Just a pet peeve, so I am sharing my way to remember.

:teacher:

My 5th grade English teacher wrote the word "A" on the far left of the chalk board, then walked to the very end of the room and wrote the word "lot" on the far right of the chalk board.

A...................................................................................................................................lot

Thanks!

Why yes it is. I will never forget it either because I got it marked wrong on a speech paper explaining how to play volleyball.

We even had peer editing done and the girl circled that it was wong on my paper. However, I, in my superior thinking knew I said it as "alot" when speaking with no pause, therefore, I WAS correct and didn't change it.

I was not happy with myself when the paper came back and points deducted for not changing it like I should have. It has stuck with me ever since and that happened back in Junior High.

I was reading a book this summer by a very, very popular author and was absolutely stunned to see how many words were not spelled correctly! Can't believe it was her doing - either a lousy typist or a lousy proof reader..

On a message board those things don't bother me - but in a published book? No excuse for that at all..

This is a public message board, whenever you are responding to a post, must you really think about every single word being correct, these threads are getting to be so silly. ...thanks alot! :)

This was a spelling word (actually words) for my now 17 year old daughter when she was in FIRST grade. After talking with her a bit at the time, I told her that since she knows it's 2 words, she could (at the time) spell better than her father. :lmao:

Every time I see it as alot, I notice the misspelling. I don't get excited about it or feel the need to point it out, but I do notice.

If people would use "you're" every time rather than of "your", they'd be correct more often than not. If they'd use "than" rather than "then", they too would be correct more often than not.

This post is all in good fun.

You're welcome, a lot.;)

And cannot is one word!

Just had to put that one out there! ;)

What about ALLOT?

al⋅lot  /əˈlɒt/ [uh-lot]

–verb (used with object), -lot⋅ted, -lot⋅ting.
1. to divide or distribute by share or portion; distribute or parcel out; apportion: to allot the available farmland among the settlers.
2. to appropriate for a special purpose: to allot money for a park.
3. to assign as a portion; set apart; dedicate.

But if it's meant to take the place of 'a lot' then we're talking wacky tabacky.

Alot doesn't bother me, maybe since I didn't know it's a lot until I was about 10. But seeing definately, difanetly, defenately, etc... annoys me.

It's definitely, in relation to the word finite, infinite and infinity.

My history professor would return papers with 'alot' or 'a lot' in them.

His reasoning: "A lot is a place to park a car or start a pick up game of baseball."

Here we go A...............................GAIN

:lmao:

How about apostrophe abuse? People making ADR's. Or staying in the 70's section?

Essentially, there's always going to be grammatical and spelling errors regardless of it being a forum or the NYT. I've gradually learned to get over it especially since I'm not perfect.

But I do love that explaination given on the chalkboard... putting a and lot on opposite ends. Obviously it worked since someone took it in :)

That one always bugs me.

I also really dislike that all right has become 'alright' thanks to people who couldn't spell it right. It is technically okay only in informal writings, but people let it creep in all the time to even published pieces.

It isn't alright, it is ALL RIGHT, otherwise it is ALL WRONG! That one was drilled into me by my gradeschool teachers. I cringe when I read it alright.

There I said it ;)

My 5th grade teacher told me a lot was a place to park a car and that I should use the word many, a multitude, great number or large number, plethora, significant quantity, etc.
