A NEW Summer Excercise & Weight Loss Group?

Welcome Deb and Flipflop! Deb - If you were keeping up in those parks, you can't be in too bad shape. Keep walking like that at home and those 30 lbs will be gone in no time!

Flipflop - You've done great so far! I wish I were that far along. I don't know how you fit it all in with work and 2 year old triplets! I have one 2 year old and he keeps me hopping! :yay: Luckily, DD5 is a much more calm child.

Snowy76 - great job on the walk/jogging. It's a lot harder on the knees now that we're older/heavier isn't it. I've had to adjust for that too. Great job on the grocery store willpower!!! That's what I have to do too. Certain things just can't make it into the cart. My major downfall is CheezIts - I might as well apply them directly to my thighs as that is where they'll end up. I can easily eat the whole box in one day. That's partly why I have DH going to the trainer with me. Since he's in on the program too, he's not sabotaging me by bringing home junk.

Hope everyone has a great weekend! :cheer2:

Thanks for the welcome! You'll be that far along in no time! I have been doing Jenny Craig - which works out well b/c much of the food is prepared for me so I don't have to take the time to prep food the way I did with WW (though I love WW and think it's a great program - I lost 60 on that 9 years ago and kept it off until I had the trio). I work out at 5:45 am on the days it is my turn:scared1: I hate it but it's necessary. If work is super busy, then sometimes the work outs go b/c I can't get up that early if I have been up until midnight - but other than that I make myself get up and go.

Welcome everyone!!! What a bunch of "losers" !!! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I am still on track. I have lost almost 8 pounds now in 4 weeks. Been keeping up my one hour on the elliptical 3-4 times per week. Trying to get that up to 5 times per week but it's been tough.

Good luck everyone with your weight loss! Keep up the great work and let us know how you are doing! :thumbsup2

Yeah, it's been a reality check to try to jog. That whole "I'm skinnier in my head" mentality is hard to kick!

Timon, sounds like you're doing great with the elliptical! I LOVE that machine - when I get to the gym it's what I always do first. Great on the joints too!

DH's union has their annual clambake this afternoon. :scared1: Wish me luck! :rotfl:

Yes! It's awesome on the joints! I have Lupus and a lot of joint pain usually. I don't think I could do a whole hour on a treadmill or bike, it would hurt too much :headache:

What a cute little angel in your signature!!!

Wow, our group is growing in numbers and losing in pounds! Welcome to all newcomers.

Never got a chance yet to tell a little about myself. I will be 61 in a few days. I have 2 DD, one will be 39 in August. She has two dd, one is 8 and one is almost 7. She also has a ds that is 11. My other dd is 36 and has one dd that is 7. This is the daughter that is a Disney Queen. Alexis Jo, her dd that is 7, has been to Disney 7 times and trip #8 is coming up in October. She is the Disney Princess. My other DD children have never been to WDW yet. But this October me, my two DD and my 4 grandkids are going to WDW and the cruise!

Does anyone want to share a favorite "healthy recipe" or favorite exercise.
I find that sometimes you tend to get in a rut eating the same things and the same exercises. Need to "shake" things up a bit.

Good question. Hope someone answers for you. I'm a creature of habit. I like what I like in terms of food and I'm comfortable w/ walking so I'm not much help to you ... unless you want to come to northern Illinois & clean horse stalls. That can be good exercise.

Hello Everyone!
Sorry I have been gone for a few days, I went back to work this week and have been extremly busy with that and getting my daughter packed and ready for dance camp.

I weighed in on Monday and was down another 1.5 pounds, which considering I am still limited to just walking for exercise, for one more week I am more than happy with!

Amy, so sorry to hear about your dad, and I know all about birthday cake...hoping your week is going well.

Jill, welcome and wow! Triplets. My two youngest children are 18 months apart at 3 1/2 and just barely turned 5, everyone thinks they are twins. They are certainly full of energy, I empathize with how busy you must be with triplets, I can't even imagine! With my two youngest I find that exercise after they go to bed works out better for me, that way I get in 5-6 days/week (my gym is open 24 hours), I am doing Jenny Craig:yay: also, I really like it, it is the first thing that has really worked for me (I have lost 20 or so lbs on WW in the past, but never more).

Snowy 76- How did the clambake go? Being from Idaho we don't have them around here and I have never been to one...Hoping it went wll.

Mimmy Mouse, I will have to think on the favorite recipe, on thing I like to do when I am craving something warm and sweet is to sprinkle a cut up apple with splenda and cinnamon, cover it with plastic wrap and microwave until it gets soft....Yum, almost like apple pie...if I am baking dinner in the oven, I wrap the apple in aluminum foil and just cook it with dinner.:goodvibes

Have a great day!

Keyana - Congrats on the weight loss!!!

Mimmy Mouse - My fave "diet recipe" is butter substitute. Really, we eat this whether we're on a diet or not. If you're going to have the oven on anyway, spray foil with Pam, wrap a whole head of garlic in it and toss in the oven. About 30 minutes on 350 and it's done. Just let it cool a bit, unwrap, hold it by the larger end (bulb end) and squeeze onto a small plate. You'll have a really yummy fat-free spread that's FULL of flavor. You can also add a little pepper and olive oil to make more of a dip, but that kills the fat-free thing. :rolleyes1 It's still good for corn on the cob and stuff like that though, and olive oil is healthier than butter.

Mostly our diet plan is grilling meat and adding a salad and some other veggie or fruit (green beans/tomatoes/cantaloup, etc.) as well as a portion of bread with above spread. The best thing for me to do is cook just enough for that meal with no seconds. Schwan's make a whole grain bread product that comes as 6 half-loaf portions so if you only bake one portion and slice it you can't really overdo the bread. It's super yummy too!

I've been taking it a little easier this week on the exercise. I strained a hamstring, but it's much better now. I kept up with the trainer and we just modified the exercise plan, but I skipped the cardio yesterday and today to give it time to rest. I had to ice it last night, but I think I'll be back in the game by tomorrow!

One more week with the trainer and then I have 2 weeks to work by myself. DD is having eye surgery so she'll have to stay home for 2 weeks. DH and I will take turns going to work out. The first 2 weeks is a killer when you're out of shape, so hopefully I'll be motivated to keep going so that when we get back to training I'm not so sore again!

I am in.

I have lost 8 pounds in the last few months. Not nearly fast enough.

I have another 40 or so pounds to lose, but my first goal is to get down another 18 pounds.

I start a new job in late August and would love to lose at least 10 more by then.

Congrats on the loss! I don't think this week will be my best weigh in ever - Father's Day weekend presented some issues and I ate quite a bit that was not Jenny friendly. If you stick with the JC plan, I am finding that it really works quite well. My losses have slowed to about 1/2 pound a week now but it's still coming off. I am actually going to talk to DH about exercising at night. I think we should each take a night or two and then we can get exercise in at least 4 times a week. I find that I am REALLY hungry at the time I would be getting home from work but I think maybe I will eat my JC dinner at work before I go and then head straight to the gym. Thanks for the suggestion.

Mimmy Mouse: Chicken tacos are my favorite low-fat dinner. I chop up the chicken into small peices and saute in a pan sprayed with pam - add a taco seasoning packet and water and let it cook for a couple of minutes. I weigh out the chicken and use FF sour cream, low-fat pre-shredded mexican cheese, lettuce and picante sauce --- all in 2 small low-fat tortillas. I love it b/c the chicken can be cooked over the weekend and then it's ready to go for a fast dinner during the week. I usually have a pour-out-of-the-bag salad on the side with some added veggies in it to round out the meal.

Our favorite "takes more prep time" dinner is a turkey/chicken dumpling out of a WW cook book. Ground turkey or ground chicken, chopped peanuts, ginger, cilantro and egg get mixed together and put inside wanton wrappers and sealed. The wontons then get steamed - you serve it with soy sauce. They are one point each. DELICIOUS!

For exercise, I have been taking a cardio circuit class where the instructor mixes cardio and a variety of stations. Each station has a repetitive exercise that works a different part of your body/core. The stations change each week. My two favorites make use of Gliders. With the first you lay down on your stomach and put the gliders under your palms with your elbows bent and hands next to your shoulders. You push up and then extend your elbows and hands out to the side and then drop down. It is a modified push up and it really works your chest/abs/shoulders. For the other you also lie on your stomach with the gliders under your hands but this time you hands/arms are stretched out in front of you and you slowly raise your self up by moving your arms back (but you keep them straight) -- this works your back muscles.

Dawn

Dawn,

I go to a gym that is owned by Meridian (they own hospitals). It is not like a Gold's with TV's on every machine, basketball courts or anything like that. Pretty basic - treadmills (which have tv's hung above them that are set to specific channels), ellipticals, bikes, universal machines, free weights, two rooms for classes one for spinning spinning and one for other classes (like yoga, pilates, cardio circuit, step). They offer some specialized classes for older people with arthritis, osteoporosis (Sp?), etc and have a small therapy pool. The club has out patient physical therapy on the second floor and gets quite a few older people post heart attacks, strokes, etc. The woman who teaches the cardio circuit class is fantastic and keeps up on all the new training techniques. I hurt for a good two days after that class. She also teaches yoga fit, which is yoga that burns more calories - also a great class.

I really like my gym a lot! Do you belong to a gym?

Jill

I used to. I have thought about joining our YMCA, but it is $90/mo. for membership.

The problem is that I need childcare for my kids and it isn't easy to find. When they are in school I am working.

I *could* get up at 5am, workout from 5:30am-6:30am and try to get to work by 7:45am, and have DH take them to school, but it is really hard to stick to that early schedule and most classes don't start until 6:30am-7am.

$90 seems to be the going rate (at least here in central NJ). Ours is only $60 but that is b/c it is not a state of the art facility and offers no recreation type facilities.

We have the same issue with the kids. DH and I take turns going to the gym before we have to get the kids up and out of the house. There are two classes a week at my gym that start at 5:45 am - and if I don't go those days I use an elliptical or run on the treadmill and then do free weights/abs. On the days i go to the gym, I have to be home by 7:00 am to help my hubby get the kids out and then I shower, get ready for work and leave by 8 am. Don't think I'd be able to do it if I had to be at work at 8 am (I commute an hour). I am going to try to add in some evenings and possibly a saturday or sunday morning. I really need 4 days a week to lose the pounds so I need to find a way to get more exercise!

Well, another issue is that the Y is the opposite direction from work! 9 miles the opposite direction in fact! So, an added 18 extra miles!

Now, there IS a Curves on my way to work and they open at 6:30am. Not sure if that is enough of a workout, but I could work out there from 6:30-7:15and then go strait to work OR I could pick up the kids late. They will be in after school care, but I really hate to do that, their day is so long already. Elem. school gets out at 2:15pm but I work in a High School and get out at 3:30pm and then commute 20-30 min. so I don't get there until 4pm.

Anyway, thanks for the info. I HAVE a treadmill, a bowflex (Dh's) and tapes, so I SHOULD do this at home!!!! But sometimes I need a membership to keep me motivated!!!!!

Dawn,

I don't know if one of these would be near you? From the price info they've sent out here, I think they might be less expensive than your Y, although it probably varies by region.

http://www.lff.com/MembershipPrograms.aspx

We just had one open up here and it is beautiful with a top notch kids area. The price was about the same as the place we go to now, although we won't be moving since our current gym is SO much closer to our house and our kids love it there.

Welcome DawnM

Mom2Alix....
What an interesting recipe for butter substitute. Thanks for sharing.

Am trying to get back in the swing of things. We were off to a horse show this past weekend. Why does it take me several days to recover? Oh, and you'd think these things would be soooo much more scale friendly than they turn out to be. Must be something about drinking too much powerade and eating supper most nights after 10 p.m.

Looking to get back into walking again but time has just been at a premium for me. Hoping to start again soon, but maybe not tomorrow. It's ad deadline time for the magazine and I am scheduled to take our DDs Miniature Horses to Vacation Bible School tomorrow since it's a "ranch" theme this year.

I seriously have to learn to say NO!

Amy

You are not alone. I have not lost any 'new' weight (as opposed to taking off what I gained back while on vacation) since i returned from vacation the FIRST WEEK OF MAY! :scared1: I have a very hard time readjusting to eating healthy/diet friendly after being off the wagon for a few days. We were in WDW in May on the DDP and it has taken me 5 weeks to get back on track. We go on vacation again next week - but this time to a beach house so there will be a lot of grilled fish/veggies,etc as opposed to french toast loaf and mickey bars so I think this will be better. If you have any good techniques, please share!

Hello everybody. I had a lot going on last week with Father's Day and my birthday, so I gained back the one pound I had just lost. But I'm trying hard to lose it back again. I joined a class at the gym. Rebounding Something new for me as I am a klutz when it comes to aerobic type exercise. I have been twice now. I haven't been able to walk at lunchtime any more. Work is getting more stressful. Yesterday I was here over 10 hours. I just don't want to give up! I'm going to keep on trying.

Some good recipes! One that me and dh like are l/f graham crackers with cool whip in the middle (like an ice cream sandwich) then wrap in foil or saran wrap and freeze. I have tried this with chocolate graham crackers too.
