A thought for the Day

Wow, DD, I really like that!

WOW! What a great thread, I put this in my favorites list.

Thanks everyone. :)

I agree S.C. this thread is a great one! So many wonderful thoughts have been added here recently :)

Feelings of worth can flourish only in an atmosphere where individual differences are appreciated, mistakes are tolerated, communication is open, and rules are flexible--the kind of atmosphere that is found in a nurturing family.
~Virginia Satir

Ask effectively

If you wish to receive value from others, be willing and able to offer value in return. For the most effective way to ask is to offer.
There is no end to what you have to offer. You can offer your time, your experience, your expertise, your opinion.

You can offer your skills, your knowledge, your insight, your understanding, your companionship and so much more. Your life is brimming with value that is yours to offer in return for the value that you seek.

Begging, whining, complaining and demanding will earn you little more than the contempt of others. Offering something of true and meaningful value, on the other hand, can bring you just about anything you desire.

You deserve the best that life has to offer. And the way to attain it is by giving the best that you have to offer.

-- Ralph Marston

You start preparing when you're thirty for the person you'll be at eighty.

--Janice Clark

We can't get away from ourselves, at least not entirely. Who we were at
ten and twenty and forty and fifty remains as threads in our tapestries.
Many of us shudder because some details of our personal panorama
weren't so very pretty. But that's the way life is. We are what we are.
And yet, we have examples of favorable changes, too. How we were
never kept us from becoming who we wanted to be. This truth
continues to reign in our lives.

We all know women and men who continue to be enthused about even
the tiny happenings in the passing of a day. A bird's flight from the
porch to a nearby tree to feed its young, the laughter of children passing
the house on their way home from school, the family reunions, large or
small, bring smiles and memories that comfort. Probably we envy those
folks, unless we happen to be them already. In either case, imitating
others or serving as their role models helps to strengthen our positive
responses to life's details. No matter how old we are, there is still joy to
be felt. And there is still time to change and grow.

There is no rule that says I have to be and think and act the same way
my whole life. Today is a clean slate. I can be who I want to be.

Experience is a wonderful thing. It enables us to recognize a mistake when we make it again.

The universe is made up of stories, not atoms.
--Muriel Rukeyser

There was once a storyteller who told many people of her life.
They listened and heard their own stories in hers. Hearing her
story, they didn't feel so lonely anymore. Hearing about someone
else who had lost things and people she loved, who had felt
lonely, scared, and unsure of herself, let them feel less crazy
when similar things happened to them.

Because of the healing they felt through hearing someone else's
story, some of the listeners decided to become storytellers
themselves. As they recounted their stories, they found that
letting out secrets that had bothered them for years freed them
to feel good about who they were and who they had always wanted
to be.

Ask yourself, what secrets can I share today?

Risks worth taking

The fact that something involves risk does not necessarily mean that it must be avoided. It means that it must be approached with clarity, commitment, understanding and preparation. If you attempt to completely avoid every possibility of failure, then you never get anything accomplished. And that ends up being the biggest failure of all.
Every single day involves some kind of risk. You can minimize the risk, but you cannot avoid it altogether, because to avoid risk is to avoid the richness of life itself. There are physical risks, emotional risks, financial risks, business risks, social risks and others. Many of those risks, when navigated carefully, sensibly and responsibly, can lead to great rewards.

Some risks are indeed foolish, while others are indeed foolish to avoid. The way to tell the difference is to look beyond the risk to the potential reward it can bring.

It pays to be careful, and it also pays not to be overly paranoid. Accept those risks that are worth taking, and enjoy the rewards that they can bring.

-- Ralph Marston

Don't listen to those who say, "It's not done that way." Maybe it's not, but maybe you will. Don't listen to those who say, "You're taking too big a chance." Michelangelo would have painted the Sistine floor, and it would surely be rubbed out by today. Most importantly, don't listen when the little voice of fear inside of you rears its ugly head and says, "They're all smarter than you out there. They're more talented, they're taller, blonder, prettier, luckier and have connections…" I firmly believe that if you follow a path that interests you, not to the exclusion of love, sensitivity, and cooperation with others, but with the strength of conviction that you can move others by your own efforts, and do not make success or failure the criteria by which you live, the chances are you'll be a person worthy of your own respect.

-- Neil Simon

Among those whom I like or admire, I can find no common denominator, but among those whom I love, I can: all of them make me laugh.

~ W. H. Auden

You can tell a person's true character by what they do when no one is around to see them.

Your job today

Your job today is to change the world, and to do it in your own special way. Your job today is to move the world closer to the best it can be by pushing yourself toward the best you can be.
The world will be different at the end of the day because of the way you have lived. The world will change during this day because of the thoughts you have focused upon and the actions you have taken.

There is no one else who can do your job for you. There is no one else who can give to life the unique value that you're able to give.

It is an awesome responsibility and a magnificent opportunity. For the more you give of yourself, the more life will resemble the best vision you have for it.

That is your job today, to give the best of what you have and to truly make life better for the effort. Do that job well, and the rewards will be rich indeed.

-- Ralph Marston

""To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin."

Cardinal Bellarmine, 1615, during the trial of GALILEO

Positive perspective

Everything you do makes a difference. Every thought you think, every comment you make, every action you take, in some way will change things for you and your world.
You move through life, leaving consequences in your wake. And the quality of life is determined largely by the nature of those consequences. Even the smallest things make a difference. And those small things can quickly add up.

That's why your attitude and your outlook on life truly matter so much. Because they have a powerful influence over what kind of difference you are making, in the big decisions and the small ones too.

See the world as a beautiful place, filled with positive possibilities. And without even realizing it, your actions, your thoughts, your consequences will take on the color of that positive perspective.

Everything, every moment, every person, every stirring in your heart matters. Let yourself love and value life, and be overjoyed at the positive difference that each of your moments can make.

-- Ralph Marston

Your rainbow will come shining through.
No matter how your heart is grieving, if you keep believing
The dream that you wish will come true.
