A horse for DD! .......UPDATE! pg 5

Speaking as a family that needed to find a good home for our horse, I can tell you that you are doing them a huge favor! When you sell a horse, you are done and have no control on what happens to the animal-and it can be bad.
So now they have the peace of mind knowing their horse will be cared for and loved. Horse lovers know that it is never about money!

Promise them the horse will always have a good home or that, if/when the time comes, you'll make sure the horse goes to a good home. At sales, horses can be purchased and trucked to Canada or Mexico. Things don't go so well for them there.

I absolutely agree with both of these. We still own every horse we've ever bought and will until they die of old age (two are buried in our back pasture). I can't bear to think of what "could" happen to them when they change hands. While I agree that they've been generous to your daughter, you're also helping them too! :thumbsup2

She's home!

The only downside is that Dh couldn't be there. I feel so bad for him. He called Thursday night (he's in Afghanistan) and tried to sound happy, but I could tell it was crushing him that he couldn't be there to see DD with her first horse.
Please congratulate your daughter for me and thank your husband for the sacrifice that he's making for all of us! :flower3:

Thank you. I can't wait to see her under English saddle. I think they will match up beautifully.

I hope so too.:goodvibes I've always wondered why girls are so drawn to horses. I was, am still.

We always used to joke with the boys who horseshowed about how smart they are. The majority of riders are females. If a boy wants to meet a girl, there is NO better place than in horseshowing (although they stay pretty busy during the shows :)).

She's home! Here are a few pictures. She isn't a happy camper right now. She had to leave her buddies and had to spend the night in the round pen, because we didn't want to let her out with her new herd in the dark. So today we are going to go out and rescue her for a while and take her for a walk of the farm.
DD was so happy when they brought her that she couldn't talk. All she could do was grin and cry.:cloud9:

Such cuteness! Congrats again! Did DD have to try her out with a western saddle originally? I bet she'll look like a cutie in an English saddle too!

What a pretty horse. Your daughter is very lucky. I used to beg and beg my mom for a horse when I was young. I loved horses so much. It wasn't possible, we don't live on enough land. I still would love to have a horse and board it or just live on a farm.

Thanks for sharing!!!

Congrats!!! :cool1: I have been looking for a pony for my daughter for the last year and I havent found anything even remotely possible for my dd6. All the ones we looked at are either crazy (or half dead) or over $6000 For that price I would rather buy another Fjord!!! ( and we would except I havent found that would work yet!! plus they are a bit too tall). We did find a few 1 year leases but I want something to keep not something we have to give back in a year!!!

OP Congrats on your new horse! Tigger1 how about looking into a horse rescue? We got our wonderful girl Maxine (I wish I could remember how to add pictures it's been awhile) but I had gone to Equine Affair held in Massachusetts annually & found a wonderful man named Frank who runs Equine Angels Rescue Sanctuary. (EARS) He rescues foals and older horses from Canada (Premarin foals) He's in CT. You can check his website at
www.foalrescue.com or google him

What a great story and how wonderful for your daughter. Please pass along my heartfelt thanks to your husband for his service, and I appreciate you and your family for your sacrifices for our country.

Thank you, I will.:goodvibes

I bought my DD her 1st horse when she turned 5 :cloud9: How I wish I could go back to the times when she was young and just spent all her time with me and our horses.
She is married and has a child of her own now and I have already started planning on buying her daughter a horse when she is 5 .

CONGRATS !!

Please let your DH know how much we appriciate him and what he is doing for us

She did try her out in a western saddle. I agree that she will look great in an English saddle though.

She's in training right now, so DD hasn't even been on her yet since we've had her. We went out yesterday, and I've discovered that nothing can make you feel incompetent faster than being a new horse owner at a barn full of experienced owners. I went to get her in the field, and she said "HA! I don't think so!" I tried for a good while until a barn hand ( who must have been watching and laughing her butt off) came out and helped me catch her with a grain bucket. Then I tried to lead her out to take her to the round pen. She said "HA! I don't think so!" and stood there like a tree stump. I was able to handle that fairly well, but in the round pen she got pushy and the barn hand came over and to point out the error of my ways ( there were many, many errors apparently.) It was all rather embarrassing. :lmao: Good thing for trainers.:thumbsup2

Awww...all of us trainers were newbies once. I LOVE novice horse people. It's a blank slate that I can mold a competent, savvy horse person out of. Ask questions...there is no dumb question! Mistakes are only learning opportunities. With horses, you will likely only make the mistake ONCE, because the results of said mistake are usually BIG messes. I tell my students all the time that you learn more from mistakes than from successes.

If you ever have any questions, feel free to PM me.

I sent them an email this weekend and just heard back. He is in Foster care at the moment and they have first right to adopt him, if they decided not to, they will let me know. They say he is fine with a dominate mares but he can be a little studdy sometimes..they are going to work with him for leadline soon..

Sign me up as another of those crazy horse lovin' girls;). And I met my DH when he walked through the horse barn and offered to help me with barn duty. I decided any man who would scoop the poop was a keeper:lovestruc!

Hugs to your girl and her new horse.

Terri

Thank you! You know I will!:lmao: I went to buy some $$tack$$ yesterday. I found a budget bridle(reins, noseband included) that was mildewed and got a bargain on that. It cleaned up pretty with some Bick 4 (love that stuff), and found a nice quality halter and fly mask, and finally got a girth for DD's saddle. We had some grooming tools and the people that gave the horse to us had some Oster tools and they gave the whole lot to us so I have all of that now too. They also gave me a grain bucket, water bucket and her old western headstall. I'm hoping they give me their old western saddle as well ( I don't want much do I?):rolleyes1

What other things do I need right away?

I would make sure you have some spare lead-ropes and a spare halter..( Mine also broke or disappeared!) I would also recommend getting a lunge line..are you also going to need some dewormer ( unless the barn you board at is going to do that?)

For an exrta 15.00 they worm and trim feet every month. DD wants a lead rope to match the halter we found, so I'm headed to tractor supply this afternoon to see what they have.

here are a few of my favorite sites

bottlesandbridles.com

we also buy from statelinetack.com and doversaddlery.com

I also buy a lot from ebay. www.horseloverz.com is good if you buy directly from ebay. If you buy from their site they tend to be alot slower on the shipping...

Congratulations on your beautiful horse! A dream come true for your little girl.

It looks like you have most things covered, but one thing new horse owners may not know about is medical insurance. Horse medical care can get very expensive. For instance, surgery for colic costs thousands of dollars. I would definitely look into Major Illness insurance at the very minimum but there are a lot of options.

Hope your daughter has many fun years with her new friend.
