A horse for DD! .......UPDATE! pg 5

YES insure that horse!! For a small yearly premium (around $250) you can get major medical/surgical and mortality. Almost every horse in my barn is insured by the owner. Colic surgery costs the same for the 6 figure horses as it does for the backyard pleasure horses. Try checking into:

Tractor Supply is great for the basics...halters, leadropes, grooming tools, helmets, shampoo, first aid stuff. So is Dover Saddlery, stateline tack, Valley Vet suppply and horse.com. DH and I spend a lot of time and money at Tractor Supply.

Contact the vets office you will be using and set up an account with them. Some vets require a credit card left on file for charges and others will bill. Find out what your vet requires. It's coming up on time for spring shots. Find out what vaccinations are required for your area (is your horse's Coggins current? If not, you will need a new one pulled.)

It is cheaper to deworm the horse on your own, so maybe you could have the barn manager show you how to do it. It's pretty easy. I wouldn't trust a $15 hoof trim. But it would be a good idea to ask around of the other boarders or from the vet's office for recommendations for farriers.

Craigslist is actually a good place to find some used tack.

I have an update. Before I would let DD ride I had my trainer evaluate the horse. She had a few issues to work out, buddy sour, insecure alone, not always listening/paying attention to rider, pissy attitude. Nothing huge, but things that might be dangerous for dd and definitely things that we couldn't handle completely on our own. So in she went to training. We've handled her and worked with her on the ground while she was in training, but finally....yesterday, DD got to ride her. It was brilliant. They had already bonded on the ground, and it showed. They meshed perfectly. DD worked her in W/T/C and everything went beautifully. She couldn't have asked for a better first ride. She's officially in love with her first horse.:lovestruc

BTW, there is no such thing as a free horse.:lmao:

I love happy endings :cloud9: . Thanks for sharing.

agnes!

Sweet! So glad things worked out for you guys. As for the "free" thing...I couldn't agree more!

It's never ending. Each time I go out there's something more I need. Good thing she's sweet!

Another great source for tack is Schneider's Saddlery in Chagrin Falls, OH. Their website is www.sstack.com. We buy a lot there and they heavily support our local Riding and Driving Club and Quarter Horse Associations.

You can also get on the pleasure horse forum and find all kinds of used tack and show clothes. My sister sells a lot of clothing through the forum. She's as addicted to that site as much as I'm addicted to the DIS boards. The website is www.pleasurehorse.com and click on "Meet at the Forum". Good luck and have fun!
