The Blue Zoo that is.. and they have Tiger Beer!! Yes--Tiger!! Hard to find everywhere--in fact, hard to find anywhere!! A real treat.
OK ,that's out of my system--now the review.
I am beginning to think Blue Zoo is now my 3'rd favorite WDW restaurant. This was our 3rd meal there and it was as good as (or better) than the last. It's located at the Dolphin Hotel and you can get there several ways. We drove and valet parked--they will stamp the voucher at the restaurant and the valet parking is free (except tip, of course). The Dolphin was pretty busy when we arrived before 6:00 PM (another convention going on ) but in spite of the crowd, Mrs U managed to find her way into one of the hotel stores and brought herself a new dress--before dinner!!
Oh well.
We showed up at the restaurant sharply at 6 and were immediately led to the table--walking thru the bar/lounge area, past the kitchen, and past the "dancing" fish. The Blue Zoo IS rather blue looking--upscale nautical is how I'd describe it. Our server for the evening was Lorenzo and he was excellent!! Young and enthusiastic, he knew the menu well and had several suggestions which we took. Mrs U ordered her usual glass of wine, while I had to ask what beers they had (there's no printed list). Lorenzo went thru the usual suspects, got down to Newcastle, then added --oh-and Tiger. That did it. I could have had cold pizza and been happy the rest of the evening--
But the Blue Zoo has much better food than cold pizza!! After downing almost the entire basket of delicious breads and fennel butter that they serve, we ordered our appetizers, Mrs U had the vietnamese crab salad, while I ordered the Teppan seared sea Scallops with braised beef short rib. I'd read about both when Mister Disney did his recent excellent review of Blue Zoo, and based on his recommendations, that's what we ordered. Both were very, very good, but I have to agree with him that the Scallops were the best of the two. Dinner was a tough choice--. Last trip Mrs U had gotten that roasted double pork chop and I'd almost made up my mind in advance to get that. But then I thought-this is a seafood spot, so I'll order seafood. Which I did. From the daily selection of fresh fish (they had 3 that night) I ordered the grouper, with warm crabmeat and a dijon mustard sauce. Mrs U got the house specialty--miso glazed chilean sea bass, with warm sesame spinach. Both were great--and that spinach tasted like nothing we'd tasted before. Wonderful!! Ought to be the standard vegetable everywhere.
Dessert followed--Mrs U had the warm molten chocolate banana cake (which came with chocolate pudding and banana ice cream) while I had the Strawberry Trio (which had strawberry sorbet, fresh strawberries, some chocolate cake and a strawberry flambee').
So a fine meal came and went. Friendly greeters at the podium, an excellent server, a manager who came to the table to inquire how the meal was going, excellent food--and Tiger beer. Dosen't get any better than that.

Thanks for another great review! I liked how Mrs. U shopped before dinner - a good dinner and shopping are a great combo! I said this in your review of Citricos, but we're thinking about eating there when we go to WDW next week based on your and Mr. Disney's good reviews. Plus, I love seafood. And we've never eaten here before.

You said there were 3 fresh fish that night. Besides the grouper, what were the other 2? Also, is the restaurant quiet or noisy? Is the restaurant big? Is there a good area to request to sit? It would be just DH and myself. Thanks for any info. :)

One was snapper--but I can't recall the other. They're not printed on the menu, as they change often.
It can be noisy if there are a lot of conventioneers there--it was like that our first trip. But the last two meals were pretty quiet. And there have been relatively few kids each of the 3 times we went.
There's no particular "view" anywhere, so anywhere in the restaurant should be good seating. And it seems fairly big--about Citrico sized, I'd say.
I think you'll like it if you go--

Thanks for another great review. DW and I would have just about duplicated your menu choices. All of our ADR's are made for our upcoming June trip, but we will be including Blue Zoo next year.

Thanks for the review. I always look forward to your opinions.

Kathy

Thanks for posting this - my hubby and I are planning on trying Blue Zoo in October and it is always comforting to read such positive comments about a restaurant we're going to try for the first time.

I think that vietnamese crab salad sounds divine...did you both enjoy it or would you suggest something different? I'm not crazy about scallops, that's why I ask.

Thanks again!! :goodvibes

Thanks for the great review. BlueZoo and Jiko have become our two favorite restaurants. :)

WHAT?!?!? No blueberry martinis? :faint:

Glad you liked the scallops. Did you think the shortribs served with them though was the "star" on the plate for the appetizers?

Hi Uncle,
Great review. You said that this was your third favorite restaurant, what are your first two??? :)

I've never been brave enough to try the Blue Zoo (for the simple reason that I don't eat seafood).

But after reading all your glowing reviews of it, I'm beginning to feel really selfish for denying my DH of a wonderful dining experience.

I may just have to "suck it up" and make an ADR there during our December trip!

Thanks for the great review!

Mickeycrazed: They have a fine tasting double pork chop!! And also a filet on the menu. And a pan roasted chicken breast.

Mister Disney: The ribs were as good as the scallops. They could have easily been a stand alone appetizer.

oybolshoi: As always, I wind up tasting almost everything Mrs U orders!! Mister Disney has a great picture of that crab salad in his review. It tasted slighty spicy (it has melon, mango, herbs, coconut and "green" curry as part of the dish) and served street vendor style--in a cupcake like portion right on the plate. PLus--they have other appetizers on the menu, including a couple of flatbreads.

MY top 3--V&A, JIko, Blue Zoo.

Having dined there several times, I am beginning to think that the bread basket really sets the stage for the meal, and gets the whole thing started off on the right foot.

Great review! I had the same meal as Mrs. U last summer (other than dessert). Loved it. Unfortunately, we will not be dining at bluezoo on our upcoming trip, but will be going to Jiko. Thanks again!

Yum yum! I love grouper. Of course, it's never available up here! I think we are going to try bluezoo on our next trip based on all the good reviews. Frankly, we've avoided it in the past because we've been to the three Todd English restaurants up here (Olives, Figs, and Kingfish Hall), and thought BlueZoo might be too similar (they are all good, btw). All the kudos have changed my mind!
