A suggestion for DVC management

OK, I know that when we use our points outside of the DVC family of resorts we have to live with different rules (keep $95 in your thoughts). When we made reservations for our daughter and son for their respective honeymoons we understood that the cost would be $95 to secure their stays through RCI. Then when we were asked to make changes to the places they stayed (each child and their spouse) we paid another $95 (X2)

Then we used our points for a family cruise abaord the Disney Wonder ($95). Now our son and his wife announce that we will be grandparents and the due date is the day of boarding, so we had to cancel ($95) the cruise for the four of us and then we were told that the points could not be used with DVC resorts, only the Disney Collection. So we reserved two rooms at the Polynesian Resort ($95) at higher points than we would have used. OK, so we are paying $190 for $5500 worth of rooms during Easter week, still not too bad

Now I am not complaining, though it seems like it, because I know the rules are spelled out, even though I was unaware of the costs. But if management does make changes in the future, could you make it easier and less expensive if we keep the points in the Disney family.

Hey there Tacoma,
I was not aware of that, but we are looking forward to Flower and Garden in WDW. Plus to cancel Poly will cost $95 and rebooking in DL is another $95.

Plus we just got back from Disneyland. Can't wait until the new DCA is completed. The new World of Color will be outstanding.

I think you're likely to see more and higher fees going forward, not less. In their defense these are likely the costs of them providing the service. They have costs associated with using RCI and all the other entities mentioned though much of those costs is in personnel. They also have to give up the points traded in terms of securing rooms at DVC resorts to rent out to pay for the cruise, non DVC resorts, etc. This is a very inefficient system resulting in dramatic costs compared to what those points would secure at DVC resorts. Having less points or renting out the points and using the cash is a better approach from a cost/value standpoint. Also, diversifying with other timeshares to complement DVC can be a great approach.

Firstly, congratulations on the new arrival ScubaD!

I am sorry that you have all of these fees associated with your cancellation of DCL. My only wish is that when people come on these boards asking whether they should use points for their DCL cruise, maybe you could share how using your DVC points adversely affected your cancellation ability in a financial way.
