YES insure that horse!! For a small yearly premium (around $250) you can get major medical/surgical and mortality. Almost every horse in my barn is insured by the owner. Colic surgery costs the same for the 6 figure horses as it does for the backyard pleasure horses. Try checking into:

Tractor Supply is great for the basics...halters, leadropes, grooming tools, helmets, shampoo, first aid stuff. So is Dover Saddlery, stateline tack, Valley Vet suppply and horse.com. DH and I spend a lot of time and money at Tractor Supply.
Contact the vets office you will be using and set up an account with them. Some vets require a credit card left on file for charges and others will bill. Find out what your vet requires. It's coming up on time for spring shots. Find out what vaccinations are required for your area (is your horse's Coggins current? If not, you will need a new one pulled.)
It is cheaper to deworm the horse on your own, so maybe you could have the barn manager show you how to do it. It's pretty easy. I wouldn't trust a $15 hoof trim. But it would be a good idea to ask around of the other boarders or from the vet's office for recommendations for farriers.
Craigslist is actually a good place to find some used tack.
