weather (this was on Saturday). DH's battery in his car died yesterday. And then our dishwasher kicked the bucket. We're renters so we don't have to pay to get the new one but it's going to take 10-12 business days to get the new one...

A real woohoo for the day is that I stepped on the scale this morning because I wanted to see the damage that I'd done with the binge-fest and I've actually lost .5 pounds from last Saturday. It's exciting because I have 3 more days of good choices and working out to really make a difference. Hoping for a solid pound off this weigh-in!

:welcome: knkmom !!

Pamela, I'm not surprised at all either at the much deserved kudos you got at your meeting!!
