A Surprise Christmas, 15th Anniversary, We're taking your MOTHER??? Trip- 3-8Finished

Hi! Joining in! Looks like we were there at the same time :)

Curious to read your next post and find out if the "stormy" forecast affected your plans for the day

Enjoying the report so far! I am trying to convince DH that our next trip should be right after Thanksgiving so we can enjoy the Christmas festivities. He's mulling it over. Can't wait to hear more!

Hi Melanie!! I just found your TR and I'm excited to read it as we're planning a December trip to WDW this year!! What dates were you there? (sorry if I missed that but I couldn't seem to find it) I loved the video of your kiddos opening their gift--they seemed so stunned--it was too cute!! :goodvibes I loved reading about MVMCP and your pictures are beautiful!! I cannot WAIT to see all of this in December!! I can't wait to read more!! popcorn::

Great mojo!

And the weather mostly cooperated!

I am not a parade person, but I'd actually like to see the this parade

Mojo was definitely in full force that night. I was sooo worried!

The parade was really beautiful, but we like parades. I guess it's in our south Louisiana blood. Parade?! We're there! LOL

Cool. I'll be discussing Friday's weather shortly. :)

I think that would be an excellent time to go! The crowds should be low as I'm sure tons of people would be leaving from the Thanksgiving holiday and all the Christmas festivities should be in full force!

Yay! for a Dec. trip this year! We arrived Dec. 17 and left Dec. 24. We wanted to be home for Christmas and also wanted to avoid the heaviest crowds, but couldn't miss a lot of work/school. We also had to arrive by the 17th to get free dining which saved us more money than the 40% off pin we had on our room. We also were celebrating our 15th anniversary which was the 16th - the day we left. Glad to have you along.

So glad you made it safely, despite the trouble with MIL! :thumbsup2

The MVMCP is so much fun; DH and I had a blast when we were there!

I'll preface this update by saying "NO SCHOOL TODAY!" :cool1: After the unusually cold weather for days in a row, our parish had several schools report pipes busting and with everyone letting their faucets run, the water pressure is down. So our whole parish is under a boil advisory which means - NO SCHOOL - which means no work for DH or ME!!!:cool1::thumbsup2
We had a very busy weekend as DS turned 5 yesterday and we had a Star Wars birthday party complete with Jedi Lightsaber training. I also make DS's cakes because of his peanut allergy and NOTHING went right with that cake. Everthing ended up ok and he had a great time! Now I am staying in my pjs and working on this TR. Maybe later we'll go spend some of that bday money that's burning a whole in his pocket already.

On with the show:
After not enough sleep, we woke up and turned on the weather. Very stormy weather expected soon at Disney World - GRRRR! This was our "all day Magic Kingdom very planned out first day with MIL" day. With 2 kids and a 73 year old MIL, I didn't want to get stuck in the storms or not be able to breathe in a crowded store while we wait for all this weather to pass. It was already pouring down so we decided to let the kids sleep. :sad2: If it had just been DH and me, we'd have gone but oh well. This definitely throws off my whole day. So I continuously watch the weather waiting for a break in the radar.

Can you believe the big line of storms split and went AROUND Disney World!???!! I was happy but aggravated that we stayed in all at the same time. Disney is sooo magical - they even control the weather! :lmao: We finally get out around 10am (not so late I know but still throwing my day off), and ride the bus to Magic Kingdom. It's still drizzling but hey, better than pouring or storming!!!

First thing we saw was Pinnochio in Town Square and because we had never met him before and thinking our day was screwed anyway, we stood in a not so long line to meet him.

While waiting in line we realized that we were in front of Tony's restaurant! Here's a picture of the walkway in front of it.

IMG_0567.jpg

When we left, we heard music (like parade music) and lo and behold we were in the right place at the right time because here comes the Move It, Shake It, Celebrate It parade. We walked right up to the hub and got great spots to watch it right at the beginning. Really cute and really short - Here are some pics:

IMG_0579.jpg

We hit Adventureland first with MIL in tow thinking Fantasyland might be crowded. We rode Pirates - walk on and Jungle Cruise (in the day time) - walk on! We decided to skip the Mountains in Frontierland as we had our fill the night before and MIL would have to wait as we rode. We scooted right over to Fantasyland and actually got a lot done! Peter Pan, Small World, Snow White, Winnie the Pooh, and Tea Cups (me and kids).

IMG_0599.jpg

We needed to hit the classics with MIL since she didn't come to the party the night before and we didn't mind. She really was on her best behavior ;) and kept up with us. We ate lunch at Pinnochio Village Haus hoping to get a seat by the Small World windows. No luck - but it was a nice rest. A must-see for us today was Princess Tiana's Showboat Jubilee. We made a point of going to see the movie the weekend before the trip so that the kids would "know" the characters. We watched it from the bridge by the Mountains in Frontierland. Living where we do and being proud of our culture and heritage, it was wonderful to have everyone enjoying the familiar sights and sounds of home. I videoed the whole thing and of course DH took lots of pics. It was a great show! I wish they would keep it around.

We walked to Frontierland to wait for the parade and saw Jesse & Woody right next to the Dole Whip stand.

IMG_0607.jpg

We snagged a bench to wait for the day parade. The kids had Mickey Ice Cream bars - Yum! While DH, MIL, and I had Dole Whips!!!! Yay for Dole Whips!!! The sun kept trying to shine while the rain kept coming off and on. We didn't want to lose our spots so we just used our umbrellas and jackets. I kept thinking....what if they cancel the parade and I wasted all this time sitting here??? But although a little bit late, here came the parade! Cute as all Disney parades are.

(continued on next post)

After the parade, we rode Haunted Mansion. I'll insert right here that at every ride we spent our wait time determining who would sit with who. With 4, its not so bad because we take turns with each child. With 5, it's like, who will fit together to do 2 and 3 or will it be 2, 2, and 1 and then who will ride by themself, etc. MIL really didn't care but we hated for her to be by herself. The kids would complain they wanted to ride with us and we would have to convince them to take turns and Mawmaw came to see them have fun at Disney, etc. It all worked out but just thought I'd mention it.
After Haunted Mansion, DD and I rode Space Mountain while DH, DS, and MIL rode TTA and got to meet Buzz.

IMG_0580.jpg

It was DD's first ride on Space Mountain and I hadn't ridden it in about 20 years so we were very excited especially since they had refurbished it. The queue is really fun except you have to keep moving in the middle of your game. DD REALLY wanted to ride this ride but was nervous about sitting by herself. We discussed the options - her sitting behind me so that she could see me or touch me if she got scared, or her sitting in front of me and I could put my hand on her shoulder. When we loaded, we saw that one of us would be in the back seat. She decided she would sit in front of me. Space Mountain is a ROUGH ride! Much rougher than I remembered it. It didn't really make me sick but I kept getting that same - I need to duck - feeling. DD loved it! I'm so proud of my usually chicken but loves to ride roller coasters DD! DH, DS, and MIL were waiting in the gift shop at the end of the ride and got to see our picture. We then decided that Toontown might not be so crowded at this time of the day. One goal was to meet Tinkerbell. We also wanted to take in as much of Toontown as we could beings the big overhaul may be around the corner. I had planned to be at Toontown ropedrop this morning so I had to adjust our schedule and so far...not too bad! We walked into the big toy store (I forget the name) and don't see any line for the characters. I'm thinking either WOW or they all went home??? We walk down the Fairies line and the line in way in there. Yay! This short little line ended up being like 30-40 minutes! I swear - the princess line would take like 3 groups of 15 people while our line would take 1 group of 5! It took sooooo long. I'm glad we waited because I will never do it again. Can you imagine if the line was out in the store!??!!! We were able to meet SilverMist, Tink, and Rosetta who was adorable and such a talker! Notice my hair has been in the damp, rainy weather - yuck!

IMG_0793.jpg

Then we visited Mickey's and Minnie's houses. We were losing daylight fast so the pictures are not so great. I kept taking them though because I was afraid I wouldn't have another opportunity. We were very excited to meet both Mickey and Minnie in the Judge's Tent.

The kids wanted to ride Goofy's Barnstormer - our first time. The line was really short so we went on it it 2 or 3x's in a row. It was getting very close to the 7pm closing time as the very last MVMCP was about to begin so we started making our way to the front of the park. The kids reminded us that we hadn't ridden Dumbo so we quickly tried to get in line. My watch said 6:55pm but the cast member was already attempting to close off the line to non-party guests. She was nice enough to let us in before she closed it off and we got to spend our wait speaking with this really nice cast member from out of the country (can't remember where) who had to follow the end of the "regular" line. After Dumbo, we took a few pics on the way out as we saw a few of the party events starting. We were not trying to hang out but trying to make our way through the sold out crowds. Cast members were very visibly checking wristbands and directing non-party guests to the exits. We couldn't even take the less crowded short cut through the stores without a wristband.
We took the bus back to Pop where we finally at supper at Pop. I've never had any complaints about Pop's food. We didn't mind eating any of our meals there. We took showers and finally unpacked. Glad it was an early night as we were really tired and had an early ADR the next morning. Overall, the late morning and early closing didn't really affect our day. We had a wonderful full day!

Sounds like a great day! Figuring out who is going to ride with who is always a joy, isn't it. My kids always want to ride with us too, my mom ends up feeling slighted. We have four kids, so one ends up with her eventually, but sometimes they make it seem like it's the end of the world if they have to ride with Grammy!

Loving your report! Im glad you had a good first day with MIL, hopefully they will all go smoothly :) I can empathize with In-law problems....this past Thanksgiving I was 7 months pregnant with a really bad cold and still made almost all the food (MIL is a terrible cook and the whole family requests my food :scared1:) and FIL complained that the food wasnt ready at 2:30pm which is what he was told and all he wanted was the turkey anywayz( it was 2:40pm, the food needed another 15 minutes or so) so I told him his turkey was ready and he should go eat and choke on it! :rotfl: :rotfl2::lmao: As mean as it was it felt really good to say it! I stormed outside and he actually came and apologized...I was so surprised! Maybe it has something to do with me carrying his frist grandchild, he should be :worship: me! :rotfl:

I thought they would LOVE riding with Mawmaw but I think (like in the case of Toy Story Mania) it was the fact that Mawmaw wouldn't play along. She was just there for the ride. :-)

That is tooo funny. You are right - :worship: is in order! Sometimes people just need to be put into their place which is hard when you are not a confrontational person - like me. When it happens though, people tend to step back. Good for you for sticking up for yourself!

So glad that it turned out to be such a great day!! And that the rain wasn't too bad! We were there in May and it rained everyday ALL day while we were there! It was insane but we made the best of it!! :goodvibes It looks like you got to meet a lot of characters and ride a lot of rides!!!

I saw sunshine in a few your pictures:thumbsup2

And you got a full day in regardless of your late start. That's a good thing.

Oh no! One more reason NOT to go during the summer if humanly possible - rain! I'm glad you guys made the best of it! We did get a lot done and the sun kept peeking through. It just made for messy hair though! :)

Yeah - a little sun here and there. NOT the storms that were predicted. I was so mad that we had waited but oh well. We did get LOTS done. At the end of the day, I was happy and the kids got extra rest too.

You were really able to get a LOT done, considering your late start and the MVMCP! :thumbsup2 Looking forward to reading more!

Hey, Sis!!! Enjoying the trip report, Tyler read it last night and we had fun laughing @/with DBIL again (splash mountain :rotfl:). Only b/c we can totally see his face during it, but very proud that he did it :cool1:.

Enjoy your day off (again)!!!!

Soooo glad it worked out that way. We lucked out that the crowds hadn't arrived yet.

Hey!!! Kevin read it last night also and we were rolling! :rotfl:

So guess who had another PJ day because of low water pressure and the cold......meeeee!:cool1: But nothing can last forever so my pj days end today. We go back tomorrow so I wanted to get in another update.

We had an early evening on Magic Kingdom Friday so we were well rested for our early ADR's this morning. We had an 8:20 ADR at Donald's Safari Breakfast at the Tusker House - our first time eating here. MIL would not be joining us for this meal as she decided to join us on our trip too late for me to add her to the reservation. I tried a few more times for any cancellations but nothing. We told her it would be a wonderful chance for her to get some extra rest. All she had to do was ride the bus labeled Animal Kingdom, follow the herd of people to the entrance, use her ticket to get in the gate and call us with her cell phone. We would come get her. I cannot express to you how much she really didn't want to do this but I explained that if she came with us, she'd have to wait outside the gate by herself until we were finished with breakfast or the park opened whichever came first. She was so afraid of getting lost. Which is kinda' funny to me beings that our hotel room was on the inside of the building that was right next to the parking lot. If you went around the building, you could see the busses! Every bus has a label of where it is going and there are signs by each line. ???? I swear she even asked the bus drivers to make sure they were bringing us where we wanted to go. :lmao: Like we couldn't read??? Anyway, it was also VERY cold that morning as the rain came with a cold front and I think she realized meeting us there later would be the best thing.

So we start our morning by ourselves. We drove to AK today because we have ADRs at Hoop Dee Doo tonight. I didn't want to depend on Disney transportation when I didn't know how long it would take us to get there. The walk from our vehicle to the entrance was torture as it was extremely windy and cold but I wasn't going to stand still and wait for a tram as we weren't parked very far away.

The tree was very pretty and totally on theme.

Once inside the park, we rented stroller (one of the few we used this trip) and found our way to Tusker House. There we were greeted outside (brrrr) and took pictures with Donald. We were quickly seated inside and received the best juice I think I have ever had. It was delicious! We (of course) reminded our server our DS's peanut allergy and he had the chef show me around the buffet. Thank God for Disney. It is one of the few places my son can eat out at restaurants because basically...they know their stuff. The chef told me that every 6 months they go to school to get updates and learn more about food allergies. He also sympathized with me because he had food allergies in his own family. Disney has always been so understanding and accomodating and NEVER treated us like we were a problem or a hassle because of his food allergy. They helped to make our meals much less stressful. So we had a wonderful breakfast full of delicious food and wonderful character interaction. We met a few nice people there that were staying at Pop as well. The kids even participated in a little parade around the dining area. Here are some pics:

We decided to wait to go on the safari until MIL was with us. We had gone on our Mardi Gras trip and to be honest, I could take it or leave it. So we walk toward Expedition Everest and the standby was 20 minutes. None of us had ever been on EE and I REALLY wanted to go. Last trip, I didn't ride because I had no one to ride with. This time, DD should have come with me but she chickened out. I have no idea why except the fear of the unknown but she walked onto Space Mountain blind and very confident. :confused3 Anyway, I wasn't leaving AK for a 2nd time without riding so I went on by myself. The theming of the queue was really great. I met some teenagers in line and asked them about the ride. They had an odd number also so I rode with one of them. Expedition Everest is THE best roller coaster I've ridden and I will NEVER miss it again! Totally LOVED it! When we got to the broken tracks right before you go backwards, I had to say outloud that I can't believe I'm finally seeing this in person. I've seen it on tv so many times! The Yeti was great! The ride was great! This is a do not miss ride. I don't even think it made me sick. It was disorienting when you go backwards in the dark but not bad. DD isn't getting away with chickening out next time. I know this will be one of her favorites if she will just try it. Later, I asked her what she was so scared of and she mentioned not knowing what it would do and the Yeti. I had a feeling the Yeti was involved in this one. :rotfl:

IMG_0871.jpg

So on our way to Dinosaur, we met up with some old friends:

IMG_0845.jpg

IMG_0847.jpg

We had been discussing whether or not we would take the kids on Dinosaur. My little chickens who hide and cover their eyes in the Haunted Mansion would have probably stayed with MIL had she been there, BUT she wasn't so we told the kids what to expect and also that they could cover their eyes the whole time if they needed to. I did see other little ones in line so I felt a little less guilty about bringing mine, but honestly, I didn't know how they would react. I had never been on it myself so I was going off of tv and other people's opinions. They were really troopers. No crying, just a little hiding. I think I closed my eyes for some of the ride just to not have to see anything that might scare me. I did catch a glimpse of what was to come right before the end when the big TRex comes right at you from ahead. With a flash of light I saw it so I warned my DS and we both hid. I guess you can figure out what our picture looked like. ;) We didn't buy this one either.

IMG_0851.jpg

So our brave little family left Dinosaur to ride Triceratops Spin which I used to bribe them with to go on Dinosaur.

IMG_0854.jpg

Then we went on It's Tough to be a Bug. We had skipped this one last trip also because DS doesn't like loud noises or big grasshoppers jumping out at him. Since our last trip, we have gone to the New Orleans Audubon Insectarium which has a VERY SIMILAR show. I knew that this would help their nerves. The show was cute and everyone had a great time.

At this point we figured we should check on MIL. It was almost lunch and I know she wouldn't venture out and find the food court. She was actually just getting in the gate so we went find her. I was proud. She made it. I used this little accomplishment to praise her so that she would be a little more independent. It didn't work, but I tried.

Now that she was with us, I wanted to show her things she would like. We missed the next Lion King show so we visited Minnie and Chip & Dale at Camp Minnie Mickey.

IMG_0863.jpg

We then ate at Flame Tree BBQ with a beautiful view of my new favorite roller coaster.

IMG_0866.jpg

After we ate, we watched the Nemo musical. Since we didn't get there early, our seats weren't great. We managed and the show is cute. I think she liked it except she didn't like the no backs on the benches.

continued on next post

We had a little time before the parade and I wanted a good seat. We also wanted to strategically place ourselves where we could easily leave afterwards to make it to the last Festival of the Lion King show. We got great spots right in front of Pizzafari (I think). They served pizza so I believe that's where we were. This was our first AK parade as well so we were happy to sit there for a little while.
A few cute things we noticed:
since the walkways are narrow, you are really close to the action.
Donald's boat sprayed "snow"
Minnie's tub of hot cocoa smelled like chocolate!

We made our way to FOTLK and we were early so we got GREAT SEATS! Yay! We sat in the second row of a section because the 1st row was reserved - for who I don't know but we ended up having a few people sit in those seats. The show was as fantastic as we remembered. To make it more special, the kids got asked to participate in the parade (only DD was brave enough to go) and my DH got to demonstrate the noise a warthog makes! :lmao: I knew he was in trouble when one of the performers had just flirted with him. When she walked away, he thought he was off the hook. She came back for him. I only have one really bad pic because I was too busy videoing the rest. :thumbsup2 Even funnier, there were people we knew from home that were in the audience including a couple of kids he teaches! Priceless! So it was a fun time. It's very hard to take good pics of this show but here are our best:

After the show, we made our way out. We weren't sure how to get to Fort Wilderness so we wanted to be early. We eventually made it with DS falling asleep. I held him so he could rest....and I was enjoying it. After we parked at Fort Wilderness, we rode the bus to Pioneer Hall and checked in. I was able to get MIL into this one so she was with us. DS woke up well rested while we were waiting for our seating. I had been to this show twice before. Once with my parents and siblings as a teenager, and once with DH on our honeymoon. It is such a fun show that I wanted our kids to experience it. 20+ years after the first time I saw it, the same jokes are still funny. We had a great time and great food. Cornbread and Strawberry shortcake - yummy! Much more food than we could eat. On the DDP, you can only be seated in Tier 2 or 3. We got 3 which is the balcony, but surprisingly they make sure you are not left out. I really didn't feel like the rift-raft. They even came up to wish us Happy Anniversary! We had to dance. Joy. DD got a big surprise as well. There is a part of the show where the left and right side of the audience competes with making noise. At the end of our turn, there was this really low pitch, loud, long noise. All the performers start looking around for who or what made the noise when the lighting guy points a spotlight at my very shy, little girl. She didn't realize until everyone started looking at her laughing. She looked at me and I'm cracking up. I tried to explain what was going on but her cluelessness only made it funnier. She wanted to know why they thought it was her then why was it funny that it was her. Too cute! She was so embarrased. Overall, it was a nice end to a good day.

IMG_0987.jpg

We made our way back to our van via the Fort Wilderness bus watching all the campsites adorned with Christmas Decor, drove back to Pop and got ready for bed with a full tummy. Sunday would be our Epcot day and DS's big day as he was excited to finally be able to ride the "fast cars" aka Test Track. TT and Soarin' are also DD's favorite rides. We were so excited for them and I really wanted MIL to ride Soarin'. I wasn't sure how she'd like it but like DH, I thought she should broaden her horizons! ;)

I love the t-shirts you all have on for AK day!

Do glad you got to ride EE and liked it!

The parade looks like a lot of fun!

HDDR sounds fun, too! I want to do that on our next trip!

YAY!! Great updates!! :thumbsup2 So glad you got to ride EE--I want to ride it in May--it was shutdown due to rain last May! LOVE that the characters at Camp Minnie Mickey are dressed in Christmas clothes--sooo cute!! And I loved both the Nemo and FOTLK shows--how fun that your DH got picked to participate!! :goodvibes Ally (who was 4 at the time) rode Dinosaur with my DH last May and she LOVED it! I couldn't believe it!! I worried about her the entire time! HDDR looks like a lot of fun--I've never done that meal before!
