A video of the Fort from 1976

Thanks Steve!

Observations:

1. No paved walkways from the golf cart parking lot down by the beach up past Pioneer Hall.

2. Cannons in front of Trails End (2 I saw) before folks got weird/politically correct.

3. Settlement Trading Post looks the same.

4. The Settlement Depot for the FWRR was on the Pioneer Hall side near loop 700. You can see the original track curving in close to 700 as the train pulls out of the station.

5. The train ran RIGHT NEXT TO the Meadow Trading Post. In fact, the FWRR CM breakroom was in the Meadow TP down the hallway where the bathrooms are now.

Interesting find, Jets70. Thanks for sharing.

That really caught my attention Ed. Seeing the Meadows Trading Post now, hard to imagine a train running right past the front doors. Myself, the DW, DS and DD so much enjoy camping at the Fort (and visiting the parks :)), when I watched this video I was a little sad that we did not experience the Fort "back then". There were a couple of other videos on the site with video of the Fort during the early days of WDW. There are also a couple of really good videos about River Country.

Thanks so much! What memories!
Our ds loved that train (dh too). If I remember right it was $.50 to ride it even though it was a form of transportation.

Guess it was very impractical and definitely wasn't paying it's way, but we really missed it when it was gone.

The Fort was 'much' smaller then, the beach was open, River Country was fun. Rules were a lot less 'stringent', probably because most people (and their children) seemed to have more of a built in (taught) sense of do's and don'ts. Was a very cozy, warm and fuzzy place!!
Wasn't near as busy as today, though we still love it now too.

That child that the lady was carrying is over 40 yrs old now.
Great footage, first I have ever seen of the train in front of the trading post, can you imagine that in todays society ?

Thank you for showing us what the Fort looked like 40 + yrs. ago. The fort is my #1 place to camp, just wish is wasn't 1200 miles away. If God willing & our home sells soon, we will be able to go more than once a year to the best place in this world to camp!!
