Anybody up for a little stroll down memory lane with TCD?

My oldest DD is a High School senior this year. We were recently looking through some old photos to use for a yearbook ad, and we came across these photos from her first trip to the Fort!

These are also historic, because they are from good old TCD's first visit to the Fort.

It's true. Sadly, I never visited the Fort as a child, and really didn't know much about it until some friends visited and stayed in a Wilderness Home. They had such a good time, that Mrs. TCD suggested that I take the oldest DD for a father/daughter trip.

I think Mrs. TCD was pregnant with our twin DD's at the time, so this would place the date of this visit in the Spring of 1995. These photos, of course, were taken with a film camera, so I had to scan these to post them. (you are welcome).;)

Where does the time go?

OK, enough rambling, on with the photos:

This totem pole used to stand outside of the Settlement Trading Post. There is a small covered wagon in this spot now. If you look closely, you can see Trails End/Crockett's Tavern in the background:

This photo was taken at the beach. It is funny that I found this photo, as I swore just a year or so ago that the hammocks at the beach were a new addition, but here one is:

My DD has always loved animals, and the petting farm was a huge hit with her on this visit, as you can see:

Back then, we didn't worry about e-coli, and germs, and such:

This is one of a pair of sheep that were there at the petting farm for years:

Over the next few years, as our family grew, we visited the Fort a lot, and the petting farm was a must do on every visit. It is a shame that it had to go, but that is just the way things go sometimes. :(

In these photos, you can see one of the Wilderness Homes, which over the ensuing years were all replaced with the current Wilderness Cabins. We stayed on the 2700 loop on this visit, and the home we stayed in was rather new. This loop was one of the last to get the cabins when the replacements began. These photos also show the old style golf carts, and the TCD family's 1995 Ford Windstar, which was our first minivan, before we eventually moved up to our current gas guzzling, tree killing, SUV's:

If you think about it, a lot has changed at the Fort since these photos were taken, but a lot is still the same.

I know a few of the frequent readers of this board have children about the age that my DD was when these photos were taken. To you I say, treasure every moment. It really does go fast.

I had forgotten all about the totem pole.
Your right about them growing up fast and enjoy them now.
Thanks for taking the time and trouble to share.

I am 22, but when I was in Girl Scouts we worked hard all year and saved up to go camping at the Fort and go to Epcot for the GS convention. :goodvibes

When we got to the Fort, we were in the midst of a severe thunderstorm so they put us in the Wilderness Homes for free!! :thumbsup2

You have no idea how excited us girls were, then the next day we stayed in the tents that the Fort will set up for you.

When I am home next, I will look for those pictures and try to scan them, I remember the totem pole :)

Thanks for the memories TCD. I remember taking our boys when they were young. Ours are a little older than yours, but they loved the petting farm. We still pull out the videos from those trips occasionally and laugh, more so about the clothes and haircuts we had than anything else.

You're trip reports are very realistic TCD, and now this is too much. My DD has been going to the fort since she was 7 and she's now 11 in 2 weeks. It kills me every year she ages that before long she's going to be grown and gone. Hopefully she'll still want to come when she's older.

Hey back then I actually had hair. LOL yes they do grow up fast. Seems my youngest dd was just 12 the other day, now she is junior in college. Wow time flies. My ds is now junior in hs and is driving. I will tell everyone to cherish them while they are little because they change alot when they go through the teen years. There will be times you won't even know them. But remember this always love them more than you love your life. Wow don't mean to preach.

We always have gone to the fort for the last 16 yrs and have seen many changes some good and some not so good. I remember the totem poll and the petting zoo. My kids always loved river country.

Wow TCD, those are great photos from the past. I'll have to go get some myself. When our oldest went through his second surgery this past spring, I got one of those digital picture frames and put in a whole bunch of photos of him from before he got sick - so the folks who worked with him could see him without the scars and bandages.

I also agree, enjoy them while they're young because those days are over so quick. Trust me, you'll never hear a 16 year old say "Just one more bed time story!"

We started taking our son down when he was 4 he is know 21.... He'll still go for a day or 2 after he stops in Gainesville to meet up with his buddies and then he'll grace us for a couple of days. He still love FTW and Disney!

Thanks for sharing, TCD. When FtW rented golf carts without windshields in the winter, they could never keep saran wrap in stock at Meadow or Settlement!!:rotfl: I'd forgotten about that and the totem pole!! You must have a wonderful family - cause you're such a great guy here on the board!!:thumbsup2

I don't think you are going to have a problem with your DD wanting to come to the Fort. All of mine still want to go. It has been fun watching them grow up at the Fort, but I am not looking forward to my oldest leaving the nest.

Mine loved River Country, too! And Discovery Island! Fortunately, we were able to enjoy River Country while the DD's were little. The kid's area there was perfect for them, and it was great having it right there at the Fort. We also loved taking the boat over to Discovery Island. It was just the right size for young children.

Deb- I remember when none of the carts had windshields, and then, for a while you could choose to rent with or without (a small extra charge for the windshield). Now, they all have windshields. At least they fold down. I like the breeze in my face!

Yes, I do have a wonderful family. Hopefully, we can meet up at the Fort next month?

I'm hoping she'll be like Lucy Love and still want to hang with the folks when she's older. My dream would be for her and her family to be sitting in the site next to me in the 900 loop lol. One can only hope huh?
